I took my girlfriend there for her bachelorette party and we had such an amazing time!! I will be returning!! Great food, great service and such a beautiful place!!!
My father was in town and we chose the Whitney to celebrate his 75th birthday. Along was his wife and my wife and son. Neither my father nor I have there since 1991. The food and ambiance met expectations in every way. What stood out, though, were two pretty major deficiencies in the service. By policy they allow outside wine with a corkage fee, which is fine. I brought in a 2010 Caymus Special Selection Cab and a 2012 Nickel and Nickel Chardonnay. I asked the wait-person open both bottles and to please decant the Caymus. She promptly took the Caymus and marched into the kitchen. She came back with what I assumed to be my wine in a decanter. No bottle. No cork. No chance for a ceremonial taste. In my opinion, this was a gross breach of wine serving etiquette 101 and got us off on the wrong foot.
From there the service was merely adequate until we were invited to go to the third floor dessert room for bananas foster. Unbeknownst to us, the Whitney closes at 8pm on Sunday nights and the folks in the dessert room were clearly closing up shop at 7:50. We remarked that the staff downstairs suggested we come up for dessert and that we were looking forward to bananas foster. The comment back was something to the effect of..."we were about to leave, but I guess we could do it." Wow, thanks for the favor! Prior to the downstairs staff suggesting we go up for dessert, we were not even aware of the existence of this dessert room. Perhaps this is a pet peeve of mine, but the process of trying to close while still in theory serving diners is very off-putting. At a place like The Whitney, it should never happen. It's a back of house processes that no diner should ever see. We persevered and the bananas foster was spectacular.
So while I am ticking the Yes box for recommend to a friend, I am only doing so because anyone is entitled to a bad day and a singular experience may not accurately reflect reality. That said, up your game Whitney, many great places to eat in the D.
We went to celebrate a friend's birthday. I told them ahead of time and they made a personalized menu just for her and brought her a special dessert. The staff was amazing. The food was delicious, don't miss out on dessert. Each one was better then the next. The rooms were all beautiful and the garden was in full bloom. They have built up Woodward so nicely. It was a great morning out.
This wasn’t the Whitney I remember...fine dining service experience replaced by a friendly but not terribly professional server, my steak came medium well when it should have been medium rare. Took forever to get a new steak, at which point it was not quite rare. They took it back and put it back on to cook some more and took it off the bill - but at that point everyone else was done with their meal and I rushed to finish my steak so everyone else wouldn’t be held up. It just wasn’t special or memorable and we likely won’t return in spite of the fact that we had our wedding dinner there 16 years ago.
The Whitney made for a very nice anniversary dinner for me and my wife.
The staff was friendly and helpful, the setting was romantic, and the food was delicious.
Highly recommended if you have a special event or a special someone.
Wonderful experience. I would highly recommend a visit to the Whitney. We went for brunch and the food was delicious and the service was fantastic.
Went to the Whitney with a good friend and had a superb meal. However, this place is more of a "romantic" venue, with dim lighting and stunning decor.
The Whitney House is truly amazing. It is a great experience to be able to dine in such a beautifully restored landmark. The staff is engaging and focused on making the experience memorable. The Coconut Tomato soup and the Wedge Salad were great. However the entrees fell flat.
The Twin Lobster Tails were raw in the middle and the Beef Wellington was overdone and lacked any sign of foie gras.
A real disappointment as the accompaniments were well prepared. There was a miscommunication on the side potatoes and they arrived when the meal was 3/4 finished. Our server offered to redo but that just doesn’t work.
Free dessert was offered but by the mood was broken.
We were not there for practice. A weak link between the kitchen and the table. I hope the can fix it.
My wife recently had surgery and needed to use the elevator which was out of service. Was asked to pay a $5 cover charge to get in the 3rd floor bar prior to getting seated. Positive note... meal was outstanding, server provided fantastic service.
The place is very beautiful but the food and service are not outstanding. Food has a good quality, but for the price they charge I was really not impressed.
Excellent food great service great staff
Music in the garden was fabulous. Highly recommend
Excellent food and amazing service. The staff is so kind and we loved our meals. Great way to celebrate a birthday!!
