Thirty 7 North Restaurant & Bar Ratings and Reviews
My husband and I went to Thirty 7 North on a Sunday night to celebrate a birthday. The restaurant was very quiet, without many guests, but our experience was wonderful. The service was impeccable -- attentive, but not hovering. Our dinners were excellent -- fresh ingredients, well prepared and served at the appropriate temperature. Although it was a quiet evening at the restaurant, we felt as welcomed and as special as would be expected on a more popular Friday or Saturday night. We'll definitely return!
Don't let the humble exterior fool you. This is fine dining, elegant and so memorable. I loved my cocktail, "The Heater" with jalapeno-infused vodka and fresh cilantro, but the best thing I ate on our entire trip to VA Beach was their fish stew with coconut-curry broth. The clams may have been the freshest I've ever eaten, and the herbs in the broth gave it the most beautiful spice. I found myself feeling emotional about this meal! Not to be missed.
Dinner took 2.5 hours without drinks or food on the table for much too long in between courses. Ended up being comped a round a drinks because of this but would still not recommend. Another service fail was a non meat eating person noted this to the waitress but one of the specials came out with bacon in the dish. Another comp but by this time it was laughable how long and disorganized they were. This was our second visit and the first time was great so it could have been due to being a Saturday night or an inexperienced server. Still not going back.
The servers were very friendly but the service was extremely slow, especially for a night where they weren't busy at all. We waited about 45 minutes for our calamari apps and after we ordered our food we waited an hour. For the price per plate the food was less that desirable, I wanted to add salt and pepper to my pasta. Building is beautiful and like I mentioned before waitstaff was great.
We had dinner with friends and enjoyed the filet with sides and one person had the scottish salmon.
All dinners were delicious. We also enjoyed the Caprese salad that was very fresh and very good. Our server, Richard, was very attentive. We look forward to our next visit.
For the price, the food is just average. The whipped potatoes were a gummy mess because they were over-whipped. The Brussels Sprouts were oily and unimaginative. And the waiter didn't blacken my fish as requested. The restaurant is on a beautiful spot and doesn't make use of the scenery. A crime.
The ambience inside 37 North was perfect. Nothing too crazy, more on the moderate side, but just enough. My wife ordered the grilled chicken dish which was cooked to perfection. My wife asked for some type of au jus for the whipped potatoes and the waiter said the chief will create some type of chicken base au jus which was delivered in 5 minutes and was delicious. I had the scallops which were cooked to perfection.
This was a great surprise all around. The food blew us away. Our Waitress Kristina(I think) was exceptional. She was very attentive and had great recommendations. The prices were reasonable and fair for the location and quality of food received. I left there trying to figure out how they made the food we ordered have so much flavor. Overall this was a great date night for a couple with 2 kids under 2 that finally got out of the house alone. We will definitely be making the trip form Red Mill back out that way again....soon.
We took friends from NYC and WE LOVED IT! the service was fantastic, attentive to our needs and great personalities. We were having fun with the waitstaff and giving them a very hard time in a playful way and they were taking it in stride and had so much fun with us!
Our waitress was on top of the whole meal. we were there for three hours and everything was prepared to perfection and delivered hot. we never had food delivered on top of a previous course and EVERYTHING was delicious. I had the pan seared scallops and the crust was amazing while leaving the inside buttery and succulent.
If you have been thinking about going here and have not... it is worth the the three $$$
we will be back
Thirty 7 North seems to be caught in a bit of an identity crisis. It's changed a fair amount over the past couple years. All outward appearances indicate an upscale restaurant - nice decor, pleasant/attentive staff, good cocktail/wine list and a menu that shows promise. My issue is that the food often doesn't measure up to the expectations the restaurant seems to want to create for itself. The good: steamed clam appetizer, rockfish (catch of the day) was nicely grilled and fresh, no complaints about the seafood stew. The not so good: fried oyster appetizer - flavorless, bland, way too many fried pickles. They need to rethink this whole dish and start over. Oysters, pickles, the fry coating, and sauce were all a miss. Bananas Foster Bread pudding for dessert was way too dry and unappealing. In the end, it seems like the chef and staff try to get too modern with some of the presentations and accompaniments to the dishes. I think they'd be better served cutting the menu down a bit and just focusing on executing a smaller/simpler number of apps/entrees and doing that consistently before trying to be everything to everyone.
