I am reluctant to rave any more about this place than I already do, for fear that it will become too popular and turn itself into that dreaded Portlandia "reservationless" brunch episode. But I'll take my chances and rave anyway: This place has the taste, talent and street cred to back up its foodie reputation as a local go-to, the stellar service to keep people coming back, and the laid back, five star style to remind even those from the West hills there are still reasons to venture beyond the river. Well done Woodsman! See you again soon!
Our first visit to the Woodsman and we will definitely be back. Hostess , wait staff and bartender all great. Food was top notch - comfort food with a southern flair. Burger and fries easily one of the best in the city. Blackened catfish and side of mac n' cheese also terrific. Short beer on tap list but selections more than make up for it - had a wonderful Kolsch and a Saison. As an added the bonus the music they play was fantastic. A great spot for special occasion, date night or just everyday dining. Highly recommend the Woodsman Tavern.
We had a reservation for 845 but weren’t seated until 915. The food came out really, really slowly; shockingly, since there was only one other seating at our time. The oysters were amazing but that requires little skill or effort. Cocktails are great. The food is really overpriced and sub-par generally. It’s elevated comfort food with fancy menu-speak and local ingredients but the execution is marginal. The food looks pretty but tastes only ok except from the burger which is excellent. Server was awkward and made lame excuses about why the food took so long. The hostess was incredibly sweet, energetic and gracious. The atmosphere as always is super cozy and fun.
Doug Adams from Top Chef (finalist) revamped their food and it is SO GOOD. Fried chicken, hush puppies are definitely a must (mac-and-cheese was pretty good but wasn't my favorite). I don't how you can make fried chicken and hush puppies an exquisite, delicate, succulent fine dining food, but Doug did it. The restaurant was already known for its wooden plank fish dish already and Doug also tweaked that (didn't try it but I'm sure it's good).
we went there for our 6 month anniversary because of the fact my wife follows food shows and it was a treat that the restaurant set it up for us to meet Doug. Probably not the quiet "ambient" anniversary you would think of because it was a bit loud from the bar scene, but we went for the food and the staff made the night super great for us.
The hostess ruined my evening. Not only did she not acknowledge us directly, she sat the couple who entered the restaurant after us, before even acknowledging us. Then she sat us next to the only occupied table in the restaurant. Fortunately, they were a civilized couple as we were only inches from them. In my head, I pretended that all the empty booths were already reserved. Turns out that they weren't. Just a very bad front of house. The food was good. Just really hard to focus on the food after such a rough start.
We recently read the write-up in the Willamette Week and thought it would be fun to go to the Woodsman again. We hadn't been in years and remembered having delicious dinners there before. We were sorely disappointed. We had expected something similar to what we experienced before - fresh, delicious country/NW style country cooking. However, this place has changed! It is more like a local joint now. They have a comfort food theme and frankly the menu is quite limited. We liked the cauliflower steak appetizer well enough but it could have been cooked just a little longer. The crab rolls were simply crab salad in a white bread roll and the vegetable crudite was skimpy at best with a poor presentation. The ranch dressing accompanying the crudite was delicious (I later ordered a side for my roasted potatoes) but there was a lack of vegetable variety to make ordering this dish worthwhile. I got the trout which I had ordered and enjoyed previously at the Woodsmen years ago. It was slightly rare, which many people enjoy but was not to my liking, and it had so many small bones I could not even see them in the dim light to remove them in order to eat it. My husband got the burger and liked it well enough but reported it wasn't anything special. The fries and sauce that accompanied it were delicious and we all enjoyed them very much. My father-in-law seemed to enjoy the pork chop too but did comment on the presentation. It was sliced as if it were a pork loin roast or the like. My mother-in-law ordered the shrimp and crab louie and enjoyed it all except the bacon which she felt was too strong for the delicate flavors of the shrimp and crab. Desert pan brownie and pecan pie were good overall, although the pecan pie could have been heavier on the pecans and the brownie was a bit too sweet. Service was slow.
All-in-all, I would recommend the Woodsman only if you were prepared for a mediocre meal.
I myself will likely not be returning.
Another opportunity to Top Chef-stalk. Doug Adams is the chef now at Woodsman Tavern. His fried chicken, a winning dish of his, was phenomenal. Added to that, collard greens, beautifully prepared, and a buttery biscuit and wedge salad, and you are in for a treat of a meal. We had a few of their cocktails as well, for a enjoyable, well-rounded evening.
A great dinner with fantastic fried chicken and sides. My wife had the trout that was cooked to perfection. We shared a couple of side dishes, the mashed potatoes and gravy (just like mom made) and a squash dish that was really yummy. I also had hush puppies, which took me back to times spent in the south, they were that good. I highly recommend going for brunch and having one of the conditioned bloody marys.
