Thea Mediterranean Cuisine - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
I had called earlier in the day to make a reservation note and it seemed like the person who answered didn't know what a reservation note was. I said that we had vegetarians and one vegan in our party. When we arrived and looked at the menu, there was literally one option on the entire menu that we could have, and they were out of it. We asked about the vegetable tarine, but our server couldn't really explain this dish in depth at all. After we asked for another minute to finalize our order, our server never came back. This is where the night turned out terrible. We were literally ignored for a very long time. 15-20 mins go by and no one checks in on us. We stacked our menus to show we were done, even stacked our plates on the appetizer we had. Finally I asked for the check from a different server, and it took a long time to arrive. We just wanted to go somewhere else to eat that had more options because we were starving! The whole situation at the end with the check took another ten minutes. I will never recommend this place based on lack of service alone.
As usual, enjoyed our dinner at Thea. This is our favorite spot in Santana Row for pre-movie dinner. We were early, hence it was quiet. The menu has changed since our last visit, seems a little simpler, but my husband's lamb skewer looked terrific, and I thoroughly enjoyed the garides (shrimp). We had the saganaki starter (Thea's is one of the few that still flames it at table, our server did a great job), and the dates, which are a little sweet (of course), but very tasty morsels. My only gripe would be that they've stopped carrying any Greek or Turkish wines -- they used to have a nice greek white, I thought.
When we first arrived, we sat at the bar and tried the Sundrop cocktail, another premier cocktail and dates with bacon/bleu cheese. They were all very good. Our bartender was friendly and helpful. At the table, the four of us had a couple of appetizers (we especially loved the arancini) and the rack of lamb, swordfish kabobs (a special), salmon and moussaka as entrees. We all enjoyed our meals very much. Service was great. It’s a little pricey but then it is Santana Row. We will definitely go back.
Greek food was so very good. Service was slow but not fault of server as he was the only one working and had maybe 4-6 tables to cover. He was helpful with suggesting choices. Poor guy was working hard! More help needed.
Service got 3 stars just because he was alone in serving. He did his best and we were in no hurry.
Overall a decent place. Our table was missing silverware. Had to take from a different table as we couldn't flag down one of the many employees in an almost completely empty restaurant. The menu on the website didn't match the one in the restaurant. They didn't have the mash potatoes ready for my filet mignon, gave me roasted potatoes instead. Disappointed because when you spend at a pricey restaurant you expect better, this place didn't deliver.
My chicken kabobs were excellent as usual but two of my friends ordered the filet which were both really undercooked. They had to eat around the outside of it (since they did not want to send it back).
Sitting outside was very cold. They ran out of propane for the heating lamps. My friends aren't going to let me live that down for awhile because I selected the restaurant. LOL. Thanks for asking!
We'd eaten here a few years ago - the food then was good, but didn't have all of our Greek favourites.
It does now! The braised lamb that I had was outstanding, and their moussaka instantly became my wife's favourite!
Next time we'll probably get a range of appetisers - I want to try the flaming lamb meatballs, and the selection of other appetisers is enough to build a substantial meal on.
My only non-5-star food I had the saganaki (flamed fried cheese) - it is Asiago, which is a bit too mild and soft - Kefalotyri, a harder, stronger cheese (traditional for saganaki) works better for this dish.
This won't stop us from returning - everything else - the food, drinks, and service - were stellar!
I have eaten at a lot of the restaurants on Santana Row but did not have the opportunity to try this place. It was fabulous. If you like Mediterranean, you will love this restaurant. We decided to just eat appetizers because there were so many we liked. We had the Tapas Sampler and waiter was kind to swap out one of the items because of allergies. Also had the charred marinated asparagus and a plate of fried vegetables/fish. Everything was fabulous. We finished off with a Bougatsa and a Sokolatina [ri]ch chocolate cake with raspberry sauce. Although I usually don't drink coffee at night, I decided to have the Turkish coffee.....was great. Don't miss this place. It is just round the corner. Lest I forget....cocktail menu very good: a blackberry smash with bourbon excellent and another that I can remember the name of. Overall a great experience and I hope to be back in San Jose again to try their dinner entrees.
Happy hours from 3pm to 6pm ; Monday to Friday
Ask for Happy Hours menu!
Mediterranean Pesto (pizza) is really good and vegetarian friendly!
Noise can get little excessive when their staff chats and giggles and flirts behind bar counter...
Overall services are clean and standard
Very short staffed on a Saturday night as our server had over 20 tables and was seating customers as well. Only about two servers in restaurant in a Saturday night and no host/hostess. They acted like this was normal and despite the sever working hard service was slow for everything and a number of tables were frustrated. Never an apology or acknowledgement that this was a problem my any of the staff. Premium prices for terrible service.
I don't know if they were understaffed or what but we stood at the hostess station for well over 15 minutes before anyone came over. After that it was another 10 minutes before we were sat. Once seated another 20 minutes went by before a waiter stopped by our table. Then another 25 minutes before our drinks arrived at the table. The food did arrive hot and tasted very good but the service was so poor I doubt we will be going back.
Recently went to this place for Valentine's day dinner with my wife. The service was slow for obvious reasons, so no complaints there, but my the chicken item that my wife ordered in main-course wasn't fully cooked. She hardly ate any. They gave a complimentary dessert to make up for it. In the end, it was an average experience. I've been to this place before, and usually the food is pretty good. Which is why I'm giving average ratings
My girlfriend and I went the day before Valentine's Day and everything was awesome. From the food to the service, everything was pretty much spot on. Our server was fantastic, she was attentive and humorous. They also had a belly dancer and had the gentleman at the table next to us get up and dance. That was our dinner and a show for the night. The food is always awesome here. It's probably my girlfriends and my favorite restaurant to go to. I got the filet mignon, which is my favorite and my girlfriend got something with a lamb. And she killed it (She kind of never finishes her food). But not only the food there is good but their cocktails are too!
But enough reading about my experience and just go there and create your own!
Very disappointing. I had planned a friends birthday at the restaurant since she wanted Mediterranean food and we had never been there. The menu online is different from the one I the restaurant. It really makes a difference if you vegeerian as there were more options on the menu online but I was told they changed the chef and now they had a different menu. We were at the table for 36 minutes and asked for bread 3 times while we were having our drinks but no bread was brought to us. We saw other tables being served bread but our waitress seemed very forgetful. Finally I spoke to the manager after which the service changed and the rest of the dinner went smoothly.
Very good food, the Fillet Mignon was soft and juicy, all the food we ordered was delicious. We came at 9pm on New Year's eve, the restaurant was not full so the noise level was very pleasant. They have a piano in the middle of the room but nobody was playing. It would have been nice to hear piano music on this special night.