I find Thirty 7 North similar to One Fish, Two Fish which is a stones throw away. However, One Fish, Two Fish seems to execute better. I don't love everything I get a One Fish, Two Fish, but they don't try to do too much with the dishes, which is my main criticism of Thirty 7 North.
We always are impressed with the level of quality, service, and taste from this resataurant. We loved it so much we had our reception here. The waiters are on point and pleasant and the food is just amazing to behold and eat. The drink specials are sumptuous and delicious (try The Heater!).
We try to come here at every possible moment because they've never treated us wrong!
My family loves this place so we eat here often. the Sunday brunch is a delightful bargain. You can order off the menu so everyone gets what they want and the prices are reasonable. I recently tried the
Shrimp and grits for the first time and I'll have to say it was the best I've ever had-not too spicy. I'm not a bacon person but theirs is exceptional. My daughter always gets the seasonal pancake which is huge and made with fresh fruit. If you sit in a booth on the back wall you can watch fresh fish being brought in, weighed, and iced down for transport. Very cool!
Our party of 3 was celebrating a birthday, and unfortunately there was a Paint Night event going on in the main dining room. We were seated in a private room with a door, and all the staff was very apologetic about the noise level. We could hear the music & microphone being used for paint night, and my dad had a hard time hearing our conversation (he wears hearing aids). We would have gone somewhere else if we had known about Paint Night. We will be back, though. Our server was outstanding and helpful at recommending appetizers and entrees. The assistant manager helped us select a bottle of wine. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal & service! Hoping the restaurant chooses not to host Paint Night in the future....
We had a business dinner. Service at bar was very good. Table service was average. Ordered three appetizers. Oysters had pieces of shell in two I had. Pimento cheese should be free. Tuna Poke was solid. 4 entrees- shrimp and grits...good but not great...B+. New York Strip...C-. Two others that were forgettable B's. Two desserts that were also very weak. All that averagness for almost $400. Go a block up the drive to one fish, two fish. I wish we had.
We went here last night to eat yummy farm to table. But now they have mostly pizza and other casual dishes. We left. Too bad, we really liked the old 37 North. I'm sure the pizza is good (they had a nice brick oven installed), but it wasn't what we were in the mood for. No big deal, but they need to update the sample menu/ restaurant description on this site.
Our server was impeccable and they always are at this restaurant. The food is consistently delicious and presented beautifully . Also, the wine list, cocktails and beer selections hit the mark completely. We have always dined as a party of four or more on each of the dozen or so occasions that we have eaten at 37 but sadly we do leave hungry! The largest entree is the Bison and it should be for the price. Even after he had bites of our other three meals; shrimp and grits, tuna, and scallops my son wasn't full. The appetizers and the desserts which are plated the prettiest and really do dazzle are delicious.. In my opinion the desserts are large enough to share. So if you go to 37North be sure not to skip a course, we don't and we still leave hungry. The appetizers and entrees are just to small. We should have gone to one of our regular spots for dinner; croaker, coastal, salt, eat or Zoe's, their portions are larger and price and quality of food are just the same.
There is a new menu, which just adds to the quality of the food offerings. The wine list is very extensive, with some great priced wine. You can spend a lot or spend a little and get a good bottle of wine. The service is outstanding. Darren, our waiter, was very informative about the new menu and provided excellent service. If you go, ask for one of his tables.
My family was sat in a room which closed off to the rest of the restaurant/bar. It was very quiet with its own tv and iPhone hook up to play music in that room only. Very nice ambiance.
The service was extraordinary. Our waiter was very knowledgable and when asked specific questions about the menu he knew them and the one he didn't he quickly ran to get the answer. I'm very impressed.
The food was very good as well! oysters on the half shell for a starter and I had the Scottish salmon. I'm not sure why the chef chose to get the salmon all the way from Scotland but it was a very tasty meal. I also thoroughly enjoyed the beers on tap. They had some local brews as well as a couple good selections from elsewhere.
Overall I am very impressed with my experience as a whole. I will be back.
