About The Walnut Room - Chicago

The world famous Walnut Room has been a Chicago tradition since 1907. Located on the 7th floor of Macy's on State Street the Walnut Room is the first restaurant ever opened in a department store. With Circassian wood paneling imported from Russia and Austrian chandeliers, the 17,000 square foot dining room is both elegant and comfortable. Conveniently located in the heart of the Chicago theatre district the Walnut Room is an excellent choice to take a break from shopping or for a meal and a glass of wine before the show. And don't forget about the Wine Bar at the Walnut Room. Opened in November of 2007, the Wine Bar features a small plate menu as well as more than 20 wines by the glass. After all, in our store, we have been feeding the shopping tradition since 1905.
Enjoy a classic Mrs. Herring's Chicken Pot Pie, French onion soup, or choose from the more contemporary menu offerings created by some of the country's best known chefs as members of the Macy's Culinary Council.

Visiting from California. First visit to Macy's, had heard about the Christmas Tree. We were able to get 7:30p Thursday reservations. The food was good and the restaurant is beautiful.

Had a great time, everything was simple and taken care of. Great service, timing was great and food was amazing. Only thing I’d change was the reservations.... they didn’t seem to know ppl had reservations. But we got in before our time so it worked out.

Very disappointed with where we were seated...requested ahead of time to sit near The Christmas tree, however were seated in a side room. We loved the food and our server.

Great that the Walnut Room accepts Open Table reservations, as this is a must go to every year at Christmas for us, to sit under the Tree and have chicken pot pie! No worries with a reservation that we would not get to do our annual dinner. The staff was totally into the holiday spirit.

I do not understand why this place is on peoples "must do" or "holiday tradition" list. The place was filthy. Food all over the floors, paint chipping off walls, bathroom door greasy and smudged. The hostesses all looked like they just rolled out of bed, were all chewing gum, and had no idea what was going on. Our waiter put his fingers in his mouth twice at our table. A bus boy asked to take our plates away and then held out another diners dirty dish and asked my daughter to put hers on top of it. The food was horrible...dried out pasta, grilled cheese that wasn't even melted, gooey chicken pot pie that had a weird citrus flavor. The list goes on and on and on. I hated it. And hate myself for having spent money here. Never again. Gross gross gross.

The Walnut Room is a Christmas tradition going way back. Make your reservation well in advance. Or stand in line for a while. 7th floor of Macy’s/Marshall Field’s. Food is fine but you don’t go for the food, you go for the atmosphere. Service was above average despite the semi-chaotic scene due to the holiday rush.

Very surprised that there was immediate seating at this popular Holiday experience. After being seated, we waited nine minutes for our waiter to acknowledge us even though passed us several times. Food was as expected, good. Not at all impressed by the cleanliness or organization of the staff. The Christmas tree was beautiful and my wife andI would go again but only for the tradition.

We enjoyed our experience at the Walnut Room so much that we decided not to wait for next year. We returned a week after our first meal there.

Our server was excellent and the food is awesome!

Staff is outstanding. Goes the extra mile to make the experience enjoyable without being over the top. Our waiter genuinely worked well to insure a good experience. Only one suggestion, not a complaint, look to expand the menu for vegetarian dishes.

For the price, there could have been more food on the plate. I ordered the crab cakes. They arrived with mashed potatoes & a salad with mixed greens & a tasteless dressing. The cakes were very, very small (about an inch & a half in diameter, and less than a 1/4 inch thick), but they were tasty. The mashed potatoes were well made but tasteless as was the salad. Their garlic, asiago cheese bread was very delicious, as was their Irish Coffee. My husband did enjoy the Chicken Pot Pie & said it was well worth the trip downtown. As for me, I would definitely have something else.

The food was mediocre. The turkey seemed as though it had been plated and then left out for a while before being brought to our table. The top of the potatoes were crusted over. We were very rushed, staff kept asking to take our food away (once while I still had my fork in my hand) this was only about 20 mins into being seated. I will not be returning.

We had a reservation -- which we made months ago. The hostess led us to a table in the corner of the room with a great view of the elevators. We thought that with a reservation, we would have received a better table. We did ask to be closer to the tree-- and after about a 10 minute wait, we were placed next to the tree. so, this second seat was more what we were expecting, and we are appreciative of that.

The hostess staff seemed very unorganized and haphazard.

It was a wonderful experience. Booked online during the Christmas holiday. I took my whole family. Service was unbelievable. The food was outstanding. We sat by the tree and enjoying the atmosphere. The one thing I would like are more options for vegetarians. The drinks for Christmas on the menu certainly where the best. Thank you for a enjoyable time.

