The Whitney
Our visit started off with a tour given by Jim. That was an outstanding experience and Jim really knew his history. The food was awesome and my only complaint is regarding our server Keith. We went quite a bit of time with empty wine and water glasses. This really put a sour note on what was an amazing evening otherwise.
Great , loved everything
Keith’s service was fantastic and the food was delicious!!
I have been to the Whitney several times, but never for their brunch!! And, my goodness was it worth it. Excellent service, excellent food. We were all expecting portions on the smaller side, and were surprised at how big each of the three courses were. The eggs Nantucket were delicious. The crab cakes were filled with wonderful crab and cooked perfect. You can’t go wrong with any of the dessert options. Each person in my party ordered something different and we all sampled one another’s!! Yum!
Food was delicious and staff was very helpful!
Enjoyable atmosphere, piano in the background, dim and fitting lighting for the setting.
Romantic, beautiful and amazing. And the staff was amazing too! I already want to go back!
First time here and it was great!! Food was amazing. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu. Loved the atmosphere, very romantic. It was a perfect valentines day dinner!
This was our first visit. The food was top notch and perfectly prepared. The only reason for a 4-star instead of 5 is the inconsistency of the drinks. Same drink, very different from the ghost bar and the dining room. We will definitely return.
Marisa was super attentive and enhanced our experience.
It would have been a better dining experience if the piano wasn't so loud. It was difficult hearing each other.
Valentines Day
1st time there and we had a wonderful time. The food was incredible. The staff was friendly and very helpful. We will definitely be back - probably for brunch on a Sunday.
Service was delightful. Ambience is some of the best I’ve been at... what a cool place. Free tour. Awesome separate bar area upstairs with different sitting areas. Amazing beef Wellington and calamari... best I ever had. First class experience all around. Was a great Valentine’s Day. Thanks!
A beautiful, must try restaurant- But. We had an excellent waiter and lovely dinner downstairs. But, it was so cold in the dining room we had to ask for our coats back and put them on. It was so cold in the restrooms you could store meat in them. Two managers abruptly interrupted us to ask how things were. Two. No courtesy or tact in the interruptions. Then upstairs for dessert it all went South. No silverware or napkins, absentee waiter, coffee issues, tortoise like service. Great desserts, but the poor service stood out. How many times can you say I'll get that right away or I'll be right back and then ignore the table? He sure had a system.
This was an exceptional fine dining experience! The service was seamless, from the hostess to our server. The pianist was delightful and talented, and our food was perfect! Will be back for my next special occasion!
Wonderful food and service - fantastic/ historic venue facing Woodward avenue - a little pricey but an above level experience that is worth it for a special occasion.
This was my first visit to The Whitney. As one of the city’s renowned landmarks, I should have taken cues from the relative mum about the dining experience here. Unfortunately, the food was underwhelming, some of dishes being served cold and lukewarm. For its reputation and price points, I expected to be dazzled. I had the filet mignon (because NY Strip was not offered). It was prepared well (medium rare) and was very flavorful, though not as hot as I prefer. The green vegetable selection was limited. There weren’t a lot of patrons during the time we were there so I don’t understand why we couldn’t get fresh, hot from the grill food. The ambiance was very intimate and dimly lit, more suited for couples than a group dinner. We had a stellar, attentive server. The bathrooms are outdated. Definitely needs some improvement before I can recommend with high praise.
Delightful brunch before DSO concert. Brunch menu was extensive for all tastes.
Our experience was fantastic! From the time we drove in, until the time we left, everything went how a “date night” should go. Our server, Ron, was knowledgeable and his service was over the top! We’ll be back and will bring a group to share another great experience.
Ghost Bar service was awful. Took 30 minutes to get 4 drinks.
Our server at The Whitney was great. The food came out very slowly. It was an odd night compared to what we are used to at both places. Will give it another try based on past experiences.
Fantastic food, albeit on the small side for the price but your also paying for the ambiance and great service. Family loved it, even the kids menu was great. They included a free birthday desert for my wife and daughter. Have always enjoyed our time at The Whitney!
