Theresa’s South Ratings and Reviews
Discovered this gem not too long ago. Whenever I am in town with my boyfriend, we make sure we get reservations! The pasta is too die for and the service is always so wonderful. We honestly are more than happy to just go here every time we are at the beach and not explore anywhere else! Love that it is byob too. That is key! I’ve been telling my entire family that if they are down there to go for dinner because they will not be disappointed!
The waitress had an attitude that was very negative until she saw we were ordering all levels of food service. We were told to move our table to make room for another table...maybe the management should consider furniture arrangement? We ordered dessert and coffee was served and refilled. The waitress brought the check and I had to mention that we never received dessert and asked he to cancel the dessert offer. Only then did we receive dessert by an aggravated manager
Live locally and was going to travel for a Birthday Dinner when remembered my brother recommending Theresa’s South. Checked out the menu and a great selection for everyone. My wife doesn’t eat seafood and she actually commented while reading the menu that she need time to decide on what to get....there were so many choices.
For appetizers we shared the eggplant pancake with Pesto dipping sauce and the mixed green salad with berries and white balsamic. For dinner our choices were Filet Rissotto (for the non seafood lover) - excellent choice! I choose the seared Yellow Tail Tuna filet cooked perfectly (rare) with a chili soy sauce, cucumber salad, topped with noodles - loved it!
Had to try the Desserts - Apple Tart - delicious & the Bread Pudding delicious as well a little too spongy. Presentation was wonderful & the service was great. We will definitely be back, now we don’t have to travel so far for a creative great meal.
Thanks for an excellent experience :o)
We have been coming to this restaurant for many years, usually 3-4 times a year. We live almost an hour away.
The restaurant's web site on line menu is out dated and does not reflect what is currently being offered for dinner. Our friends checked out the menu on line before dining here and were looking forward to those dishes listed. None were actually available. My friend and I ordered the short rib entrée. He was looking forward to a dish with clams, which was on the online menu. I touted the short ribs as being sublime. The chef decided to change the preparation. In my mind, Bruschetta doesn't come with short ribs? Bruschetta is an Italian tomato salad dish. No short rib gravy was served with the meat, only liquid from the Bruschetta, along with hard pieces of broccoli and cauliflower. We were both not happy with the preparation. At $28 each, I felt we were screwed.
My friend's wife, under protest, ordered the pappardelle with lobster. She was looking forward to a carpaccio appetizer, which was listed on line, and another entrée listed on line, but was not available Saturday night. While the dish had an ample amount of lobster meat, the entire dish was absolutely tasteless. The menu said it should have come with the brandy cream sauce, but was dry and dull. In addition, none of the specials of the day listed on a separate menu had prices. The $16, salad of the day, was excellent. Every other salad was in the $11 range. The Caesar dressing was just okay. My wife ordered pasta with chicken, and was charged the same price as the pasta with lobster. $30. What a rip off!
Our waitress, took our order and vanished. She did not appear until she presented the check.
No one came over during dinner to ask how our dinners were.
When I came home, I was still outraged. I called the restaurant to speak to the owner. I spoke to his brother the general manager. He knew my name, apologized and said he will send me a gift check. I am not looking forward to another visit.
We arrived early and enjoyed a few sips of prosecco out front by the heater. We were then seated just before our reserved time, though not on the porch as I had called earlier in the day to request. Noisy and cramped a bit along the wall. Service was prompt. We shared an app of grilled jumbo shrimp, white beans and artichoke hearts. Beautiful plating, well balanced seasoning and flavors. I initially was interested in ordering a "special" which included sweet potato gnocchi but was informed they were out...and this is at 7:40, so was disappointed.
I asked if I could substitute butternut squash polenta from another offering n the menu but it would involve a $16 update which seemed extreme. I ordered pistachio crusted salmon with grilled asparagus and assorted veggies. Delicious salmon, colorful assortment though swimming in soy-based sauce. My husband had braised short ribs and smashed potatoes. He enjoyed his gravy! No desserts this night.
Theresa's South is a one-fork restaurant with a $30 Meat Loaf Entree! It's in a terrific location in Bay Head on Route 35. The parking is difficult, at least on a Saturday evening. As for white tablecloth dining, the tables are topped with glass. The menu is upscale Italian with a number of specials, none of which were identified by price. When my dining partner asked about the prices, the surly server said "If you're interested in something, I'll tell you."
