We thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant! We made OpenTable reservations the night before. We were in Chicago for a conference and wanted to eat lunch here-but we knew we would not be able to stay longer than a little over an hour! We were greeted immediately and everyone was so kind. We chose a window seat, but next time would like to eat by the fountain!
The server started out a bit slow and sped up the process after I told him that we were in a hurry. He was great!
We ordered the Mrs. Hering's Chicken pot pie and green salad. We had our meal 10 minutes after ordering. I was impressed. Delicious and served very hot!
We each had two wonderful tasting desserts, a pineapple coconut cake and the Frango mint chocolate ice cream pie-these desserts definitely met our sweet expectations.
I definitely recommend this restaurant and cannot wait to return. We were told by numerous people that around the Christmas holidays, it is a wonderful time to dine there because of all the decorations!
Husband and I had theater tickets and thought we would give the Walnut room a try. I am gluten free, dairy free, and egg free. They have a special gluten free menu with quite a few options. My husband and I both had the salmon. Mine from the GF menu, his from the regular menu. They were both really good. Also had a bottle of wine. Thought everything was reasonably priced and the room was beautiful. Would highly recommend.
I went to the Walnut Room before going to a show at the Oriental Theater. It was beyond my expectation. Great service. Great food. Very clean. My only disappointment was that the bar wasn’t top notch.
A restaurant and menu with long, rich history. Hadn't been in quite a while and was glad to be there. Enjoyed my traditional favorite -- only since I was a very young child -- Field Special salad/sandwich of sliced turkey on slice of pumpernickel, with lettuce, Swiss cheese, 1000 Island dressing and bacon. Filled all my spots: appetite and emotional. Friend enjoyed a cheeseburger, substituting Swiss cheese instead of cheddar. The accompanying french fries were exceptional. Next time, ordering lighter so as to have dessert; many items called my name and invoked memory.
Food was delicious and service was good. Our experience was diminished by Macy’s management having a meeting/dinner. They were entitled, demanding and very rude to staff.
Simple but great tasting food at a very affordable price for the Loop.
Nice to know the signature chicken pot is still delicious!
Wonderful and lovely experience, celebrated anniversary.
Tired workers and menu
We enjoyed our dinner. The atmosphere was nice. The food was good and affordable for Chicago. The waitstaff seemed like they could have used additional help. I noticed they could have cleaned a bit better around the restaurant but overall a good experience.
I go to the Walnut Room two times a year: at Christmas to sit by the giant tree and during the Flower Show. This year, the flower show was all over the store versus in the special event space, so the Walnut Room was very decked out. The food is just ok, but I like the old-school ambiance. The staff is nice.
Going to the Walnut Room brought back happy memories of childhood when my mother and I would visit once a year at Christmas time to see Santa. I remember fondly the snow man sundaes we had with our meal. Of course, the Marshall Fields on State Street was home to the real Santa and all the others in the metropolitan area were labelled helpers. Who could go wrong visiting an iconic setting such as the Walnut Room? The pot pie was delicious. The coffee only so-so, but then again I'm spoiled because I usually drink Starbucks. The service was OK, but I think it was more of a case of the waiter having too many tables than unconscionable service. All in all I enjoyed the Walnut Room and I look forward to visiting again sometime in the future.
A delightful meal in a lovely atmosphere. The Walnut room is always a treat!
This was a pre-theatre group .Of the seven diners we had five selections .. all were delicious, ,attractive presentations and promptly served. Wait staff was friendly, courteous and attentive. An excellent choice for pre-theater dining. But the room was COLD .. I mean temperature=wise. And the whole store was COLD. L. Not very conducive to visiting or shopping. We we were glad to get outside where it was cold .. but warmer than inside.
Food was delicious and the ambiance was great. Great place for a quiet conversation
Food is always good...
Great restaurant. Family classic.
The service was super slow because they didn’t have enough waiters and the orders had serious mistakes. The place is pretty but rundown as is the entire store and the food is only average. Overall a disappointing experience.
Limited and boring selection of food for lunch, dull atmosphere even with the flower arrangements, bad lighting and the AC was on despite it being freezing outside. First and last visit.
Meeting a friend for an Easter weekend lunch, the Walnut Room made years of our happiest memories come flooding back. Of course, to us the Walnut Room will always be part of our love for Marshall Fields.
The service was excellent and all the reception people were friendly and delightful. The food was very good. We enjoyed the crab cake special served with whipped potatoes that were yummy and an extremely generous green salad. The key lime pie was very pleasant but did not seem to be a “signature” dessert - I think the most popular dessert is the Frango mint chocolate pie.
The Walnut decor is traditional and beautifully maintained. There are tables that overlook State Street and also Washington if you want to see traditional as well as contemporary Chicago.
The memories this meal brought back for us made everything extra special.
