We went there for a birthday celebration. It is a beautiful and historic setting. It was our son, daughter-in-law and grandkids’ first time there and we thought it would be special for them to have the tour and learn about the history of the house and the associated paranormal activity stories. We told the hostess, upon our arrival, that we would like to have the tour after dinner. Nobody told us that the tour hostess was going to leave at seven o’clock and at 6:45, when we showed up for the tour, we were told we were too late. The kids, and another group of diners, in the same situation, were bitterly disappointed.
My wife and I arrived separately, about a half hour early, and went to the third floor Ghost Bar for a cocktail. We ordered Black Russians, only to be told a few minutes later that there was no Kahlua in the house. Then, after ordering alternate drinks, someone showed up from downstairs with a cup of Kahlua, to make up the original order. I wondered if they had to borrow some from a neighbor...
As for dinner, the salad wedge was excellent, and reasonably priced. My wife and I, who have had Chateaubriand for two in many places and loved it, were disappointed, with the $49.00 pp meal. The filet was cooked beyond the doneness we had requested, the portions were small, and the accompanying vegetables were undercooked and sparse. The kids were 11 and 9. The ‘kids’ meals’ from the kid’s menu were overpriced at $25.00 each and were nothing special. The other two adults had no complaints. The server was competent, but not super friendly (granted some may prefer this). Desert in the second floor desert room was slow. Two of our group wanted bananas foster and were warned that it may take 25 minutes because there was only one staff member and one preparation cart and there was a large crowd in the next room. It took 35 minutes.
We have been to the Whitney twice before and were pleased with the experience. This time, we left with a bad taste in our mouths.
I went there for my two years anniversary with my partner, and we absolutely enjoyed it. Brilliant food, and ambience. The price was very reasonable, considering the quality of food that was being served. Fantastic ambience and the restaurant has amazing architecture too. There is nice music, mostly piano, but that does not interfere with any conversations.
I would definitely recommend, and I myself would love to check out other courses. I went for a Saturday night dinner.
We enjoyed our visit to The Whitney. Ambience is great, restaurant is classy and service is tremendous. I had the beef Wellington, which was cooked to perfection.
We patronized the bar, restaurant and desert room. All easily lived up to our expectation.
It was an exceptional meal!! one of the best I have ever had. Nothing but excellence!!
The wine soaked parmesan bread. Shut up
Absolutely awesome, Great setting, terrific ambience, excellent service, just perfect all the way around. Great tot see a Detroit gem thriving!!
The afternoon tea was a wonderful treat for all. Appreciate the brief introduction about tea and how to prepare at the start. The menu was enjoyed by all. We did not any extras to bring home. My only suggestion would be to have the tea pot on the table versus having to wait for the server to come by.
We dined at The Whitney on Saturday, 4/15/18, to celebrate a birthday. There were 4 of us in our group, and we had drinks at the bar before our reservation time.
We sat down, were greeted by our server, and we ordered a bottle of wine and additional cocktails. The wine took over 25 minutes to get to us, and was presented without any information or flourish at all, especially considering the ambiance of The Whitney.
We ordered our dinner at 8:30, and did not receive our food until 10:00 pm. We had multiple drinks while waiting, but were not offered any apology or appetizers or anything of the sort.
While the food was good, it was completely unacceptable that it took 1 1/2 hours to make a pork chop, 2 filets, and scallops.
The manager came over to our table about 5 minutes before we were finally served and told us that the pork chop was what was taking so long (which makes no sense because it doesn’t take 90 minutes to cook pork). He didn’t offer remorse, a complimentary drink, or anything of the like. We asked him to take a photo of us and seemed annoyed at this request.
We will not recommend this historic Detroit restaurant any longer, because with the rapidly growing Detroit restaurant scene, you can now find PLENTY of other options with far better menus and superior service.
The atmosphere of this restaurant is truly extraordinary. Prior to dining, we enjoyed the Whitney tour to learn more about the property history - highly recommend it. Excellent food and fantastic service. Shrimp cocktail was an amazing presentation (each so big they looked like mini lobsters). Dinner was definitely an experience and a night to remember!
What an incredible experience?! The food was amazing, the service, impeccable, and the ambiance was second to none! This was truly one of the most special dining experiences of my 49 years!
Piano music was far too loud, painfully so. Impossible to have a conversation.
Very expensive but the food is excellent and the ambiance is special.
We dined at The Whitney for our anniversary dinner. It was an outstanding experience. The food was delicious and prepared artfully. Our waiter was very attentive and informative. He made us feel completely comfortable and gave us information to enjoy our time and food completely. The mansion itself is beautiful and breathtaking. The atmosphere is romantic and fun at the same time. We visited the Ghost Bar for a drink, before our reservations, and then had dinner. Unfortunately the dessert parlor was full, so we did not go there for dessert but we did have dessert served to our table and that was wonderful as well. At the end, we took a tour of the house and we really enjoyed learning about the history.
