The Westside Local Ratings and Reviews
Went with family after event at the Music Hall. Artsy decor, reclaimed old building. Fun mature atmosphere. Menu had many items that sounded good and different so we all had hard time choosing. Apps: pint of fries was very good even if you don’t normally like fries, and green dirt crostini trio sounded good but was just ok, wouldn’t get it again but there are many others to choose from. Dinner: summit burger very good, west side Mac and cheese very good, chicken saltimbocca very good, and I had the seasonal quinoa which was just ok. My wife tried it though and she thought it was very good so I maybe trust her more than me. All portions were moderate to large and we had no room for dessert so I cannot tell you if those are good or not.
Family, and I, liked the place and plan to return again for dinner. I recommend making reservations as it is popular place. Also parking is on the street or in a small lot across from the restaurant. They have outside seating as well that was covered and had space heaters, looked nice but we were seated inside.
Chosen for Saturday lunch with the wife.
Deviled eggs weren't anything we couldn't make at home with minimal effort.
Crostini Trio was very good with a nice combination of flavors. One of them had prosciutto that was a little thick and quite chewy. Prefer thinner and melty...
Jalapeno and Jam Burger was above average and cooked right (medium) but honestly it was just another burger. I almost hate to say it like that because it wasn't "bad" but the description sure makes you think you're getting a doozy of a combination.
The Hatfield Dunkel Brisket sandwich was good, moist, flavorful and all at the same time a little pedestrian. It needs a little seasoning or more bite somewhere in it. The pretzel bun is good but overwhelms the brisket flavor in my opinion.
Service was pretty good and unobtrusive, which I appreciate. Never had an empty drink without a replacement already on the table. Our waitress was training and we couldn't hear her very well because of the crowd noise but overall good marks.
Bottom line: I think we expected to really be "wow'd" and in the end it was just an expensive lunch. Menu had good variety and love the farm to table approach. It seems like when we spend $60 on a 2 sandwich + appetizers lunch we should've walked away with complete satisfaction, but we both said it was "good but not great".
Great great food!! Fresh art. Had to flag down other servers so get attention from our server (who’s mental acuity left much to be desired). All the servers dressed like they either just came from a dungeon or from little house on the prairie. Other than the service- wonderful food, cozy spot!
No matter how early reservations are made, we always get tables right by the entrance. This past visit was the worst. We had a table where cold draft hits every time the door gets open (which was quite often). We had to beg a staff to close the curtains but it didn’t help much. Our waitress went missing after bringing our food, never came back to ask for the 2nd drink. (We had to catch her to ask for the check long after we were done eating). My husband ordered Mac&cheese with brisket and Brussel sprouts, but we found no sprouts in his dish. I love this place, but based on the service we received, I feel very discouraged to return anytime soon.
This is one of my favorite spots in KC. I had the tenderloin, medium rare. Cooked to perfection. One of my favorite sandwiches is the Veggie Burger (I order this even though I love meat!). There Grilled Cheese with Tomato Lentil Soup is stellar. And their Brunch is top notch!
We had a great night with friends who had not been here before. Most of our group had a burger variation and enjoyed them immensely. I had the seasonal quinoa with salmon and a kale salad, all wonderful. I also enjoyed the red wine blend!
So good and one of my favorites!
We discovered this neighborhood gem about a year ago. While we don't live close by, it has been a "go-to" whenever we have something going on downtown. It's perfect for dinner when friends are staying downtown, you have a work dinner that you don't want to "feel like a work dinner," or you have something special going on at the Kauffman. The food is always wonderful and the staff is warm and friendly, just like the atmosphere. From the exposed brick to the reclaimed wood tables and bar, this place makes you feel like you're "with friends."
Second visit, first time for a Sunday blunch. Love the atmosphere and vibe of this local restaurant, and their interesting menu choices. I had the omelet that had sausage, mushroom and roasted poblanos. My palate runs towards the spicy, and I would say this was much milder than I was hoping for (but very flavorful). Fruit instead of potatoes is my preference, and, unlike most fruit substitutions that are melon-heavy, this had a really nice assortment of berries. My wife got a burger. She was very complimentary of the quality of the beef, and loved the bun (she’s not a fan of too much bun v meat). Her only comment was that it needed to be seasoned (she asked for salt, not something she normally does). My son and his girlfriend have done the blunch here before, and split the lemon curd French toast and the eggs/bacon/potato breakfast. My wife and I both tasted the French toast and have to say were definitely wowed by the lightness and flavor. Lastly, a pet peeve of mine - it doesn’t dawn on me to specify no ice when I order OJ; that’s the way it should come. So, when my small OJ comes and the glass is filled with ice, it seems as if it’s a cost-saving measure. Please eliminate this practice or have the wait staff ask ice or no ice.
This place was recommended by a friend as a great place for a “haven’t met in person yet first date”. I wanted wine, a moderately priced menu, casual but groovy, hip vibe...and this covered all the bases. The staff was great, fun and personable. The food was awesome. (Hummus and a sirloin burger on brioche). It’s a bit loud in there but we made it work. Highly recommend.
Went for a business lunch with three guests. The food was fantastic. This time I had the BLT and it was the best BLT I have ever had. Previously I have had the grilled cheese and it was outstanding. It is not super quite, but, not terribly noisy either. Small place so consider a reservation. The server was efficient and did a good job, just not friendly. Overall it is one of my favorite places to eat in KC.
Sunday Brunch. Nice mix of breakfast and more standard fare. As usual, well prepared and presented. Service is consistently friendly but not to a point of interfering with table conversation. A "go to" spot for a nice relaxed meal with enough options to please everyone in your party.