We have been coming to the Walnut Room since I was a little girl and it is (or was) my mom’s favorite restaurant experience in Chicago. It has clearly changed quite a bit - Food was very obviously pre-portioned / frozen pieces of salmon, polenta was greasy and soupy and inedible, and cocktails so poor that they had to be sent back twice. Our server was nice but just didn’t get what speedy, good service is unfortunately, and while she was very aware it was my mom’s 69th birthday that day, did nothing to adjust the bill after such a poor experience or even offer a birthday dessert complimentary (unlike every other Chicago restaurant we’ve been to which puts their patrons first on special occasions).
My mother left embarrassed because she had wanted to go here so badly because of the fond memories, and I left angry because of the inedible food and poor service.
After years of loving our experiences here, we will not be back.
We were fortunate to be there for the flower show and live entertainment. Very enjoyable!
Historic building great to see the detail of work, not kept clean. Food was really poor quality and presentation. I know that I will not go back.
Glad I ignored negative reviews. We were here for the Garden Show and everything was fabulous!
Service is slow. This has been a historical problem for the WR. No different today than years ago on this score.
The food and ambiance was great. The service was terrible. The waiter didn’t collect the menus after we ordered. Where are we Applebee’s? Didn’t bring milk for my tea. My mom needed butter took forever to return to the table. Then to pay he took so long we had to ask another server to cash us out.
Food was great and it is a memory maker for my family. We go at Christmas and other holidays.
Loved the elegant decor! The service was excellent and our food was delicious. Prices were reasonable for lunch in downtown Chicago.
Took our Granddaughter there for lunch after visiting the Garden show presented
by Macy's. Setting was elegant and a beautiful reminder of the décor of the past.
The wait would have been 90 minutes. Fortunately, we had made reservations.
The food was good and so was the service.
I had the salmon and asparagus risotto. The salmon was dry, I have had better at Longhorn steak house and the risotto was salty with a strong fennel aftertaste. My sister had the Asiago crusted chicken and gives it five stars.
For the price, expectation and reputation the food at the Walnut Room was below par.
This worked great for luncheon before theater matinee. The timing also allowed us to enjoy the Flower Show. My entree was listed with asparagus so I expected a small serving of a vegetable but this had 2 smaller than julienne strips of overcooked asparagus on top of the risotto. The salmon was excellent. The risotto was creamier than I prefer. The chocolate mint ice cream pie was also excellent.
I have never eaten here before so I was excited and looking forward to a really great experience but that's not what happened....first we got there 15 mins early then our 2pm reservations and was seated way in the back near the rest rooms, then waited 30 mins to even get anybody to take our orders and we had to stop a server to get a server, that should not have happened. Then once our order was taken our food arrived 5 mins to being an hour. That was unacceptable. By that time I and my mom were ready to leave, no one should wait that long for a hamburger and meat loaf. My mom was here years ago for their buffet and everything was great but this day was not nice at all.
We attended the annual Macy's flower show, and had a delightful lunch at the historic Walnut Room. The French onion soup and the chicken pot pie was excellent. Despite several large groups being served, our service for two was very good. The view of the city and the central fountain and flowers create a beautiful setting. We didn't realize that the restaurant is open for dinner as well. We will definitely be back and will request a window table so we can watch the city action!
Service was unbelievably slow. We entered around 1:15 and did not leave until 235. Other tables which sat after us, left before us.
Terrible never going back
We dined here on a Saturday night and were very disappointed with the experience. The wait staff was very disorganized. It took a long time to get our order taken and the food took a very long time. There was no salt and pepper on the table, the waiters were unaware of the specials, the wait staff seemed unsure of who was supposed to be our waiter and there was much discussion among the wait staff about who was supposed to cover the areas. This loud discussion went on for a very long time within the dining room. The supervision of the entire wait staff was very poor. There was a buffet set up, and I think they were more concerned about a large party coming in than they were in serving any other guests. A table next to us had salads for their meal, and it took nearly an hour to receive them. I cannot recommend this restaurant at this time which is very disappointing since I know that this restaurant has been in the area for many, many years. I have fond memories of going here during Christmas as a child so it was very disappointing to have such a poor experience.
Great food, attentive wait staff and managerial personnel.
We visited The Walnut Room before attending a play in Chicago. The location was convenient to the theater district, the food was very good, and our server was Great. It was a beautiful day in Chicago and the play was also great. Thanks
I like to visit the Walnut room when I have theater. It is close to three of the venues that produce the shows. The food and service are great and a little shopping is always fun.
My sister and nieces where in town and we were going to a play. I thought it would be a nice to take them to the beautiful Walnut Room. We enjoyed the dinner! I raved about the Chicken Pot as, it is my choice for dinner every time I go. The three of us totally enjoyed it! I have tried other things but this is my go too! A delicious entree on a cool afternoon. The hot, delicious pot pie with a flaky, crispy crust loaded with a delicious creamy filling, lots of white meat and veggies! A true delight! My niece order a pretzel roll burger and loved it. The French fries where crispy and hot. And served with a side of aioli sauce. The Walnut Room has great service is quaint, quiet and beautifully decorated with a lovely staff. A super place to enjoy a fantastic meal, whether it be lunch or dinner. One of my favorite Loop restaurants!
