About The Wharf
History has been written inside the walls of the Wharf, with its 1790's style architecture featuring original wood columns and beams that are charred black from a Civil War fire. Since 1971, satisfied diners have been heading to The Wharf in Old Town for whole Maine lobster, local soft shell crabs and prime steaks. The restaurant has recently been renovated and remodeled and the menu updated to include many contemporary seafood items along with their traditional Chesapeake Bay creations.

The Wharf Ratings and Reviews
All four diners gave two thumbs up on the dishes we ordered: Chesapeake Bay rockfish (2x), yellow fin tuna, and crab cakes. We were seated by the bar on Friday night, the locals were boisterous, but obviously it’s “their” place to hang out on a Friday night, so a bit noisy. Three before dinner cocktails, bottle of wine, 4 entrees, was $50 per person, so average score on value for money.
Our waiter was very friendly, informative and attentive. The food was enjoyed by all 4 in our party. The stuffed flounder was very good as was the salmon and the portions were just right. The warm bourbon pecan pie with ice cream on top was delicious although not 'warm' as advertised. It was too good to send back to ask that they warm it. Could not let it leave the table because it was so good. (smile)
Fantastic experience. They accommodated a group of 9 family members arriving separately from Philly, Brooklyn, and Manhattan, aged 6mos to a 92 yo w a walker, for my sister's 60th birthday. All staff were patient and pleasant, especially our server. And the food was superb. Lots of choices. I highly recommend the ahi tuna, crab cakes (no fillers) and coconut pie! Go! Find out for yourself.
Our server, Andea (?) was awesome. Delightful and very accommodating of food allergy questions. Food was excellent - the she-crab soup remains one of Old Town’s signature appetizers. Monkfish risotto, tripe Norfolk, crusted salmon, all excellent. We’ve been coming here for years and it remains our go-to when guests want seafood. We took a guest from overseas and she said it was the best seafood she has had in the US.
Our 2 couples really enjoyed the warm atmosphere and cozy ambience of The Wharf on a cold early February evening. We've been to this restaurant several times in the past and it is on our 'regulars' list but for the first time we were seated upstairs where the atmosphere and views of King Street, with the lighted street trees sparkling outside the windows and we enjoyed what is obviously an updated scene up there. The food is always good, whether a seafood specialty or the filets, and this evening was another notch in a well adorned belt. The shrimp and linguini are an especially wonderful dish. Just right!
Of course, we'll be back!
A wonderful experience at The Wharf! I've been wanting to try this restaurant for several years and I was finally able to visit this past weekend for a birthday lunch. Wow! Old world charm and historic interior. Staff was very courteous and professional and welcoming! Our server, Julianna was excellent! I wish we had servers like her where I live and work! Great food, outstanding menu and selections. I will definitely be back! They do a very nice gesture for a birthday at the end of the meal. Pricey, but worth the visit!
I have been to the Wharf before. The food is always pretty good, especially if you enjoy seafood. The service, however, I have always had one issue with or another. This time, the waitress just had a bad mood, and seemingly a bad attitude from the beginning of the meal. Not very accommodating to substitutions. Did not know how to properly hand a plate to someone.
The restaurant was quite crowded (Saturday night, restaurant week so no surprise). The noise level was considerably higher than on previous visits, which made conversation difficult. Food was great - as usual- but crowding interfered with table service. Next time we will opt for mid-week.
Love this spot for she crab soup. My rockfish was great and my friend loved her clam chowder (hearty!) fried shrimp and peppermint creme brûlée. I ordered the tiramisu it wasn’t as wonderful. The Service was top notch and ambiance was perfect for conversation and catching up. Will keep coming back.
We have been to the Wharf for lunch several times and enjoyed each lunch. So, we thought why not go to the Wharf for New Year's Eve dinner. We got our table at our reservation time and ordered drinks. We then ordered one appetizer to share, but the appetizer came out within 5 minutes, which seemed really fast, especially since the restaurant was filled to capacity. The appetizer was just okay. Our entrees showed up 10 minutes later -- way too fast for us to enjoy our night out. Our entrees, lobster linguini, was just okay. This dish did not pop at all. The other entree, a lobster-crab dish, was also just okay, in fact a bit bland with cold veggies. We expected more based on our earlier luncheon experiences and the $30+ price for our entrees. Our reservation was at 9:00 and we were done eating by 9:40! Neither of us enjoyed our night out, what a disappointment. The service was fine, but I got the strong impression that they just wanted to turn the table as fast as possible. Our waiter brought our check and came back so soon that I had to tell him that I hadn't even looked at the bill yet!
As a non-seafood eating person, normally, I would not go to this type of restaurant, but my girlfriend likes seafood, and I wanted to take her to a nice restaurant, so off we went.
We had a great time. Since we were early for our reservation, we went to the bar, first. The bartender was very knowledgeable. My girlfriend asked for a Nuts and Berries (which I have never heard of before). The bartender had no problem making the drink.
When we got to our table, the staff was very attentive. The manager came over during and after our meal to make sure everything was okay. I like it when managers come over AFTER a meal because that's the time when they would be needed the most if there was a problem. As we were chatting, he told us about their Sunday brunch, which sounded yummy.
I ordered the Grilled Filet Mignon. It was pretty good. My girlfriend started with Southern-Fried Calamari. She said it was very good. For her main course, she ordered Linguini Portofino, which comes with shrimp, scallops, mussels, clams, calamari and crab meat sautéed in a garlic-herb white wine broth with fresh tomato. She said it was excellent; that she could tell the pasta was very fresh. She also pointed out the the scallops were real because they were all irregular in shape. Here is the primer on scallops that she gave me: Since scallops are an animal, each individual scallop is not shaped exactly the same—they are slightly different in size, and won't be perfect cylinders. Fake (or cheap) scallops, however, will look identical to each other as they were made using something like a round cookie cutter.
All in all, I would highly recommend The Wharf. We are looking forward to coming back for Sunday brunch.
The restaurant must have gotten a new chef since we went last b/c the food is different. It was good before, but now it seems 'classier' or more refined than it used to be. We love coming here, but the service was a little slow and the bathrooms were out of order and a huge mess.
Seated 15 mins after our reservation time. Had a drink at the bar while waiting. Bartender complained that he didn’t have any change and gave me $13 back from a $20. I later saw on the menu the beer was $6.50 and immediately regretted leaving him a $2 tip. Who does that?
Stuffed salmon was ok, but not worth $30.
There is a $7 kid’s menu with tiny burgers, fried fish (ok), chicken tenders and pasta.
Overall, kind of a let down.
We went for Christmas Eve dinner and were satisfied with our meals and the service was very good. We didn't feel rushed as in past years. It did seem to be an abbreviated menu and our favorite dish, cioppino, was no longer offered as a meal though you could order it as an appetizer. We will probably go back next year as this has become a family tradition.
I've been coming to the Wharf for years now, been here for almost every special occasion, but this time disappointed and most likely not return. They had a special offer emailed to me but the waiter had no idea about it, one of my favorite dishes is no longer on the dinner menu but on the appetizer menu, but the waiter didn't seem to give a suggestion that they can make this a dinner. Our two entrees looked like some child put food on the plate, and not even good quantity. It's like they've run out of food. We didn't complain, just left, used the special offer after the manager approved. Not coming back. I miss the old Wharf
