The restaurant was accommodating. Our table was originally in a very noisy section of the restaurant near the bar. The staff provided us with a table in a less noisy area. The food was perfectly cooked and delicious.
The windlass offers quality food and many menu choices. (Be sure to try the pizza). The view is spectacular, the restaurant in situated on the water. Friendly staff, friendly patrons. You can dress up, you can go casual. Go to eat and you won’t be disappointed. Live music on certain nights, loud enough to hear low enough to enjoy conversation at your table. Excellent experience.
Love the newly renovated Windlass! Bar is lively, service is amazing and food was delicious, great menu options! We went there for our 24th anniversary and my 55 Birthday, definitely becoming our favorite place to celebrate! Can't wait to go by boat soon!
Great food, although my appetizer and entree were both spicier than I expected. But it is just TOO LOUD in the revamped Windlass. I'm glad they ditched the horrendous carpeting and vinyl booths, but something needs to be done about the noise level. I could barely hear my companion sitting next to me and my husband across the table was totally lost to the conversation. Of course I'll go back--we live right down the street and it is beautiful--but it is one NOISY restaurant.
A little too noisy and they currently did not have a sushi chef on staff- but overall very good!!
Bright, airy decor and friendly, helpful service. This is our first visit since the restaurant was remodeled and we will definitely be back.
Second time here. Wow awesome dinner. Prime Rib special is delicious and hugh piece of meat. The view of Lake Hopatcong is great! Can't wait to go back!
Had not been here since it was renovated and reopened by new owner. Tried to get in during the summer, but should have made reservations. Have been here two times since, and all I can say is WOW! When we complimented the waiter about the vegetables, the chef came out to thank us. Cozy, warm, friendly. Can't wait to go back.
Went for the Oktoberfest. They did a great job with the food, even the red cabbage was awesome! If there was some German Music it would have been perfect! Save the recipes we'll be back for it next year!
This is our second time going .. request a table close to the window and advised them it was my boyfriend's bday. It was a perfect setting and our server was perfect... she came out with a candle on the desert and just made everything perfect.
Food was good , the absolute worst was the smell from the septic tank near the entrance to the restaurant. That needs to be resolved.
Rather disappointing experience, given the good reputation of the Windlass. Acoustics inside are bad, noise levels uncomfortably high; service was only fair (waitress forgot to bring bread 3x, etc) food was only fair. We do not plan to return any time soon.
The atmosphere is too loud, the décor reminds me of 1950's style cafeteria and the food is not worth the price.
The service, however was outstanding. Our server was one of the best servers I've ever had. She was polite, quick and very attentive.
Parking is terrible!!! We won't go back on a Friday or Saturday night.
Again the service was very poor
We were consistent customers of the previous Windlass and I must say we miss it very much.
The chicken was a bit rubbery and the salads are never chilled.
It was not crowded at all but it took almost 20 minutes or more before I had to ask the hostess for a member of the waitstaff to at least offer us a drink.
We try and try to give the resturant another chance but always seem to be disappointed.😁
This was our first time trying out this restraurant, from a suggestion of a friend. It was in fact very loud, like the other reviews I felt like I was in a cafeteria. Aside from that, the food was very generic an sub-par. The steak was flavorable, but tasted like they used Adobo, or some other generic seasoning. The fra diavolo sauce tasted literally like it came out of a Chef Boyardee can. After letting them know that the dish was flat out inedible, they were prompt to help us out with a substitution, and very willing to accommodate, however they did want specifics "What's wrong with the sauce" instead of simply taking our word for it. We also received a couple stares from the manager across the room afterwards. I think it was a first time, and last time experience.
Been going to the WL for 35 years. Don't like the new indoor dining room, but the outdoor seating area is spectacular! Too bad you can't make reservations for outdoor seating.
Everything was great except for the waitress. She was in a rush. We were enjoying a date and while we were talking she comes with pizza to go box as if we were ready to leave. I didn't ask for a box. Then when we had dessert and before I took a bite of it she returned with the check. We immediately paid her, she counted her tip in front of us. Then sat at table in sight and started counting all of her tips for the evening. Tacky and annoying. Maybe she just had a bad day. Aside from that I can't wait to go back!
Loud, Loud, Loud.
My Ceasar salad was missing the garlic and anchovies. The duck breast with cherry sauce was missing cherries. My husbands meal and appitizer were good
An average restaurant with an amazing location! Did not dine inside, but went inside to look. Interior seemed less than cozy. Will try a dinner service and review that.
Went early (4:45) to celebrate a career milestone with a date and overall had a great experience from the atmosphere, servers, and the amazing views. The only disappointment was the dish I ordered. I had the Mahi Mahi with clams over linguine (which looked delicious) but unfortunately it was pretty bland. The fish had no flavor nor the linguine it was served on. The clams were good but were a side to the dish. Besides my meal (date ordered grilled chicken burger and gobbled it down) The Windlass was a nice place to enjoy company and relax.
Very different to the one other place we have visited on the Lake - this place is big, bright, modern and great views and food. Definitely better food and just a shame you can't book an outdoor table. Will be going back!
