The Wooden Nickel Restaurant & Lounge - Monroeville Ratings and Reviews
This restaurant is quite the find, drove by it many times, first time here. The food was very good, I ordered the salmon oscar, the salmon was not dry with plenty of crab flakes and delicious asparagus. The sirloin was just as good, well cooked, with the potatoes that were seasoned well. The waitress was very friendly, and the restaurant was very clean and just well decorated. Definitely will go here again!!!
Was pleasantly surprised... drove by this restaurant for YEARS but had never been there. It was excellent. Pricey but worth the $$. Excellent service. We appreciated the spacing between tables, it was nice to not be on top of your "neighbor." A great special occasion restaurant.
This was the first time I was at this restaurant and went at the recommendation of a friend. The food was excellent - fine dining at its best. The wait staff was knowledgeable and friendly. I also liked the atmosphere of the restaurant. My friend and I are already making plans to return perhaps around the holidays. Great overall experience
We ate there last Wednesday and had a 7pm reso. When we walked in you can hear a baby screaming and crying in the dining room so the host asked if the bar area was ok since the baby had been crying for awhile...we said yes. We got sat in the bar area and it took 15 minutes for a server to come over. We ordered a beer and a wine along with a calamari app which was great!! Our server brought us our app and took our dinner order. We weren't finished with our appetizer and our meals came. We got crabcakes and the scallops...both were very good. After we were done with our meals it took her a long time to check on us and give us our bill. It seemed like she was more interested in going outside to smoke and talk to the bar crowd then give us good service. We will be back for the food and hopefully the service is more attentive.
The atmosphere was really nice but only 3 people truly enjoyed the food out of 15, they are a lil too light on the sauce and seasoning. Our server seemed to be annoyed until my husband asked her if we were bothering her with our request, then she was fine afterwards! We spent a little under $500 and I myself was not happy with the experience. It was my son's 21st birthday and he was disappointed in his meal.
Granted we went on Mother's Day with a fixed menu, but we were not overall pleased. Once seated, we were told by the waitress that they were already out of a few things from the already limited amount of selections. She said it was because we were dining so late. This was a 4:30pm dinner, so I would hate to see what was left if we would have come at 6pm. The service was slow in our opinion. We were asked if we wanted desert which we replied no, so the waitress left we assumed to go get our checks. She came back several minutes later with no checks and only to ask if we wanted desert again. We told her that she had already asked us that, so then she had to leave again to go get the checks which caused us to wait longer. For the price paid, I felt the portions were too small. A small salad, 4 oz. filet(seemed even smaller), and a scoop of mashed potatoes for $24 is not good value. My brother had the same meal and was not pleased with the portions nor taste of his entire meal. The brussel sprouts were undercooked and not edible. We definitely will be dining elsewhere for Mothers Day next year.
The menu selection was very sparse due to it being Mother's Day. The service was VERY SLOW! The food was not good....you needed a steak knife to cut the chicken. And the chicken was dry! Will not make reservations for any future Mother's Day. I have been here on other occasions and have had a much better experience. Now I know not to come here on special occasions/holidays.
Went with a group of 7 for Mother's Day. Food wasn't as good as I've had previously, and my mother in law had to send back her steak 3 times for it not being cooked to her liking. However the manager took her meal off our bill and gave her some lobster Mac to take home.
We had reservations for 3 people at 2 o'clock. When we got there and checked in the hostess said it would be a few minutes. Twenty minutes had passed and we asked her how much longer she said 5 more minutes. When she came to get us she says your with the party of 10? We said no? We checked in with her from the start and said we were the party of three. She Walked us to the dining area and then left us standing in the middle of everyone eating and didn't show us our table. Finally as two more
Minutes passed she came back and our table was still not ready. We asked to be able to sit down because we felt awkward standing in the middle of the room as everyone was eating. We never received bread plates. We asked the server for them and they never came. The coffee was cold. For the second cup she said she would brew a new pot and that took 15 minutes. Overall the service was poor, we looked around and felt like our table was the only one getting bad service. My water cup was empty and when I asked for more I felt like the server was annoyed. Overall we do not plan to return.
There were three of us having dinner that evening, two were celebrating birthdays. I ordered Scallops with vegetables, DH had Parmesean encrusted chicken, and friend had Salmon over a bed of spinach. We were all pleased with our meals, the service could not have been better and the Birthday desserts were delightful (comped). I liked that the chef came to our table to inquire how we liked our meals. The meals included a soup or salad, both of which were perfect. I would definitely return here.
Our appetizer of Calamari was very tough and sauce very bland. Our French Onion soups were also very bland. My salmon was excellent but asparagus was quite undercooked and hard. My husbands steak was very bland and not cooked properly. Definietly not worth the price.
This is a very nice restaurant, great place for a special date. The food is always delicious. My husband and I come here every year for our anniversary and have never been disappointed. The dining room with a fireplace is a quiet area to have lunch or dinner. The service is very good.
Well prepared food, nice choices and reasonable prices. Salad or soup is included with an entre (and entre comes with a veggie and starch). My 8 oz. filet with horseradish mashed potatoes and asparagas was perfectly done and all was delicious. The spinach salad had a nice dressing and the tomato and cucumber was chopped (no seeds!). $30! A bargain, in my mind. Had a generously poured Manhattan, made to my specifications--$8. We recommended this to friends who went the next evening. Will remember this restaurant for my next trip to Monroeville.
Two of us had the filets wrapped in bacon and they melted in our mouths...and one of us had the filet with crabmeat which also was delicious. Then the three of us shared a piece of the key lime pie which was even better than the filets. Definitely going back for another very delicious meal!
Unbelievable food. Definitely worth the steep price. You get what you pay for here. Perfect portions, great service. The only thing I don't like is the fact that country music is playing here. Its barely loud enough to hear, but if it gets quiet you can hear it, and it doesn't fit. Still 5/5. Tiramisu was BOMB. Also, for those of you complaining of slow service, they're trying not to rush people in and out of there. Its supposed to be a fine dining experience. And the waitresses were always around and easy to flag down when I needed another drink between courses. I wish I would've known about this place before I did, because I would've been a regular a long time ago.
I made our reservations on line and the question was "what occasion" and I typed in Birthday.
I thought the waitress would have asked us what occasion but she didn't, but I did hear the other waitresses as their tables if they were there for any occasion??? It was my 70th birthday!!! My husband and I ordered onion soup then our entrée was Chicken Parm. Well, my chicken was stringing and my husband said his first piece of chicken was stringy but the second piece was better. I didn't eat the second piece. The waitress seemed to be more interested in making sure the other tables were set and had there wines glasses on them. Not sure if she was expecting more customers at her section!!! We were there a year ago for our 49th anniversary with friends and had not problems that why we decided to go again and we had a gift card. I will make sure our family know not to give us gift cards to the Wooden Nickel again!!! Thank anyway.
Christmas Eve Dinner ruined! The food came out cold. The "Key West Vegetables" were broccoli and Bell Pepper. When asked by the waitress about the food I said the cuts of meat were terrible. She said "there was nothing she could do about that". I've had flank steak that was better than the Prime Rib my wife ordered. It was overcooked to dark brown and leather. My filet wasn't much better. No desserts were available on Christmas Eve! ?? I am 61 years old and have eaten in restaurants from LA to France and a lot of places in between. I am saying this was the worst dining experience I've had the misfortune of experiencing. The owner should be embarrassed by what he/she is serving. There never was an attempt to appease our dissatisfaction in any way. Avoid this place is my opinion.
