Excellent food and service
We were there to see a young performer named Jonathan Karrant who was entertaining out in the LOBBY... due to fact that the lounge is being remodeled. Decided to eat in the Westgate Room..... very , very nice place. Food was excellent, drinks were perfect, service was outstanding. The entertainer was the best part.
Food was overly salted, instead of enhancing the taste of the food it was the taste of the food. My dinner consisted of two fair sized shrimp & one scallop and about three ounces of risotto. The pear salad was plentiful and good, the dessert was very good and noteworthy. Service was good though a bit to familiar. Room is classic.
Food was excellent. Service, not so much. Brought bread, but no bread plates or butter, had to ask. Had to ask every single time we wanted water. Never asked if we cared for another glass of wine. Felt like we had to tackle a waiter to get anything. But, food was excellent. I just expected a better level of service considering the numer of staff members on the floor. Disappointing.
We really enjoyed this pre-symphony dinner. Especially the vegan choice of ravioli! Elegant ambience, top notch food and service.
Quality dining—scallopsxnd shrimp cooked perfectly, and one seldom sees food that has been sous vide. Excellent service—attentive without hovering.
Short ribs were tough & with inedible grizzled. Shrimp risotto was overcooked & oily. Salad used old wilting lettuce. Maitre'd was kind & helpful. Staff tried hard to please. Atmosphere reveals old Hotel elegance BUT there has been no attempt to keep the room in good condition. An old & worn feeling.
We went here for dinner before seeing Hamilton at the SD Civic Theater. Got there at 6 PM and had a nice relaxing dinner. My Steak Frites was perfectly cooked, but I prefer my vegetables a little more done, as the Brussels sprouts were like slightly cooked rocks. My wife has scallops and shrimp risotto which was scrumptious but lite on shrimp (2) and scallops (1). The wine was very good as was my Stone IPA! No desert, as we were trying to watch our sugar intake!
The service was excellent and the dining room quiet and conducive to conversation!
Amazing food and service. Broadway menu is a real value for what you get.
We went for restaurant week lunch. The soup was just warm - not hot. The scallop & shrimp risotto was much too spicy. I believe my friend's short rib pasta was fine. I should have sent mine back.
Theater dinner - great experience !!
The Westgate room is screaming for a major remodel. It's like stepping back in time in a bad way. Sterile, dull, boring. Four of us dined, two had good food, two had below average food. I just could not recommend this place with so many great, fun venues available downtown.
Perfect place for dinner before theatre! Park there and walk over in 2 minutes! They offered a nice 3 course pre theatre menu at a great price and service was quick!
Westgate is quite lovely and service was outstanding.
Immediately after exiting from the first performance of " Hamilton" at the civic theater last Saturday we ( 2 couples) dined at the Westgate Hotel - Westgate room . Due to the fact that both pre and post theater guests would be present , there was a very reasonable fixed menu with a entree choice between Ravioli, Steak and salmon.. My starter was a nice and unusual split pea soup ( red in color) and I finished off with a beautiful Creme Brulee for dessert. Wine was included. The elegance of the hotel and good friends made the evening very special. And of course "Hamilton" !
Absolutely lovely evening. Just a little cold temperature wise. They did change that when I told them I was cold.
Everything about our evening was great except they forgot to make my wife's entrée, and then they tried to charge me for it. My food was delicious and we enjoyed ourselves very much except for the one mistake. We are planning on going back again!
Only selection of Chardonnay by the glass was an awful $10 JLorre. This was a high end restaurant !
When I ordered it and took a sip I called over the waiter, who later tells me he is the manager. I asked him to take away the
wine and bring me a kir royale. He asked me what that was!!!! Really, the manager??? I told him to ask the bartender.
My entree was a steak which was so tough my knife could not cut into it. No one came over to see how we were enjoying our meal! I repeat, this was a high end restaurant!
My girlfriend asked for a cup of coffee at the end of the meal. When she asked for a little more, the "manager" said there were no second cups because she had a special coffee. No one told her about any special coffee when she ordered! So, no second cup.
When the bill of $150.00 arrived I noticed that I was charged for the $10 wine I sent back. I questioned this because I thought
it was so low class to bill me for it. The "manager" said it was not their fault I didn't like it!
That was really enough of the bad experience. I asked to see the manager and then he informed me that he was the manager.
Can't the Westgate Room do better than this?
Needless to say, I won't be back. I will also discourage my friends and acquaintances from dining at this restaurant.
My family and I came for Christmas dinner and were nicely accommodated in the back corner of the Westgate Room because we had a baby. The service was fine although we had to ask for refills of few things. But the 4 course meal was not good. There was a lobster with ravioli which was cold and a steak with peppercorn sauce that was so salty it was inedible. I liked the appetizer of a scallop and purée and the dessert but overall was sadly disappointed in the dinner. My husband was extremely disappointed. But the ambience of the hotel was so festive that it was nice just to be there for the evening.
