The Wood Restaurant & Lounge Ratings and Reviews
We booked for a birthday dinner on our way home to Calgary from B.C. Our server way amazing. The burgers were okay. There was not a lot flavour. It reminded me of a pre-made boxed burger. The ingredients on it were fresh. The Caesar salad had to be picked through as there were a lot of brown ends. Desserts were fantastic!
Great place for a casual supper with friends. Surf and Turf was delicious and reasonably priced. Six o'clock seating was not all busy for a Friday night and food was well timed. Like other reviews service is lacking, had to get our own high chair, only saw one waiter. Would try it again.
Our server Claire C. was very attentive and kind. Very professional and anticipated our needs. Drinks and food were delivered quickly. She checked back at appropriate times and made good suggestions.
The fire was going in the fireplace and the view of the mountains was beautiful. The restaurant was reasonably priced. We were celebrating an anniversary and we were surprised by The Wood with a treat. Highly recommend for a comfortable place to get a decent meal and great service!
The blond waitress worn a to short skirt, we could see her but. She also forgot a lot of things. The wine i ordered, the extra mayo we asked for etc. The food was really good and fast. We have been there for only 45 minutes. Good price also. We only thought it was very strange that they asked for a tip on the receipt. And the percent for tips that they asked for was a bit high (they said 15-20 percent was normal in Canada).
Food ok for a restaurant of this quality (overpriced) but service was horrid. Empty appetizer plates left on table until mains were done, empty glasses not noticed and no 'would you like another'. May have just been because server was stoned or hated job, but left a bad impression.
It was easy to make a reservation on line and so, although it was busy on the patio,we were able to skip the line up and get a table outside. The staff was very good, the young lady who seated us was quick to find our reservation and clear a table and the servers are always good there. The food is bar food and it is great--with lots to choose from. Well done, once again.
Wood Restaurant was very inviting with a great staff and atmosphere. My wife and I are on our honeymoon and they gave us a glass of champagne to celebrate. The fixed price menu for the Canmore Food Festival was amazing. Our waitress Caitlin gave us a bunch of suggestions for this part of our trip. HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend.
We have walked by the Wood Restaurant in the summer and always have noticed a lineup so we wanted to try your restaurant out for Valentines Day. We were excited to share the full rack of ribs for $30. When I asked the server what type of rub was on the ribs, he said it is a BBQ type rub and was not sure - but guaranteed to us that they are delicious. We received our ribs very fast and we were surprized as ribs do take at least 10-12 minutes on the Grill. We were given steamed or boiled ribs. These boiled and rubbery ribs had a strange mixture of pepper and BBQ sauce tasting like it was right out of a bottle. Your Ribs were so disappointing and such a shame to charge that amount when you do not put them on the grill. At least on your menu mention that they are "boiled" or "steamed" and the sauce was splotched and gooped on so sloppily that did not make us feel Special or that your Chef really cares at all for cooking. I think you should be aware of this in your kitchen. Thank you.
Our overall experience was great! The food and beer were perfect, but the service wasn't as good. Our server didn't refill our water (I only got water) and wasn't really around, nor did he check on us after we got our food. I would go again though and I recommend this restaurant.
went specifically for tue night steak sandwich deal and it was absolutely fab and deelish, great server, friend had 1/2 ribs which looked deelish and he agreed. garlic mash spuds which I love too. Caesar side included was great value. we ordered extra rounds enjoyed our stay so much. were watching election results (nov. 8) and bar seats - server (young male ... 7 - 9 30 ish pm) accommodated by turning on one of bar TVs where we sat - great place (we are locals BTW)
I came with 3 of my friends to celebrate a joyous occasion and was very happy with the service and generally the atmosphere of The Wood. Had been there once previously but my expectations were exceeded at every avenue. Our server was fantastic but I don't recall her name.
My girlfriend ordered a chicken club with fries. There was very little actual chicken included with the sandwich, and the fries unfortunately were not edible because they were way too salty.
I ordered a 9 oz. peppered steak with pepper soup. Both were good, and the steak was cooked the way I like it. My only complaint here was the relatively small portion for the price I paid.