Everything was great for a surprise birthday. The small touches were greatly appreciated!
This place was great. Brought my wife for 40th birthday. They gave her the menu wrapped in a bow and her dessert was awesome. Was given a history lesson of the building and the whitney family.
It was a thoroughly fabulous experience!
Everything was excellent but they need to invest in new dining chairs as they were in extremely bad shape and uncomfortable
The mansion is beautiful, the food is amazing and the staff was excellent!!
Food highly overrated and expensive not the best in taste.
2 birthdays. Made both feel special with Birthday menus and deserts. The tour after dinner was fantastic.
This was a awesome experience!!!! The food was excellent!!!! Will be returning.....Beautiful!!!
Auto show preview awesome
Step back in time through the front doors of a beautiful late 19th century logging baron's mansion come upscale but not pretentious restaurant that serves a hearty brunch menu to the sounds of a musician playing a grand piano in the lobby. The décor is warm and the service is professional and gracious. My family decided that we will all order different items so that we can share and compare. No one was disappointed. If you are anywhere near the mid-town Detroit area, do yourself a favor and make reservations.
What a fabulous restaurant. We had the Chateaubriand for two. The portions are very generous. The presentation was amusing, served table side. Our meat was perfection.
My wife and I enjoyed her birthday dinner at the Whitney. We could not have been more impressed with the service, the food, the wine list and the atmosphere. The live music was phenomenal. The sommelier on site was incredible and graciously gave us an impromptu tour of the building, which made the evening that much more special. We will absolutely consider returning for any special occasion. Could not be happier with our experience.
Excellent service and great food. The ambiance in this old mansion is wonderful. Friendly, courteous service all the way from the valet attendant to the mattress d’ to our waitress. Couldn’t be better. We highly recommend it. Make sure that you check out the cozy bar on the 3rd floor.
The food was good but the service was subpar. The restaurant was nearly empty (on a Tuesday night), and the room we were in had only one other table. Despite that, we waited quite a long time for our waitress to greet us and take a drink order, and then another long time for the drinks to actually arrive. We received our drinks approximately 25 minutes after arriving. We were never asked whether we wanted additional drinks, and the waitress barely acknowledged us other then when taking our order or delivering our food. The emptiness definitely made the gorgeous restaurant feel a bit sad, and the inattentive waitress didn't help. We felt a bit like the forgotten cousins in the back room. Disappointing.
great service and ambience. had the birthday special 12oz. prime rib. Asked for end cut didn't get it. What I got was a bit dry. Wife had pork chop excellent. Drinks very good. The Detroit Hummer drink made up for so so prime rib. Complimentary desert was nice.
Beautiful ambience for Sunday brunch. Good value for a 3 course brunch and great blueberry scones. My sparking wine was served too warm for my taste though and server could have refilled all of the tables drinks faster throughout the whole service. Lovely location and good tasting food, would come back for the ambience.
I read the reviews before making reservations for our party of six and the reviews did scare me a little. Most people complained about waiting (on everything or cost especially for drinks). However, the time of year and also time of seating is why I did select the Whitney, since it was after the Holidays. Everything and everyone was extremely comfortable, friendly, patient (with our group of 6 asking questions) about the food, wine and the mansion, etc. Our server was Paul, he did a get job even described ever detail of each entree and knew the wine list well described how each wine should taste with the meal we chose. Nothing was rushed nor did we feel rushed. My husband and I had not been to the Whitney before however (our friends) both of the other couples had and one couple said they went many years ago for a work Christmas dinner and the other for their anniversary a few years ago and both couples said this time was better by far. We meet two gentleman named Jim that both worked there. The 1st Jim also went by Coach, we just started asking him questions as we were walking around with our drinks, we could have talked and listened for hours butbut it was reservation time. He told us to come up stairs after dinner for free tour and we did and thats when we meet Jim the Tour Guide. It just happened to be Jim and the 6 of us which was really nice. It was a great night for all of us!
Nice place to experience esp when you read up the history behind it. Food was so so. Missing some items on the dish that was supposed to come with. When asked waiter just brought the missing items out. No apology. Coffee was not hot.
