About The Walnut Room - Chicago
The world famous Walnut Room has been a Chicago tradition since 1907. Located on the 7th floor of Macy's on State Street the Walnut Room is the first restaurant ever opened in a department store. With Circassian wood paneling imported from Russia and Austrian chandeliers, the 17,000 square foot dining room is both elegant and comfortable. Conveniently located in the heart of the Chicago theatre district the Walnut Room is an excellent choice to take a break from shopping or for a meal and a glass of wine before the show. And don't forget about the Wine Bar at the Walnut Room. Opened in November of 2007, the Wine Bar features a small plate menu as well as more than 20 wines by the glass. After all, in our store, we have been feeding the shopping tradition since 1905.
Enjoy a classic Mrs. Herring's Chicken Pot Pie, French onion soup, or choose from the more contemporary menu offerings created by some of the country's best known chefs as members of the Macy's Culinary Council.

The Holiday menu was very limited. I was under the impression when we had to book it for 10:15am that there would be some breakfast items to choose. Nope. Who wants to eat chicken pot pie or a slab of meatloaf in the morning. I did get the nice chicken salad on a peach nest but, my portion was smaller than my mom's and the side bread was not fresh. Just not enough food or food choices that paired well for that time of the day.
We were promptly seated by a very professional and courteous staff. Our server, Hadiya, was kind, prompt, attentive, and helped make ours an outstanding dining experience. She’ was awesome!
We really enjoyed our time in the Walnut Room and intend to add it as another of our family’s Holiday traditions.
I am a creature of habit and the holidays have always had a certain order of events for me; window displays, lights of the season, people-watching, etc. After years of absence, I decided to throw caution to the wind and reserve a table at the Walnut Room. I am very happy to report this bastion of Christmas is a moment frozen in time. We were warmly greeted upon arrival and seated within five minutes of our check-in, with an option of sitting by the tree. I declined as there were families with children to whom this would have more meaning. Once seated, our server was quickly present and took our orders without delay. Mrs. Hering’s Chicken Pot Pie was just as I remembered; tender flaky top crust with carrots, peas, sweet corn, and leaks in a creamy chicken sauce with just a hint of wine. Served with a super-fresh mixed greens side salad, this was heaven on a plate. My better half ordered their Cider-glazed slow-roasted turkey; a genuine treat served with REAL whipped potatoes, fresh green beans, homemade gravy, and an interesting take on cranberry sauce; slightly curried. I would urge you to sample the fare in this historic icon that will, in all likelihood disappear, when the current tennants vacate. While not “haute cuisine”, it was an entirely adequate, albeit surprising, experience.
Love the Christmas tree. The chicken croisssant was terrible bread was hard small amount of chicken which was warm made me sick. Chicken oseago dinner was lukewarm won’t get again. We ordered and dinner was served no kidding 3 minutes later, clearly premade. Uck. Anthony the Waiter was awesome excellent service and showed he loved his job.Garlic oseago toast was delicious.
Everything was outstanding. Highly recommend. No complaints re: food and service. While Alex did not wait on me he was awesome, telling me where to sit to get a good view of the tree. Menu knowledge I was most impressed. Our waitress had not tried some of the dishes. Usually restaurants at their before opening meeting make a few dishes for staff to try so they can be excited when describing dishes.
Still have not heard from manager Gino. I purchased 2 wine glasses and they gave me used ( water drops / spot of wine). If you are not selling the new glasses tell the customer and don't ignore them when they call and leave a message. Thanks!
I have always treasured having dinner at the Walnut Room around the holidays. The ambiance is beautiful and it has become a tradition. Unfortunately, this year there was a notable decline in the quality of the service. We experience multiple issues with multiple servers/hosts that left me shaking my head in disappointment that what used to be a treasured and upscale dining experience has been brought down to average because of the service alone. Very sad.