The food was excellent! The service was great. Our server was really friendly and prompt. We were there on a Thursday night and had no issues. Can't wait to come back.
Using OpenTable was nice and easy except that it did not give the option of choosing indoor or outdoor seating. Fortunately since our reservation time was early we were able to choose since it was not busy yet. The weather was perfect and we were given the best waterfront table in the corner by the boats. Our server was excellent and the food was pretty good. We had a great experience.
Cheesy Interior nautical decor with diner like tables and chairs. Very noisy inside dining room felt like a cafeteria. Drinks were super high priced . Food was decent. Steamers were good. I guess the real attraction here is the outside seating. Glad they resurrected this area institution but the only thing this new version shares with its predecessor is the name.
Great views, but way, way too noisy.
LOUD, LOUD, LOUD! This could be the most acoustically challenged restaurant I've ever encountered. Sadly, the echoing, hollow noise blocks out the many good things this place has to offer.
If you are looking to have conversation at the table, you must eat outside.
Food, decor and service were all good.
I truly don't want to give a bad review since the waitress was awesome and the manager was very apologetic. Unfortunately, I'd be lying. The AC was broken (brand new units), bread stale, butter fake, appetizers took 45 minutes to come out (and that was just one of the two). The oyster appetizer came out after the salads. I ordered seafood as entre which was good. My husband had veal...wasn't a fan. For the two of us with two cocktails the bill was over $130.00. Very over-priced for the atmosphere!!
Reservations are ONLY for indoors, which I found out after I arrived, expecting to enjoy a lovely outdoor sunset with my boyfriend for his BD. We opened the restaurant doors to be hit with the din of a college cafeteria. Beautiful room, but LOUD, oh so loud. Really did feel and sound like an upscale cafeteria. Sad to sit in here when it was such a gorgeous evening, but outdoor wait was 2 hours!! Shades down for sun glare, so no sunset for us :(
Staff was very pleasant and Larry was a great server, although way too busy. Food was not bad, although there were a lot of heavy dishes for a summer, waterfront restaurant, so entree choices were very limited for my taste. "Crabcake" was three large piles of mushy crab, no crust or sear - I only ate one and took home the other two only to find lots of shell in them. Should've gone with first choice of steamers, which someone enjoyed immensely at the next table. Windlass roll was yummy and BF enjoyed his seafood Fra Diavolo. Desserts are spectacular. We chose Fig Tart with gelato, both of which were delicious.
Excellent service and beautiful sunset view. The food was fine, but not memorable. To my taste, almost everything could have used more seasoning.
I was thrilled with this restaurant. It is beautiful with a spectacular view, and the service was excellent. The only improvement could be to the menu, though we didn't have entrees, which could mean that I'm missing something. Definitely recommend!!
This was my first time at the restaurant. The place it self is very nice, right on the water, newly renovated, outdoor dining. I was not impressed with the service. I made reservations for 7:45, arrived at 7:20 and was told I would get a text when a table was ready. After waiting outside on the dock till 8:00, I walked inside and saw that there was at least 10 empty tables with no one waiting. I walked up to the front desk and it was like talking to them for the first time, had no idea who I was. After being seated it took another 10 minutes for our waitress to visit our table for drinks. The food was good. I would like to try it again and hope it's a little quicker
Long wait but it was a busy Sunday
The restaurant was unique. I had trouble making a reservation for 4, which was surprising since we were seated at a table meant for 6 and many other tables were empty. The food was delicious, but the area for brunch was a little cramped. Fantastic views!
We went to the Windlass for the view on the water and were not disappointed. Although we had to wait over 30 minutes to be seated, we had drinks on their 'gliders' which are stationed right on the water. You have a beautiful view and are away from all the noise on the gliders and can catch up with friends or have a romantic pre-dinner drink. However, . the drinks are a bit pricey ... we paid $25 for 2 mixed drinks before tip. The outside dining is nothing special but the view is wonderful and so enjoyable to be outside. We didn't find the menu to be that spectacular and some of the entrées looked very expensive for this type of venue. But our vege-burgers and fries were great and at a bargain price. I have to say both the cocktail waitress and our dinner waitress were not very good at checking in. But we made the best of it. I had not been to the Windlass in years, and I could not believe how beautiful the renovations were inside! Absolutely gorgeous. I will come back to sit inside when the weather gets colder. On a scale of 1 - 10, I would give it a solid 7, and more for just the sheer beauty of watching the sun go down while you eat!!!
Prosciutto was not good grade along with a terrific plate of cheese nuts jam
Very generous portion lamb chops and good
Need table cloths to offset loud volume of noise. Ruins the mood
First time going there but loved everything about it. Will definitely go again & plan to take out of the area visitors there in the future.
The food was okay however, very small portions and very limited menu. The remodel is beautiful except for the diner style tables and chairs at a high end price range. It was very loud, service was fine however, fish selection was terrible and parking was non existent. Took over a half an hour to end up parking in someone's driveway because there was no parking available. The restaurant was not crowded, a lot of open tables. Would not recommend and will not be going back anytime soon. I do like there sister restaurant Alice's.
