Established in 1920, The Waverly Inn was reopened in 2006 by Vanity Fair Editor-in-Chief Graydon Carter along with Sean MacPherson and Eric Goode (of the Maritime and Bowery Hotels) and Emil Varda. Tucked into the ground floors of two adjoining townhouses, the dining room's red booths, fireplaces and low amber lighting provide an attractive and cozy hangout for the city’s best and brightest. Chef Oscar Lorenzzi's menu features American classics alongside contemporary seasonal dishes using organic, local ingredients.

I was visiting New York, as I often do. I chose The Waverly Inn because I thought of it as a bit of a quintessential New York spot. We arrived 40 minutes early planning to enjoy a drink at the bar. We were immediately seated and then ignored for 20 minutes. The service was indifferent for the entire meal...literally over the waiter's shoulder at times. The famed "chicken pot pie" was tasteless. The wine list was grossly over priced . There are MANY better options where hospitality is understood and practiced.
The new chef changed the Waverly's signature chicken pot pie dish and it is now horrible and not worth eating. Huge chunks of chicken, some with flaps of skin. Peas, but no carrots or mushrooms and just one pearl onion. The crust is no longer flaky; it's like Swanson's. Better to stay home and eat a frozen pie than pay up for this. Bye, bye Waverly.
Wow guys. Just because you're a New York institution, you're not more important than your customers. We had a nice meal, good food. Not once did anybody ask us how we were, greet us, thank us, or even talk to us except for a breathtakingly perfunctory dusting of ordering when we asked for it. It was almost like the staff were there to see each other rather than their customers. When I asked about the cheese, the server said he just "didn't know". Cannot believe I paid $200 for a meal in a place where I left invisible. The server didn't even reply when I asked how he was. We left astonished.
Love The Waverly Inn! It's both cozy and lush, with delicious and interesting food options, great village ambiance where you're likely to find an insider crowd rather than tourists and college kids. Have lived in the Village for years, and am so glad that it's been upgraded and is still holding onto it's values!
More pretentious than any restaurant I've been to in Los Angeles. The sommelier and the waiter were hovering around us to the degree it was uncomfortable to eat. It wasn't clear that they were trying to give us good service or just wanted us out because we were occupying a good table. When I actually did need the waitress because my knife fell (which made a very loud crashing sound) nobody was around. I decided to leave the knife on the ground to see when any of the hovering busboys or waiters/waitresses would notice. They didn't. It was comical. We paid a lot for one of the least good meals in NYC. However, the ambiance is lovely. It does look like a Vanity Fair photo shoot setting. I'd return for drinks, only.
This is our favorite restaurant and a must-go place for special occasions. (We had our anniversary dinner there.) What makes it special is the attentive yet non-obtrusive
service and the impeccable menu. Truly a superior experience!
The only thing that I did not like was that our waiter left. Although another waiter took charge of our table, he should have said so before leaving. It is not a fast casual restaurant. Also I asked for a booth table and no one did anything about it. Not even explaining that they were not booths available. When I asked about it when we got our table , the hostess almost seemed ofended for me asking it we could have another table. We had a special gathering and it would have been nice. There were other booth tables available at that time. We are good customers and like being treated as if we were special.
I absolutely love this restaurant. It is quintessential New York City. Fantastic food (nothing flashy or "trendy", just really, really good). If you feel like a splurge, the $95 truffle mac will not disappoint you. Best if you get it with a few friends - it is quite rich.
Went to celebrate my anniversary, waiter commented on the tip we left (we left under 20% as the food came out very late, tables that sat 30 minutes after us were done with their food before we even got ours). Will never go back.
Awesome meal, great wine, very interesting location and building. Jeff, the sommelier, was awesome choosing a great Bordeaux for dinner and then a fortified wine that paired perfectly with bananas foster dessert. Great vibe, people watching was fun. Would definitely go back to experience more of the menu and ambience.
Great. The mac& cheese with truffles is the best but two people told us the price after we ordered. Wouldn't it be easier to put it in the menu so people do not feel that the waiter is telling them that it looks like they do not have the money to pay for it?
The portions were huge but the quality of the food just fair. We ordered the Dover Sole, Veal Milanese, Steak and Burger. Dover Sole, Veal Milanese, and Steak were fair. We have had a lot better at comparable restaurants. The burger was the best meal at our table which is not what we expected at all given the caliber of restaurant. The room is great but the food did not impress us at all. When we departed there was no host at the door to thank us for our visit or bid farewell which is something that I am accustomed to when we dine in restaurants of this caliber.
I came here a couple times before it became Graydon Carter's, and this was my first time back since. I took my mom for her birthday, the service was lovely, the food was delicious (although the steak was served rare and hard to chew when we ordered medium rare). The atmosphere is fun, but charming.
Met a friend there this past Saturday night. Started off great -- beautiful night, we were seated outside. But our waiter had a huge attitude problem. We asked if we could just get a normal salad as an appetizer (so many of the apps were crazy carb-heavy.) He rudely asked if we were also planning to get an entree. No, we just went there for lettuce. He said he could give us a plate of greens, and when I asked if I could also get shaved parmesan on it, he looked appalled, as if I asked him for $300 caviar. Needless to say, we each got a big bowl of lettuce with NO shaved parm and were charged $16 -- more than most of the appetizers.
My friend ordered the steak and I ordered the Ahi Tuna which was SO OVERCOOKED it had no taste. I considered sending it back, but I was so hungry and our waiter NEVER came out to see if our entrees were okay. My friend said her steak was fine, but her sides were terrible. Mine didn't have any sides.
The dirty martinis were the only good part about the experience. I'm bummed because the last time I ate there, I loved it, and so when my friend was in from LA on Saturday night, I was excited to bring her. I will NEVER go here again.
I was so disappointed in this restaurant! We husband had dover sole, which was VERY expensive and absolutely mediocre -- and this is one of the best fish in the world! I had what they said was a strip steak but again, mediocre and expensive. The served it sliced, which meant that a lot of the juices were already gone when it arrived at the table. And virtually no flavoring. Although my husband loves dessert we didn't stay to be further insulted by the food and the prices. Wait staff was competent and the setting is very nice, but I will never go there again. Absolutely not worth the money.
The Waverly Inn was even better than I expected. Celebrated a friend's birthday there last night. Everything we ate from the salmon tartar to the most incredible Amish chicken EVER to the birthday boy's banana's foster was 5 star. Service was impeccable, too! Can't wait to go back! Thank you, Waverly Inn team !!