Our server (a lady) was mainly what soured our experience here. She had given us a drink menu along with the dining menu, but we realized it lacked a wine list after we were seated. Her reaction and body language when we asked her to see the wine list was the first thing that raised eyebrows. Once we ordered our drinks, she came by reasonably often to make sure they were refreshed, but she did not come back to see how our meals were tasting after they were delivered. Instead, she came by when I was finished and my girlfriend had eaten all she could. When she was told about the issue with the salty fries, she didn't handle the situation in a courteous and professional manner. My girlfriend felt that she was rude toward her, and I would agree. We were offered 10% off of our bill, which is better than nothing, but I don't think the chicken club should have shown up on my bill at all.
Relaxed atmosphere. Friendly and competent service. Wanted to order the featured pasta dish but were told "we are out". We ordered the stir fry which was very good. Overall good experience but were not offered a second glass of wine. The restaurant was not aware of our online reservation
Following a recommendation from a local business, we (me and two friends) had dinner at your establishment on July 12th and 13th. We had such a wonderful meal and excellent, friendly and helpful service on July 12th we decided to return tonight (July 13th).
One member of our party returned their steak as it was medium rather than medium rare as requested. Another member of our party received a garden salad with a large chunk of the romaine lettuce core. The third member of our party's salad was watery as if the lettuce had been recently washed and not dried. Both the steaks and salads had been enjoyed last evening with the steak cooked to perfection and the salad amazing, crisp and dry where the dressing's flavours could be enjoyed.
These issues aside, our main concern was the level of service received from Erica M #160. We received minimal service. We felt as if we were a bother, infringing on her time. We had to ask for water refills, no offer of a second glass of wine for the member having a glass of wine with dinner and an inordinate wait after receiving a dessert menu to find out if we would like desserts.
Last night the restaurant was very busy and we received excellent service. Had we not had such excellent service and wonderful meals we would not have returned tonight. Erica upon presenting our bills did reduce each by 10% for the kitchen issues. As appreciated as this gesture was it did not make the dining experience a pleasant. It was very difficult to get her attention and noticed on more than one occasion and by two members of our party that we were on the receiving end of dirty glares each time she walked by to serve other tables.
Had our experience both nights been similar to the first we would have gladly recommended your establishment to friends and family visiting Canmore.
Should we ever return to The Wood we would be definitely requesting an alternative server.
The Wood is basically a pub. It does have a restaurant and is accepting of kids. What they call 'The Lounge' is really a bar, not exactly a sports bar though it has 4 televisions and can get boysterous on hockey nights, also accepts children, though there maybe a time limit? There is a splendid patio/terrace that can get very busy on warm evenings. The service is usually prompt and friendly. If they ask you to wait it is probably to give the small kitchen time to catch up with orders. On busy days there is sometimes a line-up onto the sidewalk, so we always book a table. They do not take bookings for the patio. Monday night is 'wings night', always busy, but 45c/wing or $4.50 for 10 is a bargain. Join the locals and be patient.
Our group eats here every year during our annual girls weekend. This year we had a reservation as it is always busy. We arrived considerably early and the host was more than accommodating and got us seated with very little wait time. The service was friendly and quick, the food was good, exactly as we expected. We enjoy the location, food, and service and will return again during our next weekend gathering.
We booked a table for a Friday evening, however, on arrival it was obvious they had forgotten about us. No tables were prepared and they had to wipe one down and set it before we could sit down. The room was cold. They had a fire but it was not lit and to be honest I couldn't wait to get back in the car and put the heating on.
The food was ok, and the service was quite good, but the overall experience was disappointing.
This restaurant really let me down. It started off well, we were sat in a timely fashion and our server brought us waters while we looked over the drink menu, but then we did not see her anywhere in the dining room for approximately 10-15 minutes after that. It was not very busy, and it seemed like the 3 other tables in the restaurant had also been waiting for a while. When she arrived to take our drink order, we were also ready to order food but she quickly ran off after we ordered our drinks and did not return with them for another 10 minutes. The food was okay, I liked the BBQ wings, while my partner did not. My meal was good, but his steak was completely burnt and unable to eat, and salad was bland. We never got a chance to send it back because no staff came and checked on our meals until we were finished and had our plates on the edge of the table to be cleared. We also assumed if we sent it back we would be without food for a long time as it wasn't the fastest kitchen. Place has potential to be great, but some more staff is definitely needed in order for tables to be adequately taken care of. Quite overpriced for sub-par food.
