About The Walnut Room - Chicago

The world famous Walnut Room has been a Chicago tradition since 1907. Located on the 7th floor of Macy's on State Street the Walnut Room is the first restaurant ever opened in a department store. With Circassian wood paneling imported from Russia and Austrian chandeliers, the 17,000 square foot dining room is both elegant and comfortable. Conveniently located in the heart of the Chicago theatre district the Walnut Room is an excellent choice to take a break from shopping or for a meal and a glass of wine before the show. And don't forget about the Wine Bar at the Walnut Room. Opened in November of 2007, the Wine Bar features a small plate menu as well as more than 20 wines by the glass. After all, in our store, we have been feeding the shopping tradition since 1905.
Enjoy a classic Mrs. Herring's Chicken Pot Pie, French onion soup, or choose from the more contemporary menu offerings created by some of the country's best known chefs as members of the Macy's Culinary Council.

Not a big menu, buy what they have tasted good. Service was so so, but it is the holidays and they were very busy. Love the nostalgia and history of the restaurant. Walnut Room wine and engraved glasses were neat.

There are two lines. One for reservations and the other for walk ins. We had a reservation and were seated in a timely fashion. Our server was very nice and pleasantly accommodated our requests for pictures by the tree. The food was good enough. The atmosphere was festive.

Enjoyed our lunch at the Walnut Room. We arrived early for our reservation so decided to get a drink at the wine room. Very nice, friendly staff.

We sat by the windows.
The macaroni and cheese was bland and overcooked.
The turkey cobblestone sandwich was lukewarm and did not have enough cranberry mayo.
The chicken salad was bland, croissant was cold and soggy.
Our server did not smile and seemed to resent having to serve us.
This is our 4th year coming here to have lunch at Christmas time.
I keep hoping we will have a better experience each but am always disappointed.

The potpie was really under standard, not at all like the potpie from Marshal Fields. It's a sentimental favorite, but they should just give it up and concentrate on the newer menu items that were quite good and well prepared. The service was attentive and professional, from hostess to food runner. I'm not sure why I made a reservation - they just asked if I had one and seated me when I said "Yes". There was no list, no checking off of names, and no indication that the reservation mattered at all. Overall it's a recommended dining spot, especially for impressing out of town guests.

It's a great holiday tradition to dine in the Walnut Room.
The food is comfort food with a tweak ...the holiday mugs are
fun to collect...(my brandy alex could have been colder...)
the tree this year is a big colorful static bore...

We were disappointed in the lack of decorations....the only thing decorated was the big Xmas tree and that was a little disappointing as well.

Went right in. Had reservations. I think reservations are a must at this time of the year.
Food was really good. Service quick. Waiter outstanding.
Would recommend a bread service with the entree.

Not quite what it was when the store was Marshall Fields, but still fine. Was really disappointed with the tree decorations. Too fond memories of the old Field's trees. They still have the chicken pot pie from Field's which was a holiday tradition.

I worked at Marshall Fields some years ago so I have eaten in the restaurants for years. Last Tuesday I ordered the Asian chicken salad. Have had it many times. But on Tuesday I was so pleasantly surprised to be served an absolutely gorgeous salad. It was beautiful and the most delicious salad I have ever had in the store restaurants. I've wanted to call the manager to let them know. Fabulous experience. Delicious lunch.

Our table was ready when we arrived, but service was slow and the wait staff very inexperienced plus we had a trainee to boot! The food has really gone downhill from the Marshall Field Days. The tree was very nice and it is a tradition to dine under the tree in the Walnut Room.

This was my first and last time visiting the Walnut room. I was very excited to try this restaurant for the first time because I've only ever heard great things about it but I was EXTREMELY disappointed. The food was absolute GARBAGE. I ordered the slow roasted turkey and not only was my meal cold, but it tasted what I imagine cat food tastes like. My friend ordered the crab cakes and hers tasted like an overly salted tamale. The only positive thing I can say about this restaurant is that the server was very attentive and knew what he was doing (Oscar).

My sister wanted to take me to the Walnut Room for a birthday lunch. Neither of us had been there for years, but have enjoyed it in the past. I liked the online reservation system--BUT we said we were celebrating a birthday and it was never acknowledged. My sister also told the waiter and it was still not acknowledged. On arrival, there are 2 lines, 1 with reservations, 1 without. It seemed as if they were alternating between seating reservations and no reservations. I noticed that we were seated all the way in the back in a corner (with a reservation) and a couple from the no reservation line were seated near the tree. The tree is one of the main attractions during Christmas.

The malbec wine I ordered was not good and I would not order it again. MY sister's eggnog was excellent and well worth the $8 tab. We were informed that complimentary bread is no longer brought to the table, but we could order garlic bread for $6. We opted not. I had the butternut squash pasta and it was excellent. My sister ordered the asiago chicken. It was moist and tender and she had enough leftover for a second meal. The toffee on the ice cream pie was chewy instead of crisp. The frango cheesecake was dense and VERY chocolaty, more mint mudpie than cheesecake.

When our food was served, there was no flatware on the table. We told the food runner we had no utensils and were summarily told that we needed to find our server for it. We then promptly took some off a neighboring table. I informed the server, who apologized repeatedly. A manager also came to the table to apologize and gave us complimentary glass mugs. We told the manager we did not want the runner disciplined, but perhaps could use some retraining.

Overall it was a good lunch with only a few minor flaws. We also had a fairy princess come to the table, granting wishes.

Helpful hint: there are two lines - one for people with reservations and one for those without reservations. I was told to stand in the line for those with reservations (since I had one for 12:30 p.m.-what luck!) I ended up standing in line for well over 30 minutes after my reservation came and went, and watched as everyone in the line without reservations were escorted to a table and greeted with warm regards. So don't even bother getting a reservation. Oh and if you have a large group, you will likely be seated immediately. Go ahead! Enjoy your meal while those who made a reservation in advance watch you from behind the fence and wonder what the heck they did wrong. I didn't even bother to stay for lunch. If they can't handle a reservation during lunch on a Monday, I can only imagine the disaster it will be to try to get in during the actual holiday season. Thanks for nothing Macy's, you ruined Christmas.

It is a family tradition to come down and dine under the tree at Christmas. We always enjoy it and this year we were able to book a table because we came down earlier than usual and found out about "open table" reservations--beats waiting for 2-3 hours!

Always a cosy place for a special meal. :) & to revive one after a shopping excursion. Lunch was extra special because of the holiday season, but the dining room and bill of fare always makes for a nice dining experience. Our cocktails and lunches were delish! :)

Definitely not as nice as when it was run by Marshall Fields. The service was very slow, the food was barely warm and the Christmas Tree used to be absolutely beautiful, but now just generic decorations. Really disappointing. No warm Christmas ambiance. This was a Christimastime get together for my sister and daughter and I, and we sadly, definitely won't be returning.

We were not approached at our table for 15minutes. It was embarrassing for us all!! Food had been sitting somewhere not hot not cold. So sorry to say this but my daughter was so excited. The velvet roping they use to keep you "away" is so tacky!! We didn't know how to get in. Sorry for complaining but these are simple fixes. Thank you for asking.