The service was very good but the food was
Horrible! Realize it was a fixed menu for Christmas Eve but there wasn’t anyone dining and the food was not warm at all. The steak was so tough I just quit trying. It’s sad because I love this hotel. Try the bar food, it looked good.
A very enjoyable experience and a very elegant room. You feel like you are somewhere very nice for a couple of hours.
Exceeded my expectations! i am very particular about food and restaurants, but this was wonderful all around! the Lunch pricing was not too astronomical either, considering the quality of food and service you received.
Sit down Thanksgiving dinner. Bright lights, no music, no candlelight on the tables. Slow service. Two of six entrees delivered incorrectly. Grumpy waiter. Bill was miscalculated. Unfortunate choice for a special occasion. Unacceptable for a restaurant at this price level.
Ambiance, service excellent. Was disappointed in turkey and dressing...average quality/taste. Expected more from Westgate. Would try different entree next visit. Other courses were excellent.
Unbeknownst to us, they do not do a ‘quick dinner’ before a theater performance. The dining experience takes quite a bit of time. So, we opted to dine in the bar - for Happy Hour. It was unfortunate, because the wait staff in the dining room are quite courteous. The same cannot be said of the bartender. We did have a ‘quick dinner’ before our performance. But, the bartender is not what you would call ‘customer friendly’. He insisted on us paying for a meal that we returned - he stated, “you ordered it, you pay for it”. When I countered with “I’m allergic to one of the ingredients”, the reply was “you should’ve read the menu more carefully” (that ingredient was not listed). When I moved to look at the menu, he relented to deduct the item from the bill. His reply was, “sorry, I’m just doing my job”.
I might try the dining room. But, I will never return to the bar.
Food was delicious , enjoyed lunch, great experience.
We've been to the Westgate many times and will certainly return. We feel the ambience, service, and especially food is outstanding.
This is a very old school restaurant in terms of the decor and the great service. The food was great. I really enjoyed the scallop salad. The soup was awful, served from the buffet. Quiet place for an important business lunch. convenient location, valet parking. I didn't pay, but it is pretty pricey.
This hotel restaurant is VERY over priced for a salad and hamburger.
The wife and I were impressed with the service and the timing of our food. I can't think of anything thing bad to say about Westgate. We'll be back!
The food was excellent. The service was horrible. We were seated and not given drink menus at the start. Despite trying multiple times to stop someone and get a drink menu, it was to no avail. Once we were able to place a drink menu, it took forever for anyone to come take our order. The plates were basically just dropped in front of us on the table, not 'placed'. We ordered the baked Alaskan and I was slightly burned when it was brought to the table. It was served on an almost flat plate, the liquor slushing around and already on fire. To top it off, the waiter again just plopped it onto the table without any concern for the potential to harm someone. I had my hand on my wine glass and ended up being slightly burned by the flames. I would definitely not bring anyone back here. Its a shame, because the food was awesome.
Love eating at the Westgate, after stay always look forward to getting a great breakfast before we leave town. Westgate is just a great hotel to stay at large rooms great service
Good place to enjoy fine food in a quiet, comfortable environment.
Outstanding meal and service. Food was delicious. Best clam chowder I have ever had.
Very strange and awkward service. They are trying to be fancy, but don't know how to do it. Apparently it doesn't matter what you actually order off of the menu, they bring out what they like and how they want to present. I ordered crab pasta and was brought ravioli. But we didn't see a waiter for at least 20 minutes after our order was delivered so I just ate it. It was good, just not what I ordered. Although I did not order all of the sand that came with the clams.
Since the moment we got their our server was friendly and helpful. Great selection on the wine list and the dinner menu. Everything was delicious with a 5 star service!
The Westgate Room is a lovely more formal venue with a classic French-American cuisine and excellent service.
ALways a pleasure!! Great crab cakes and ravioli !
The Westgate Room is a throw-back to hotel dining in the 50s-60s except the food is much better than it was then. An elegant, sophisticated decor, white linen, formal service staff, but an updated menu of higher quality. It is quiet and definitely for the older crowd. I doubt that millennial would be comfortable here but there parents certainly would. My wife and I had a lovely meal for the second time and will likely return again.
We love coming here before the Opera at the Civic Center. The Seafood chowder was delicious as was my salmon entre. Not overdone (which is how 90% of restaurants serve it). My husband had the beef tenderloins and and said they were done just right. He ate every bite of the very generous portion. In fact, we too full for dessert. The Westgate Room is so beautiful and the service is attentive without being annoying.