Great setting for a restaurant. Unfortunately, the food was nothing special. It wasn't bad, but for the price and atmosphere, we were expecting more. I would not recommend to a friend for dinner. If I went back, I would just go for a drink and maybe appetizers in the 3rd floor Ghost Bar. Please note that the elevator is currently not in service. I would recommend having a drink and checking the mansion out.
My husband and I celebrated his birthday and it was an outstanding experience. The food was delicious and the service was great.
My server really took my 30th birthday experience to the next level! I will DEFINITELY be back!
We are never disappointed in our experience at the Whitney. Always great food, great service and a beautiful venue.
Great place for a special occasion. Also good for conversation, very quiet. Side dishes very generous size. Food very tasty and unique.
Always delicious and always special
Outstanding experience. Food and service was exceptional. Cant wait to go back
The brunch was good overall. The restaurant was nice. The main courses were tasty. Service was good. The chairs were uncomfortable and looked worn. The desserts were sub-par.
The food, service, and ambience were all first class! I ordered the pork chop, and it was amazing! Celebrated my wife’s birthday in style...
Had not been to the Whitney in about 25 years.....the service and food was excellent then and continues to be that today.....well done well done Whitney!!!
The building is still pretty. The view from our table which overlooked to the garden was nice. Tea selection was poor. The only selection offered were a herbal drink and a fairly nice Earl Grey. Herbal drink is not a tea for tea drinker. The scones were a bit too sweet. Sandwiches were nice, especially the tiny Wellington's. The desserts were uninspiring.
Amazing. Great food and service
This was a fantastic place - the staff were exceptionally friendly and competent. The food was also excellent and we would gladly go again when we are in town next. Highly recommend all, including the tour of the mansion after your dinner!
Once in a lifetime experience! Treat for all the senses.
Delicious drinks! Food was of good quality. Service was excellent!!
An excellent environment with excellent food and our server, Lisa, was beyond wonderful. The mansion is a true joy.
Everything was excellent. The piano player even played Happy Birthday for me. Eddie our waiter went above and beyond. He truly made my birthday a great one.
Great atmosphere and food! Definitely take the tour!
We celebrated my daughter’s birthday. The food, ambiance, and service were very excellent. We will be returning!
Great experience. Incredibly expensive, but you get what you pay for, right? Our server was wonderful, very professional. My wife had wonderful time on her birthday. Will come back.
From the first steps up to the front door you are greeted with smiles and enthusiasm by all staff. They knew it was my birthday and hasd a special menu with Birywishes on it for me when we arrived. The host was cherry and we were checked on by numerous staff and manager or owner to am unsure but he was humble and welcoming. Our waiter was amazing, it was his second day and he was so attentive and friendly, he offered great suggestions and explained anything we needed. As for high end restaurants we felt so welcomed and the food was delicious! They made my 40th birthday dinner spectacular
Our waiter was way too familiar for a fine dining anniversary celebration. He rested things on the table, reached across me to point at my food, teased my husband that he counted on his fingers how many years we had been married. My husband did not. He even told another anniversary table across the room how many years we had been married and that my husband had to count on his fingers. Again, my husband did not. It was creepy and awkward.
Joel the pianist was absolutely incredible, as always.
Women bathroom smelled. Beef was over cooked. Service was great. Piano player was great
The Whitney is one of my favorite restaurants downtown Detroit, my husband took me there for my birthday and it was exceptional. It was our first time in the Woodward Room, the ambiance was inviting and peaceful and overall did not disappoint. Highly recommend for anyone!
We gathered for a family reunion brunch and were very pleased with the excellent service and of course food! We are planning our next get together as we enjoy the Whitney very much.
Not like what we e had in the past. The food was not great. We were looking forward to the crab legs that we had before and they aren’t in the menu anymore. The steak and lobster were less than desired.
Had a nice dinner, food was excellent as was the service. Only negative was after dinner we went to enjoy an after dinner drink in the Ghost Bar and there were several young girls Dressed in very short cut off jean shorts. And a few guys in tee shirts and ball caps .
One order was not put in so 1 person had to wait until their meal was cooked- we were about finished eating when hers came. Steak was medium to well instead of medium rare.