My boyfriend and I wanted to come here because I have had a tradition of coming here and he since my family couldn’t go this year, he wanted to take me. I was so excited to come here, it’s one of my favorite things to do. Except, this time wasn’t like the rest. We were sat by the hostess, and then waited for 15 minutes without being given water or being greeted by a server. We then asked someone who walked by for a server, then proceeded to wait another 15 minutes and still nothing. We decided to leave because we had wasted 30 minutes of our time being ignored. Thank you for ruining a tradition that used to be so fun to me and thank you for ruining our fully planned out day. We don’t live close, so it took a lot to get there.
I was slightly disappointed with the entire experience. The food was just ok, the servicer seemed extremely annoyed, drinks were flat, but the Frango cheesecake was delicious. Basically, go for the pics., maybe some drinks and then treat yourself to a real dinner. FYI the menu is very short and drinks are mostly wine.
This was my last year dining here for the holidays! Service was terrible!!!! We were seated for more than 20minutes before anyone came to take our drink order and then another 15 before drinks were delivered. The only food worth eating is the frango mint pie, the rest seems like a high school cooking class made it this year. My mom was looking forward to this and I’m disappointed and ashamed at how bad it was. Luckily there are plenty of other great places to eat and enjoy the holidays in Chicago!
We were going to the Walnut room for our annual family Christmas outing. We were beyond disappointed with the Walnut Room. To say the service was lacking is giving them too much credit. Our server was Angelica. She took our drink order. After 20 minutes, she came to our table to let us know the bar was bAcked up; all the while all of the surrounding tables were getting their drink orders. After informing the manager of the situation, we received our drinks. Angelica took our dinner order. After quite awhile, our appetizer, a cheese tray, arrived. PATHETIC. Few cubes of cheese and a few grapes. After 30 minutes, our main course still hadn’t arrived. Had to approach a manager again. Was told food was delivered to the bar by mistake but the chef was remaking the order. We were told our drinks were going to be on the restaurant. Ordered another round at the manager’s suggestion. Waited another 30 minutes. Never received that round of drinks and we never received our entrees. The final straw was when the table next to us who had been there for only ten minutes had food delivered. Finally, After one hour and 40 minutes of waiting, we finally left. Never even had dinner. when I left the restaurant, I again spoke to a manager who Didnt really seem to care. I would never recommend this restaurant.
I've lived in Chicago my whole life and never went to the Walnut Room. I made a reservation well in advance so that I could take my teenage daughter and meet my husband for a holiday meal. The only time we could get was 4pm on a Mon. We get there and even though we had reservations, we had to wait in a line. We get place at a table. The tree and the room are pretty.The drinks weee decent. We got our appartizers after a little wait. Then we waited for an hour for our entrees. It took so long my husband had to leave back to work. There goes our special family meal. The waitress was nice and kept communicating with us about our food. She felt bad and finally had to get her manager on the case. Here's the topper, my meal tasted like cafeteria food. It was that bad. The potatos were just ok. My husband liked his chicken sandwhixh that I took to him in a Carry out box. The one nice thing was the waitress felt bad and sent us home with some Macy's mugs for waiting so long. It probably wasn't her fault. Anyways, I think the Walnut Room might be resting on its laurels a bit. Time to spend less on the tree and more on training employees and upgrading your menu.
Worst service. Dinner came out before the appetizer and wine. We didn’t get the wine until we were done with all of our food. We had to ask for water. We had to wait 20 minutes after our reservation to be seated and then didn’t see our waitress for another 15 minutes. Would not go back.
This was the third time I've visited the Walnut Room, but my first at the Holidays. Wow, what a difference. We've always been able to walk in and get a table without reservations but thank goodness I thought to make them this time, the place was packed! There was a VERY lengthy line of people who did not have reservations but we were seated almost immediately. Service was very slow but we were in no hurry so it didn't bother us. Although our waiter was very friendly, he seemed to speak little english. My drink was not what I ordered, but I drank it anyway. I had the meatloaf and it was delicious. The holiday tree was beautiful and did not disappoint. I'll definitely be returning!
