Food used to be consistently outstanding in the Walnut Room but has now gone down hill, especially with their signiture specials such as salad plates and chicken pot pie. Pot pie no longer contains a white bechemel sauce with lots of vegetables and a puff pastry topping, but instead contains a mushroom based sauce with chicken and a regular pie crust on top. Salad with pot pies was changed from romaine with mandarin oranges and sesamie seed dressing, a tasty, signiture dressing that was used to be sold in Market Place food area of Macy's, to a salad of only greens with a too vinegary tasting dressing that was so overpowering that I had to add sugar to it in order to make it palatable enough to keep from choking on it.
Fruit and chicken salad plate with string potato basket had very skimpy servings including two thinly sliced 1/2 pieces of fruit bread on it and a tiny potato basket that used to be fairly large. We were embarrassed that this was served to a friend of ours whom we were treating to lunch in the Walnut Room.
No bread or rolls were served with the entres which used to be standard part of each entre. Prices were right, but they are starting to skimp on entres from lunch to probably save money. Too bad, because we really used to dine at the Walnut Room regularly and take guests there all of the time.
On the postitive side, we really appreciated the comfortable setting and the conversationally friendly atmosphere. Our server was friendly and very helpful.
Wonderful elegant restaurant for celebrations, holidays or just when shopping.
It was not spectacular. The food was mediocre at best. Cheese plate was small and did not have all the cheese. I wanted the quiche but apparently the chef refuses to sell it after 3. I probably won’t be back, but it is off me and my family’s bucket list.
So much fun. Gorgeous spot. And the food was both surprisingly delicious and reasonably priced.
We went to the Walnut Room to celebrate a coworkers birthday. Service was really bad. We were seated and we had to ask the bartender to find our waitress to place our order about 20 min later and had to find our waitress every other time we needed her. Food took a really long time to come out as well. It was not busy at all, so no excuse for the bad service.
I have always gone to the Walnut Room at Christmas time. When it was part of Marshall Fields I remembered they had a Champagne brunch. Wanted a reasonable brunch buffet. Called and sure enough Macy’s has maintained the tradition. Great buffet and wonderful Turn of Century ambiance. The best part was the fabulous service since it wasn’t packed with shoppers.
This is always my go to place when I am showing off the city and of course the historic Marshall Field"s. Our guests throughly enjoyed the pot pie (also historic). I have dietary restrictions, and my order was not accurately prepared by the kitchen staff (not the fault of our server). The manager came over to our table, apologized, offered to re make my meal, and then removed the charge. Customer service at the Walnut Room....always!!!
See you soon!
Ahhhh having the opportunity to again enjoy this special place was a thrill. Great space, wonderful music, exceptional food and BJ was excellent waiter with sparkling eyes, great service, he made our day.
I had the Asiago chicken. It was awesome!! I can't wait to be back in Chicago to try the potpie
I love the Walnut Room, especially for celebrating the holidays and birthdays
but I recommend it for anytime you want to treat yourself without breaking the budget. A great place to go with girlfriends.
We were there early for dinner so not crowded; service seemed a bit slow given this...but very friendly and the food was great. Nice views from big windows and the ambiance nice. Great to see Impossible Foods (burgers) partnering with Macys! Thumbs up.
The staff was very professional and provided excellent service.
The Walnut Room is my favorite restaurant in the city of Chicago. Whenever I venture in, I try to make sure I stop by for a meal. I LOVE the entire experience of dining there. A+++++++++++++
Very nice birthday lunch with good food and service.
I brought my husband here for his birthday, having dined here for a girl's day out. Perfect ambiance for quiet conversation. Feels elegant (loved the classical music), but dressed up or down, you won't feel out of place. The servers, hostesses and even though table bussers spoke kindly. Food was beautiful and tasty. We came specifically for the chicken pot pie, but my quiche and salad was perfectly seasoned and complemented each other. Comfort food, wonderful prices. Glad we shared the Frango mint pie! Even though we didn't sit by the window, the view of our city is so beautiful.
Bruce gave us great service! The meal was delicious! The atmosphere was classic Chicago. Great experience!
Childhood memory revisited. Excellent experience.
