About The Wharf

History has been written inside the walls of the Wharf, with its 1790's style architecture featuring original wood columns and beams that are charred black from a Civil War fire. Since 1971, satisfied diners have been heading to The Wharf in Old Town for whole Maine lobster, local soft shell crabs and prime steaks. The restaurant has recently been renovated and remodeled and the menu updated to include many contemporary seafood items along with their traditional Chesapeake Bay creations.

Superb seafood in the heart of Old Town Alexandria. Great crab cakes, excellent service and good value for money. A historic property with a tradition of fine food and good service.

Very good food. Ambiance is lovely. Service brings the entire experience downwards. Rough around the edges and rushed service does nothing for the experience. Either Short wait staff - or the waiter could not keep up with his tables. We had several management come to the table several times looking for a lost wallet without even saying “excuse us “. Our food was either rushed or when our plates were empty they were left on the table for a long time. It was unfortunate that such a lovely historic atmosphere felt like an everyday luncheonette because of the service.

Our family of six all ordered something different. The calamari appetizer, crab bisque, and wedge salad were delicious as well as the salmon, lobster and scallop au grautin, grilled seafood platter and lobster linguini pasta entrees. After reading some of the reviews, we were a little apprehensive, but we did not find one thing to complain about. It was great food and service!

We went on Thanksgiving but I did not want the traditional "turkey " meal. I had even looked at the menu on line and knew just what I wanted to order. Seafood/oysters/shrimp, etc.

When we sat down, much, much to my disappointment, we were offered only three entrees. (crab cakes for $58, turkey for $50 and beef for $65). The meal came with soup (your choice of two soups), salad (choice from two salads,) the entree (choice of crab, turkey, beef) and three desserts...way too much food!

I ate half of my salad, declined the soup, had the crab cakes (took one home) and picked at the desert. I think when I made the reservation I should have been told of this change of menu. (They contacted me FOUR times to ensure I was coming, so they did have a chance to pass that information along.) With one cocktail, and a glass of wine with dinner my bill was $98 (they included an 18% gratuity tax)
Sadly I do not think it was worth almost $100!.

We had Thanksgiving dinner at the Wharf and it was spectacular. Even with a party of 17, the service couldn’t have been better, the food prepared to perfection, and the atmosphere festive. I will certainly go back.

We went to enjoy a seafood dish that we have had on other trip to the Wharf. It is called the Triple Norfolk and in the past it was ample amounts of lobster crab and shrimp with drawn butter. Not any more Instead we were served a bread bowl with mashed potatoes a few shrimp and almost no lobster or crab. When we complained we were told that there is new management and that they kept the name of the entree but not the recipe and that others have registered the same complaint. It will be our last trip there.

The Wharf has a nice location on King Street in Old Town and has outdoor tables which are lovely in season. However the food is mediocre and extremely over-priced. We were very disappointed.

We felt like we were getting the bums rush. Thought it was going to be a fine dining experience but it wasn't. It was more like diner level service and experience. We were seated and everything was rushed. Bread came out fast before we ordered or even had a glass of water! Then the salad was thrown in front of us and before we had even finished the salad, the entree flew out and was thrown down in front of us.
The food was good but the presentation was all too rushed and cheapened the whole experience. We've eaten in diners before and this was completely remisent of that experience.
They need to slow it down and let the patrons enjoy the experience of each course.

Positives:
Server and staff provided ice water and bread immediately after being seated.

The lighting and atmosphere were nice.

Staff was never far from tables if something was needed.

The house wine was pretty good.

Negatives:

Waitress took our order and ended up coming back twice to confirm if it was correct.....

I ordered the New England Clam Chowder for an app. I lived in Boston for 16 months, I know decent chowder. This was like a white soup. Ick.

My girlfriend's pasta had a blackened end that looked like it was singed before/during cooking. She said it made her dish taste smokey.

My dish was a fried platter. It was soggy...the fries, the fried shrimp the fried fish everything. Soggy. They were happy to charge me $30 for it though.

Wont be going back, for the price, you can do WAY better for the area. Try someplace else.

As a long time patron of the Wharf, we were very disappointed with our experience last night. It’s almost as if it were a different restaurant, perhaps under new management. The menu has changed, reducing options and not for the better. Although primarily a seafood restaurant, they cut down options for steak to 1 fillet. They no longer have fried shrimp as a separate choice on the menu and eliminated baked potatoes. I know these are small examples but the overall experience seemed like we were putting them out by asking.

The bread we received looked like someone else’s leftovers. My wife asked for cocktail sauce for the shrimp add-on and it took until the end of the meal to receive it. And it should have been on the plate (previously included) to begin with. The drinks we ordered came well after the salads and we had to ask twice.

The restaurant was busy which accounted for some of the delays but when you pay good money for a dinner experience, you expect a good experience. Not once did the waiter apologize for being busy.

They don't hire enough staff. The waiter was pleasant, but running every single minute. Our drinks came after we finished appetizers, and a 2nd beer never showed up. The food is ok, but this place has a very "tourist" feel to it. The service makes it a no-go, though.

They got us! The portions were very small for what we paid for...5 shrimp for $25, a platter fried seafood, consisting of 1 fillet of fish, 3 shrimp, 4-5 under cooked scallops, a few oysters which didn't taste great and 1 shrimp ball. The mashed potatoes were extremely bland and for the almost $30 they charged, they had the nerve to add a $2 up-charge to sub flounder for catfish. This was a hugely disappointing dining experience; I brought my whole family out for this and was so embarrassed and disappointed when the food came out and we all saw the portions. I will take a hole in the wall seafood establishment over this place any day. I will say they seasoned the fish pretty well and the fries were tasty and it was in a nice spot of Old Town--that is probably the best thing about this place. Would not go back there and would not recommend the over priced small portioned, somewhat okay food establishment.

We felt a bit rushed dining at the Wharf. Our entrees were brought before we finished our appetizer. Checks were brought before everyone finished dinner.

Beignet appetizer was very good, as were the crab cakes. The trout lacked in flavor and the potatoes taste more like sweet potatoes than roasted potatoes. Our waiter couldn't tell us how the potatoes were prepared.

Haven't been here in over a year and never going back. Waiter was great food was terrible. Crab cakes were dry, shrimp was over cooked and food was not worth the money or the drive there. Was very disappointed at the quality of the food. The crab cakes here used to be my favorite...not anymore. Sorry but i should have known something was wrong when a restaurant has no wait and lots of availability in a hot spot like old town on a Saturday night. So sad.