We went here for a quick dinner. It was difficult at first to tell if the guy who seated us actually worked for the restaurant. In fact, it was only the apron the waiter was wearing that assured us there were staff. That might also be because there seemed to be only one waiter for the whole place. The lounge was busy and he tried his best but we could have easily walked out without paying and nobody would have noticed.
The menu is also very small with a lot of mixed dishes. It was touch to tell what any of the mains came with or if we could swap out for allergies or special diets. Since we didn't see that much of our waiter, it's also unfortunate that we couldn't ask questions either.
I had the beef on a bun and it was ok. Too much bread and sauce though. My partner had the burger and it was ok too. No way to tell if they put bacon on it or not so we took a chance.
He did ask for no onions and they complied. We shared the spinach salad. It was very dry, and seemed like they dumped a bag of spinach on a plate with 6 or 8 pieces of beets and a tablespoon of feta and called it a salad.
All in all, I have no idea why this place is so busy. We certainly didn't find anything to go back for.
The Wood is a good place to go in theory as it's cute, good location, and bigger tables for groups in the lounge, but the service is terrible. Slow... slow slow.. and definitely unapologetic.
The server cheered up by the end of the dinner but the beginning was awful.
booked reso in a panic and didn't read reviews, and after reading the reviews I was very nervous. It was a Friday night of a long weekend and many reviews stated no open table resos were honored on long weekends or during the summer. Luckily they weren't busy and sat us. Hostess was extremely rude and made us feel very unwelcome when we mentioned to her we were in a rush. Almost turned around and went elsewhere because of her. Our server was efficient. Not friendly but efficient. Food as good. Would come back, hopefully with a cheerier server.
We made a resevation for this restaurant because it was a Friday night and we had just picked up guests from Calgary who had a long day from flying overseas. We wanted to make sure that they have a nice dining on their first night in Canada. It was a nice and sunny day. We saw tables outside and we thought the weather would make this dining an enjoyable experience. Our hostess guided us to our table which was inside. The tables inside were dark which made the atmosphere a bit gloomy. Therefore, we asked the hostess if it was possible to eat at the tables outside. We were told that the reserved tables are only inside and it was not possible to eat outside unless we wait for the outside tables to open. However, the way the hostess said this was with a very annoyed tone as if we were making a monstrous request. Now, it is understandable that this request was not the most favourable, due to its spontaneity and that the restaurant had specific plans, but these requests should not be treated as if it is outrageously inconvenient. We observed the hostess and waitresses gathering and discussing about our situation with irritation. Their displeasure was very evident on their faces. We were told that the wait would be 20 minutes. There were tables outside and there were already some empty tables; it took them 30 minutes to give us a table as if they purposely wanted us to wait, because they surely saw us waiting patiently. When we finally received a table, the service was still unpleasant. I do not think it is enjoyable for anyone to have a waitress who shows a fake smile, and when done serving us, immediately has a straight face. The thoughts of all the waitresses were very transparent. I read some reviews before making this reservation. Some people wrote not to go to this restaurant, but I thought they just had a bad day. I should have listened to them. The service of this restaurant was absolutely unforgivable. I was extremely embarrased to our guests.
Food and price were standard for this type of restaurant. The service was really poor. We were 6 adults and 1 child. We wait more than 15 min to order our drinks and get them after 15 min. High chair was required at front, we found one ourselves due to nobody brought it to us.
Appetizer never came. Drinks for kids are severed in glass. Normally, kid's drinks comes in plastic glass with lip to avoid spills. Before leaving, our waiter spilled a drink on a kid and lady where she was serving.
We were there on a week night at the end of October so the place was not busy at all- I think normally this would be very busy. It's central location, good sized patio and attractive appearance ensures it will be busy on the weekends.
It was great for us- near where we were staying- short walk. The meal was not expensive; nice ambiance, very good service- enjoyed the beers.