Unfortunately, I told my friend that Theresa's is known for its meat loaf, so he ordered it. I opted for the pistachio salmon entree with smashed potatoes and roasted asparagus. I ate the roasted asparagus--good--and half the salmon which was overcooked and left the other half and all the smashed potatoes which were unsalted and dry. My friend ate part of the meat loaf, which he shared a bite with me, but barely touched the smashed potatoes and the julienned vegetables topped by thinly fried onion rings. After that, we opted for espresso and the bill.
The attraction to Theresa's, and is worth noting, is that it is BYOB and, as far as I was able to discern, with no corkage charge.
Maybe we chose the wrong entrees, but it doesn't make up for the fact that we used the same fork and knife for our salad course and entree. The bus boy blatantly moved our cutlery on to a side plate when he cleared both my dining partner's tuna ceviche for a first course and then served the salad which we shared, and again moved the cutlery to follow with the main course. How much does it take to wash forks and knives? Oh, and I forgot, we had to ask for water!
Theresa's South is one of my favorite restaurants in the Bay Head, Mantoloking area on the Jersey Shore. Food is consistent and moderately priced. BYOB is certainly a plus. My only negative comment is that is is rather noisy if seated in the main dining area. It is considerably more quiet on the porch. However, when making reservations through open table - especially on a Saturday night, beggars can't be choosers. Staff is always attentive.
I made a reservation for 4. On open table it states parties of 5 or more limited to two hours. I noted one guest was disabled. Hostess gave us appropriate table at entry. Our guest had been paralyzed and hospitalized for months. This was his first outing as he was uncomfortable being seen as handicapped. We would have entertained at our home but it has steps to enter. Waitress was wonderful. Told her of situation before guest arrived. It takes him awhile to chew and swallow still. We had three courses. Bill was over $350 and we gave a generous tip. We were finishing our coffee when Manager tried to take away coffee. I told him we were not quite done. He told us to finish it in bar area as he needed table and we were taking too long. My husband quickly escorted our guest to car as we knew he was unable to stand or maneuver in that space and after a nice evening did not want him to have a setback in confidence. I approached the man who told us to move and explained situation. He was more interested in flipping the table and reiterated we had taken too long. I asked for the manager, and he was the manager. We will not dine there again, and I am certain they don't care.
If there are seating times or time limits they should state this. If you are handicapped and require more time do not go here. You will not be accommodated kindly.
Terrific food at Theresa's South when we dined there this past Saturday. Great menu options for appetizers and entrees plus an extensive specials list to choose from.
Service just ok, not great. I must admit I expected more on the service end, given the restaurant's rules on reservations and cancellation policy/fees. I'm sure no-shows are the bane of a restaurant's existence but we didn't appreciate the numerous emails/ contacts to ensure we would appear for dinner at our reserved time. In addition, had to ask for the spotty/dirty wine glasses to be removed when we were seated.
Also, and this is a simple fix, we appreciate when the server brings each course that they know who gets each dish, instead of auctioning off the dishes to find out who ordered what. Not terribly difficult to execute, especially for a party of two.
Other than that, really good food and we felt we got a good bang for our buck.
I had been there once before and we had the best meal ever and then went back recently and it was not so great! the food was sort of just mediocre and I had to send the plates back because they were dirty.
It was disappointing.
I'd go again to see if it is any different because it is a nice place.
Our squid appetizer and caesar salads were excellent. However, our main pasta courses, lobster papardelle and rigatoni bolognese, were tasteless and almost inedible, tasting nothing like they should be. I hope this was due to us eating after the summer season and the former cook setting sail for greener pastures. If not I would hire a new chef.
Teresa's is a neighborhood gem and we will frequent this restaurant again and again. The eggplant appetizer is a must order; the pasta dishes are fresh and well prepared; the steaks and seafood always a hit. With a BYO policy, the meal is ALWAYS cost effective, and the service friendly and personalized. We will be back!
love this convenient place to dine with relaxing atmosphere and polite staff and very tasteful food.....but I suggest the staff don't rush our dinners and start to remove plates when still eating and please don't take plates while others are enjoying the food.
