The world famous Walnut Room has been a Chicago tradition since 1907. Located on the 7th floor of Macy's on State Street the Walnut Room is the first restaurant ever opened in a department store. With Circassian wood paneling imported from Russia and Austrian chandeliers, the 17,000 square foot dining room is both elegant and comfortable. Conveniently located in the heart of the Chicago theatre district the Walnut Room is an excellent choice to take a break from shopping or for a meal and a glass of wine before the show. And don't forget about the Wine Bar at the Walnut Room. Opened in November of 2007, the Wine Bar features a small plate menu as well as more than 20 wines by the glass. After all, in our store, we have been feeding the shopping tradition since 1905.
Enjoy a classic Mrs. Herring's Chicken Pot Pie, French onion soup, or choose from the more contemporary menu offerings created by some of the country's best known chefs as members of the Macy's Culinary Council.

I thought the service and server were excellent. The quality of food was low and the cleanliness of the dining room (ie ceiling near vents and chandeliers) was atrocious.

We really enjoyed our food! My husband and I both ordered the BLT Jam Burger and it did NOT disappoint! I look forward to eating there again soon. We were also pleased that we could get a Revolution Anti Hero with our lunch too!

The Walnut Room is such an iconic and sumptuous Chicago dining destination. The interior is elegant with all the turn of the century classic wood interior and the views of State Street and yet it is casual and unpretentious. Our server was friendly and attentive and our food (I had the chicken pot pie and Wisconsin cheese platter and my friend had the flank steak salad) was delicious. I would definitely return.

An old Chicago standard, easy to overlook (on 7th floor of Macy's), which makes it relatively easy to get in when other options are booked.

Food was good, on par with a neighborhood restaurant, a little below the typical downtown restaurant. Service was outstanding.

Server was very slow and just seemed like he was going through the motions.
We were in about 5:15pm on Saturday night. Food selections were very limited.
We were put in a dark corner table for 4 and there were about 4 other tables with other guests. Creepy feeling. Very disappointing for an icon of Chicago dining. I would only think about returning at Christmas when the tree is up.

Food was excellent, but service from our waiter (not anyone else on the staff) was lacking.

We always have an excellent experience at the Walnut Room. We love the ambience, the service is always great, the food is always delicious, it’s great to go at a time other than Christmas as it usually never crowded and it’s always the perfect beginning of it lovely evening

Having worked at the old Marshall Field’s, it is a treat for me to see how Macy’s has left the Walnut Room intact for this and, I hope, future generations. The Walnut Room should always stay a Chicago tradition. The service and food were excellent, too.

Still a beautiful room and servers are very good. Wife’s Fish was very good. The famous P.O. pie no longer has a light and fluffy crust. That was my only disappointment

I went for lunch with my 10 year old granddaughter while on a shopping trip. It was 1:30 on Sunday afternoon. The Walnut Room is a large venue and there were perhaps 6-7 tables occupied giving it a eerie feeling. Service was initially good but after the food was delivered our server disappeared. My granddaughter dropped her fork, this was observed by someone bussing the next table. He looked but did nothing, we expected that he would inform our waiter. No one came, I flagged down the waiter at the next station. He was obviously annoyed with the request for another fork but did give us one. He did not say a word but put the set-up on our table with a surly look. Our waiter finally came, we paid our bill and left. The food was very good and the price was nice but overall it was a totally uncomfortable, unpleasant experience.

I took out-of-towners to Walnut Room for dinner since it’s a Chicago institution. It was a bad experience. I had a reservation through OpenTable. First I got an email we were a no-show, then I got an email my reservation was cancelled. Apparently the hostess didn’t check us in properly, so I could’t leave a review on OpenTable. I had to contact OpenTable a second time after I had sorted out the fiasco of my reservation to make this review possible. The server took forever to take our orders. Four people got their orders while the fifth had to wait another 10 minutes. One’s dish was ice cold (and it was supposed to be a hot dish) and had to be sent back. Our server was nowhere to be found, so we had to flag another server. Then a second drink never showed up. We had to get our check since we had to be somewhere else after dinner. Again, we had to flag another server just to get our check. It was Saturday, and it wasn’t even busy. We barely made it to our next destination on time, and we had allowed ourselves an hour and a half for dinner. Nice ambience, but service left much to be desired.

Our service brought the experience down. We got there an hr and 45 minutes before a show. when there may have been 2 other occupied tables. It took 15 minutes before we placed our order. One guest's soup came within about 5 minutes. I had to ask if our cheese plate appetizer was coming after 30 min. It came with our meals about 10-15 min later. I had to ask someone to send the wait person to give us the bill when we noticed with had 20 min for the performance to start. After about 5 minutes, she showed up. I gave her my CC before seeing the bill to expedite the process. We barely had time to finish our meal and left a half eaten appetizer. We made it to our seats with 3 minutes to spare. With the historic significance, food and ambiance we would go back but request a different wait person.

Nice atmosphere - it feels like you are in a scene from Mad Men. The prices were great and the food was very good. The view is another reason to go. Service was attentive and pleasant.

Very quiet for a Saturday, we arrived at 5 and only around 10 per cent of the room was occupied.
Crab cakes were excellent, husband's chopped salad needed more dressing it was very dry.
Not much of an atmosphere.
