The Westgate Hotel - The Westgate Room Ratings and Reviews
Unbeknownst to us, they do not do a ‘quick dinner’ before a theater performance. The dining experience takes quite a bit of time. So, we opted to dine in the bar - for Happy Hour. It was unfortunate, because the wait staff in the dining room are quite courteous. The same cannot be said of the bartender. We did have a ‘quick dinner’ before our performance. But, the bartender is not what you would call ‘customer friendly’. He insisted on us paying for a meal that we returned - he stated, “you ordered it, you pay for it”. When I countered with “I’m allergic to one of the ingredients”, the reply was “you should’ve read the menu more carefully” (that ingredient was not listed). When I moved to look at the menu, he relented to deduct the item from the bill. His reply was, “sorry, I’m just doing my job”.
I might try the dining room. But, I will never return to the bar.
This is a very old school restaurant in terms of the decor and the great service. The food was great. I really enjoyed the scallop salad. The soup was awful, served from the buffet. Quiet place for an important business lunch. convenient location, valet parking. I didn't pay, but it is pretty pricey.
The food was excellent. The service was horrible. We were seated and not given drink menus at the start. Despite trying multiple times to stop someone and get a drink menu, it was to no avail. Once we were able to place a drink menu, it took forever for anyone to come take our order. The plates were basically just dropped in front of us on the table, not 'placed'. We ordered the baked Alaskan and I was slightly burned when it was brought to the table. It was served on an almost flat plate, the liquor slushing around and already on fire. To top it off, the waiter again just plopped it onto the table without any concern for the potential to harm someone. I had my hand on my wine glass and ended up being slightly burned by the flames. I would definitely not bring anyone back here. Its a shame, because the food was awesome.
Very strange and awkward service. They are trying to be fancy, but don't know how to do it. Apparently it doesn't matter what you actually order off of the menu, they bring out what they like and how they want to present. I ordered crab pasta and was brought ravioli. But we didn't see a waiter for at least 20 minutes after our order was delivered so I just ate it. It was good, just not what I ordered. Although I did not order all of the sand that came with the clams.
The Westgate Room is a throw-back to hotel dining in the 50s-60s except the food is much better than it was then. An elegant, sophisticated decor, white linen, formal service staff, but an updated menu of higher quality. It is quiet and definitely for the older crowd. I doubt that millennial would be comfortable here but there parents certainly would. My wife and I had a lovely meal for the second time and will likely return again.
We love coming here before the Opera at the Civic Center. The Seafood chowder was delicious as was my salmon entre. Not overdone (which is how 90% of restaurants serve it). My husband had the beef tenderloins and and said they were done just right. He ate every bite of the very generous portion. In fact, we too full for dessert. The Westgate Room is so beautiful and the service is attentive without being annoying.
Good pre-theater meal in a very lovely space. Service was formal but quite detached with little personal contact (some people may like that). No one asked if we were enjoying the meal. Food was good, but with muted flavors and on the bland side. Very quiet in the heavily-furnished, high-ceilinged room.
This is a romantic place that has a Eoropean kind of ambiance. There were many servers attending to you, they were very professional and gracious. The service was fast! The food was excellent! I felt like I was at the Ritz Carlton for a couple of hours. Highly recommended for dates, business conversations, important gatherings, anniversaries, etc. it was not that very expensive either! Overall, it's an excellent place to have a great dining experience!
The Westgate has one of the best chefs in San Diego preparing some of the best cuisine. The dining room is beautiful & best described as baroque. The perfect special occasion place. Within easy walking distance to the Spreckles and Civic Theatres.
WE HAD GREAT CHRISTMAS EVE DINNER-FOOD WAS SUPERB-SERVICE QUICK AND NOT INTRUSIVE-NEVER FELT RUSHED- NEVER HAD TO LOOK FOR SERVER- THEY WERE ALWAYS THERE AT THE RIGHT TIME-ATMOSPHERE CAN NOT BE TOPPED- ACTUALLY QUIET ENOUGH TO CARRY ON A NICE OVER DINNER CONVERSATION-DEFINITELY WILL RETURN-
I always love to do something special for the holidays so I chose to have tea at Westgate, which is funny as I dislike tea. The waitress suggested Ambrosia tea and it was delicious. The sandwiches, scones and cakes were delicious. The two waiters and the waitress were solicitous and helpful. I look forward to doing this again next year.
Amateurish, seemingly inexperienced waitstaff from the moment we walked in until the moment we departed. Too many errors and missteps to list here, but suffice it to say it was a train wreck. I'd be embarrassed if I was the manager. Lighting is garish, dining room was cold enough that I needed to put my coat on during the meal. Afterward we walked to the bar across the hallway for live music and there is obviously some sort of sewer problem, because it stank. This experience can be yours, too. All you have to do is cough up $400 for dinner and a couple drinks for four.
We enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner here, it was a gourmet meal that was very well prepared. There were only a few people dining around 4:30 pm so it was not crowded and noisy which I liked very much. The Service was fantastic and so was the food, they don't "over feed" you which is another thing I loved about it. The table decorations and the floral arrangements through out the Lobby and bar area were absolutely gorgeous! I took a lot of pictures of the flowers alone. Beautiful Christmas tree there also and it was fun watching families get together to snap a few photos in front of the tree. My only down spots were how price the meal was and also the fact that the Westgate told Open Table that we did not show up for our reservation. Made me unhappy especially since we spoke to the two days prior to confirm that we were coming for dinner. We checked in with the lovely Sunny who waited on us for dinner.
This was our first visit to the Westgate Room and it was Thanksgiving. The fixed price menu was very appropriate to the day but we look forward to seeing a more normal offering. The room is very elegant and was very quiet. The service was just a tad slow given the very quiet day but all in all we enjoyed our holiday dinner.
