The Velvet Glove - The Fairmont Winnipeg Ratings and Reviews
The ingredients were fresh and of high quality. I took my adult children out for a morning breakfast while travelling and they were very impressed with your steak and eggs and my eggs benedict was lovely with fresh salmon and rye bread. The music was also very peaceful and really set the tone for the rest of the day. Thanks!
My husband and I were celebrating our 5th anniversary.
I ordered the lamb sirloin, and he had the aged rib eye.
We didn't order an appetizer. However we received a bread basket with butter & hummus, and the amuse boucher (which was bison tataki).
My husband who isn't really a fancy food guy, really enjoyed the bison. As did I. In a little tomato, absolutely delicious.
When our meals came, they were beautiful. Absolutely delicious & good portion sizes! Everything tasted phenomenal!
We ordered the deconstructed cheesecake for dessert. It was delicious & they surprised us by writing happy anniversary around the plate in chocolate.
Our server was soft spoken, polite, and absolutely one of the most welcoming servers I've ever experienced. Not once did I feel rushed, or made to wait, or anything but absolutely content to be at the velvet glove taken care of by him.
I would go again & again!
I enjoy the quiet ambiance in a very cozy and comfortable setting. The service is excellent and the staff is always very attentive and engaged. The food has always been excellent with ample portions and the prices are very reasonable for what you`re getting. First class dining!!
The food was quite disappointing. Husband liked the amuse Bouche of salmon tartare, but I don't eat fish so I got 3 cherry tomatoes. Cesar salad is much better with romaine than kale. The chowder was good. The boar chop was only okay...and the sweet potato purée was just too sweet. There was nothing to temper it. The brined chicken tasted a little odd and was dry. There were way too many bitter greens on my plate. Just overall a bit disappointing. The best thing about the meal was the desserts.
It has been many years since I last dined at Velvet Glove. We were here this time for the Mother's Day Brunch. Compared to another Winnipeg downtown hotel brunch, there were probably fewer options, but the quality and flavour of what was available was much higher. Of note were the house-cured gravlax, the roast beef, and the crepes at the flambe station, but everything we tried was delicious. We were also gifted with bath salts made by the staff at the hotel - a lovely gesture which was never replicated during our many brunches at the other famous city hotel brunch.
We're planning to return for the brunch next year, but will return earlier for another meal!
Visited VG for Mother's Day brunch. It was amazing and in comparison to other brunches in the city and around the world, this sticks out as my favorite.
The food was delicious with a great variety of food and flavours. There was also a mimosa station at the bar with a few different types, they were all well thought out with fun garnishes.
The buffet was great because they didn't overcrowd the reservations. They also placed different stations around the restaurant in different rooms, so people were never bunching up or standing in line for food.
The service was the best. Super friendly waiters, chefs and bartenders. They all appeared to be enjoying what they were doing and were welcoming, positive and attentive. Reservations were easy and confirm a day prior over the phone along with details about the brunch, which was appreciated.
As it was Mother's Day, they made it extra special by having gifts for the moms as well as photo station to have your photo taken with your mom or group and emailed to you.
Wow, I will be back at every opportunity!
I took an uncle out to brunch on the last time slot available. We got there and the restaurant had a sign up that it was closed for a private function.
The hotel had all breakfast/brunch customers in the lounge area. It wasn't quite the atmosphere of the restaurant, but the server and kitchen were perfect. The food made up for what the lounge lacked :-)
In the end my uncle thoroughly enjoyed his brunch. Thank you to the staff for taking good care of us in less than ideal conditions.
This was my fourth visit in the span of 35 years. The restaurant used to be a bit smaller with a touch of interior design and flare. The seating, tables, linen and flatware have all the accents of a high end restaurant. I found the walls to be bare and lacking coziness. It almost appears as they are tearing down and closing. The menu was interesting, however it lacked some home grown elements (Manitoba) such as pickerel, bison, wild-rice and such. Manitoba is known for growing "pulses" yet there was no evidence of them being present in the various dishes. The Wine List was found to be lacking. Coffee was served luke-warm and not to Standard for freshness. They also need to feature "fruit" elements and desserts (e.g. fruit tarts, fruit tortes)
This was the 2nd New Year's Eve we dined here (the 1st being 4 years ago). The service, from the moment the doormen took our car, to when we finished eating, was impeccable. The atmosphere felt like we had gone back to another era. It was mesmerising to watch servers glide among the tables, attending to the people dining without interfering with their meals and conversations. A fireplace in the middle back wall gave a glow over the old world ambiance.
Four years ago we had a lovely evening from 8pm until midnight without ever feeling like we we being rushed out for the next set of diners. If anything we wondered why there weren't more people. This year it was much more energetic but still in a quiet way. At least 2/3s of the tables were full but we never had an issue with feeling crowded, nor rushed.
The food was a delight to the eyes and the tastebuds. The only minor issue was a fixed New Year's Eve menu. It was very well done but if you were not a fan of the menu there were no alternatives. This obviously a good way to ensure consistency with the food but make sure you are happy with the menu. We didn't realize this when we went but we adapted to the situation :-)
Finally, if you have the option for wine pairing you should do it. It was an enjoyable complement to the food that removed the worry of picking the right wine for the whole meal.
This was not inexpensive outing, and we naively went thinking the whole menu was available. However, in the end I was more than content with the evening and how it unfolded. Thank you Fairmont for a wonderful restaurant and a wonderful New Year's Eve.
A few bones were found in the turkey stuffing. One was approximately 1-in in length. Mentioned it to the waiter. who brought it to the kitchen. The waiter was over solicitous. He mentioned that he noticed that I did not eat much dessert but if I wanted, I could bring some home because they throw it out. I appreciated the idea of not wasting food, but having someone watching me eat is a little unnerving. Thank you.
A wonderful birthday dinner with excellent food, both in portion and taste, and elegant atmosphere. I think our waitress forgot about us however, since we were kept waiting for about a half hour for dessert, but it's understandable since the restaurant was full.
This was our third visit at the VG for dinner and as always fantastic! The service was great our waitress was wonderful and helpful. We have come with different guest each time and they have all very much loved the experience. We have not been disappointed! Keep up the great service and fabulous food!
Having not been to the Velvet Glove in a number of years we saw a Groupon for it and thought that we would give it another whirl. The first thing that struck us was the change in the menu. It was very limited and not terribly inspiring. The service started out fine and I don't know if it declined because they got busy or if it was because we mentioned that we had a Groupon but we were all but ignored once we placed our orders. We each had two cocktails and our bill for drinks plus taxes on the food was over $80.00 not including tip. The food was fine, nothing wrong with it but certainly not something memorable that you would mention to friends or that would guarantee a return visit. I doubt that we would return again even with a Groupon.