My wife and I arrived and were seated in less than a minute. The holiday drinks were excellent and our waitress was there immediately. She took our order and we were eating in no time. My wife had the chicken pot pie (her favorite for the last thirty years) and I had the holiday crab cakes. This was an absolutely perfect day. I highly recommend the Walnut Room, a Chicago Tradition, to everyone and the kids will love it. And don't forget the ferry god mother visiting every table who will grant your every wish. (This included a man behind us wishing to get rid of Donald Trump.)

Thoroughly disappointed. On a Monday night with a reservation we were seated promptly, but with bad service. Super friendly waitress, but the little things matter. Like water... napkins and silverware before our food comes out...creamer with the coffee before the coffee is cold...clearing dirty dishes before dessert is served. The runners were not in sync at all with our waitress. The Walnut Room was a one time visit to see a tradition for many that ultimately lacked luster and was not worthy of a repeat visit. Even for nostalgia. Even with the snow falling and beautiful windows, it was too bumpy of a service experience to enjoy.

We were very disappointed in the cleanliness and food. Both of us were sick when we got home from eating the lobster bisque.
The Walnut Room was a first class place years ago and now it's just another place with a big tree. Sad.

Took 2 minutes to be greeted by the four people standing at the hostess stand. Once we were seated, it took a long time to be acknowledged by a waiter and get drinks. Menu was reasonably priced, but food selection was a bit odd.

Disappointed, unfortunately, after wanting to visit at Christmas for many years. Food was mediocre, service was mediocre, drink order was wrong and no one checked back in after our food was delivered. Long wait to get a takeout box and to get our check.

The Holiday menu was very limited. I was under the impression when we had to book it for 10:15am that there would be some breakfast items to choose. Nope. Who wants to eat chicken pot pie or a slab of meatloaf in the morning. I did get the nice chicken salad on a peach nest but, my portion was smaller than my mom's and the side bread was not fresh. Just not enough food or food choices that paired well for that time of the day.

We were promptly seated by a very professional and courteous staff. Our server, Hadiya, was kind, prompt, attentive, and helped make ours an outstanding dining experience. She’ was awesome!

We really enjoyed our time in the Walnut Room and intend to add it as another of our family’s Holiday traditions.

I am a creature of habit and the holidays have always had a certain order of events for me; window displays, lights of the season, people-watching, etc. After years of absence, I decided to throw caution to the wind and reserve a table at the Walnut Room. I am very happy to report this bastion of Christmas is a moment frozen in time. We were warmly greeted upon arrival and seated within five minutes of our check-in, with an option of sitting by the tree. I declined as there were families with children to whom this would have more meaning. Once seated, our server was quickly present and took our orders without delay. Mrs. Hering’s Chicken Pot Pie was just as I remembered; tender flaky top crust with carrots, peas, sweet corn, and leaks in a creamy chicken sauce with just a hint of wine. Served with a super-fresh mixed greens side salad, this was heaven on a plate. My better half ordered their Cider-glazed slow-roasted turkey; a genuine treat served with REAL whipped potatoes, fresh green beans, homemade gravy, and an interesting take on cranberry sauce; slightly curried. I would urge you to sample the fare in this historic icon that will, in all likelihood disappear, when the current tennants vacate. While not “haute cuisine”, it was an entirely adequate, albeit surprising, experience.

Love the Christmas tree. The chicken croisssant was terrible bread was hard small amount of chicken which was warm made me sick. Chicken oseago dinner was lukewarm won’t get again. We ordered and dinner was served no kidding 3 minutes later, clearly premade. Uck. Anthony the Waiter was awesome excellent service and showed he loved his job.Garlic oseago toast was delicious.

Everything was outstanding. Highly recommend. No complaints re: food and service. While Alex did not wait on me he was awesome, telling me where to sit to get a good view of the tree. Menu knowledge I was most impressed. Our waitress had not tried some of the dishes. Usually restaurants at their before opening meeting make a few dishes for staff to try so they can be excited when describing dishes.
Still have not heard from manager Gino. I purchased 2 wine glasses and they gave me used ( water drops / spot of wine). If you are not selling the new glasses tell the customer and don't ignore them when they call and leave a message. Thanks!

I have always treasured having dinner at the Walnut Room around the holidays. The ambiance is beautiful and it has become a tradition. Unfortunately, this year there was a notable decline in the quality of the service. We experience multiple issues with multiple servers/hosts that left me shaking my head in disappointment that what used to be a treasured and upscale dining experience has been brought down to average because of the service alone. Very sad.