We ate dinner here prior to a show. The food was really good as was the service. My son ordered the burger and said it was one of the best burgers he ever had! Chicken salad with fruit and breads was very tasty, and we all shared a piece of the Chocolate Frango Mint pie. Prices were very reasonable. Would be fun to go back around the holidays - the old Marshall Field's store has such a history and is a beautiful building. Enjoy!
Excellent, thank you!
The Walnut Room- We arrived early. They easily accommodated us. The menu was small, BUT that means that what have is absolutely cooked perfectly. Wife had the bbq burger summer special. The meat was absolutely cooked well done (her preference) but it was still moist. I had an amazing chicken with a dijon mustard atop of it. Absolutely moist and cooked perfectly. I was very impressed by how much food was given for the price and atmosphere. Our server Jesus was very informed also. He suggested the butternut squash soup of the day. GREAT IDEA! Will definitely go again.
When we got off the elevator I felt like we were back in time at an old time restaurant. The hostess was slow to seat us & the waiter took a while to come to our table. After the waiter came, he was very attentive & professional. Suggest getting the garlic cheese bread... it was amazing! Food was good!
Was lovely, more special due to family history there. Service was great, food was good.
We went for Sunday Brunch. The buffet had a lot of choices and the food was delicious. It was not crowded at all at 11 am. We had reservations just in case. The restaurant reminded us of dining in department store restaurants after shopping in days past. The room is gorgeous.
Dining at the Walnut Room was a delightful experience! We loved the food and the service. The decor is stunning. The prices were excellent! We will be back on our next trip to Chicago.
Wonderful, fantastic, enjoyable, reasonable, excellent service, great ambience
The Walnut Room offers a place to make any meal special. The wonderful historic venue is beautifully maintained, the service is great and the food is exceptional. I can't wait to come back during the holiday season.
My daughter and I chose to eat at the Walnut Room prior to attending the theater. We had gone before many years ago and had had a wonderful experience. We made the right choice! We were greeted with an enthusiastic “Welcome” and seated near a window with a view of State Street. Our waitress, Genevieve, was a true gem! She was very attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. We asked for her recommendation and we went with it. Started with a cheese and fruit tray, which was simple, yet tasty and fun to share. I had the Carmelized Alaska Salmon with risotto and my daughter had the Wisconsin Asiago Chicken. Both were very good! We had the Summer Picnic menu dessert of Angel Food cake and sugared berries! Perfect choice! We will be back!
Great place! Food is terriffic and service is excellent. Historic restaurant in Macy's downtown Chicago.
We enjoyed our luncheon at the Walnut Room. Thank you for great food and good service.
Dined on a Sunday and surprised to have buffet. It was a pleasant surprise.
Beautiful presentation and delicious choices. Service was excellent from the hostess
to our very attentive server.
Our lunch was very nice. We had heard that the Walnut room was a nice place to see. The lunch area was fine but I thought the rest of the old building was prettier. We sat by a big window and could see the city. Our waiter was very kind and took good care of us. We enjoyed our lunch.
Enjoyed lunch at the Walnut Room before The Cher Musical at the Oriental Theater. Attentive service and lovely atmosphere. Couldn't resist the delicious Frango Mint cheesecake!
Not enough servers on duty, had to wait 20 minutes to place our order
What chaos!! Not enough servers to even seat the people with reservations. The waiter was wasy over worked serving us cold coffee, taking only a partial order at our table before moving on and it took forever for one glass of wine to be delivered. Such a disappointment.
Great location, old style ambience and excellent food!
Service was great. Food was good. We loved it. It was nice to go to a restaurant where we could talk and actually hear each other. The only problem I had was the temperature. It was so cold in there
Food was great!
Large party was there celebrating a birthday with a person playing the bagpipes for way too long. Was hard to have a conversation with them playing and it became annoying.
Enjoyed the chicken pot pie. Coffee was full of flavor, a real change from most “American” coffee. Waiter Dontrell was outstanding and attentive. He added to the calm luxurious feeling.
Restaurant is inside the Macy's downtown Chicago. Did know this restaurant was there, been in this store many times. I would recommend if your shopping State St great place to catch lunch or dinner.
Need to do it once, food was at best adequate- but the beauty and atmosphere are part of a Chicago icon.