I went for afternoon tea with 2 friends. I mentioned in reservation 1 person was vegetarian. I called 2 days before to confirm reservation and mentioned again 1 person was vegetarian. I was told this was no problem. We showed up, and the vegetarian was served a slice of cucumber and a slice of red pepper with shaved carrot on top in place of the mini beef Wellington and salmon sandwich the other questions received. It did not look appealing or filling, and it was very disappointing for the price of the tea. The building is beautiful and service is nice, but that is a wretched way to treat guests at your establishment.
We enjoyed our first dinner at the Whitney before a whiskey tasting at Eastern Market. It's an amazing mansion and we heard the history behind the venue. Both main courses were delicious. Music was great. Because we had an event afterwards we didn't get a chance to explore the 2nd/3rd floors with the bar or dessert, but will definitely go back again.
Overall atmosphere of the mansion is incredible but disappointed at the food and service for the price.
Service by Donte was excellent as well as our meals. Beautiful venue for lunch or dinner.
My husband and I had a wonderful experience dining before seeing a performance at The Fox! Bradley was our server and was excellent! Thank you for a fabulous evening! Will be back soon! Kudos to Bradley!
Love this place. Highly recommend and make sure you have a drink at the ghost bar on the 3rd floor.
My wife and I have been coming to the Whitney for the last four years after I proposed to her there. The staff made it a very memorable occasion. I would highly recommend it to all my friends and family.
Love the Whitney and had it not been for a long wait for our dessert and no one checking in on us on the 2nd floor, I would have given 5 stars across the board.
We had an absolute wonderful experience. The food was great! The wait staff was funny and attentive. We will be back!! :)
Such a beautiful venue! The service and food were excellent! We enjoyed the anniversary touch of complimentary champagne! After dinner we took a very interesting tour of the mansion. Our tour guide was delightful and dismantled many myths that surround the mansion’s history.
The staff made my moms 60th birthday an unforgettable experience
We had a great family experience that lasted three hours over the three floors. The food was delicious and ambience was great with the live music (piano). Dessert is on its own floor and is an experience of its own. The bar upstairs was cool and the atmosphere different than anywhere else around. I would recommend coming here for an unforgettable time.
The food was excellent. The ambiance was superb. The service could have been better. I know the waiter was new but I expected better especially for the Whitney.
We had a great time, the food was very good, the service was excellent. It was a little pricey for Easter brunch. We had fun and would go back maybe during the week they have three course early dinner specials for $39.
The Easter brunch was a home run. The food and service were both outstanding!
Excellent!! 1 of the best restaurants I've been to world wide.
Excellent place to take your wife for her birthday
A true gem in our great city...The ambiance, food, service, tour, were perfect. Lakeitha was a joy. Lots of great conversation about the place and it's history. She was awesome!!
We went for a small baby shower, 7 people. They gave us a privately room and put the mother-to-be’s name on top of our menu. Delicious food, classy fine dining.
Absolutely wonderful experience. My boyfriend proposed and the server was so excited to help him, it was truly a magical night.
I received a gift certificate from my team members for my birthday. The atmosphere was wonderful, as well as the service and food. I would recommend for any occasion.
Great food. Service was very nice - waitress was very friendly. The tour at the end was fantastic - we were able to have a one on one explanation of the mansion. Highly recommend this to anyone.
We were looking much forward on Good Friday to the food at The Whitney on a spontaneous night out. However, I was a little surprised when making the reservation that we were able to find a table for two without problems (all times were still available) - doubts came up that the experience might not be as good as we were expecting (where in the world can you make a reservation in a top restaurant with such short notice on a Friday).
The Calamari were certainly good, as was the Asparagus Creme Soup from the duet starter - the Salad was not the freshest and the dressing too sweet for my taste. My Beef Wellington was superb, while my wife's Towering Tofu with Portobello was so so (too sour). The additionally ordered Cauliflower Steak from the spring menu (my wife was split whether to order the cauliflower or the Tofu tower, so I ordered both) did also not meet our expectations (too dry), despite some surprising personal touches from the chef to the dishes.
The wait staff was very professional and attentive. The ambiance in a old wood baron mansion can not be beaten.
To be be in line with similar food temples in cities like Chicago, more attention to the food has to be made.
Super impressed with this place on every level. From the welcoming staff and delicious food to the awe-inspiring surroundings. Highly recommend the Beef Wellington and the key lime cheesecake.
This restaurant is a hidden gem. We had drinks first in the Ghost Bar during Happy Hour (Half off). They are the same drinks after HH. Many restaurants dilute HH drinks. Then had a wonderful steak and lobster dinner for my husbands birthday. They even had his name printed on the menu. Then we hopped
On the Q Line to go to the Pistons game at LSA. Left our car there and retuned after the game. This is a wonderful restaurant.
We were celebrating two birthdays that night and had a wonderful meal on the first floor and went to the dessert room on the second. Everything was outstanding. We had steaks and children to the Whitney on each of their 21st birthdays. A great place to celebrate.
Excellent experience and all request made, were delivered, even the menu had Happy birthday on it. Now that's 5star service.
