The Union Canal House Ratings and Reviews
Beautiful, historical restaurant, but the owners left staff and a fill-in manager in a terrible position. Horribly understaffed. The restaurant was not busy when we arrived at 8:00 pm, yet we waited 10+ minutes for the server to come to our table. Even before greeting us, his first words were "just to let you know, the restaurant will be closed next week, and the owners didn't order inventory, so we're out of a lot of stuff on the menu." He then proceeded to ramble off a list of things they didn't have. Due to the late hour and us being from out of town, we chose to stay and ordered something that WAS still available. When our drinks arrived (server was also the bartender, so he was pulled away many times from our table), we asked for some bread (there were bread plates on the table), he said "oh, we've been out of bread all day." We overheard the guests at the table next to us trying to order, they settled on a steak after ordering several other entrees that were unavailable, only to be told the restaurant is out of mushrooms and the vegetables that come with it. Just a steak on a plate! I ordered vegetable pasta. It was supposed to contain all types of vegetables. It arrived as a blob of under cooked pasta in a lump. The only "vegetable" in it was roasted tomatoes, which were charred black and inedible. I asked for Parmesan cheese, but they were out of that, too. The server seemed to find amusement in that, which caused me to ask to see the manager. The stand-in manager came to our table and was very apologetic. Said she was filling in for her friends who own the restaurant. She did a great job trying to repair the issues and sent us away with a comp dessert, but this is a restaurant that needs a lot help. Disappointing.
The food was quite expensive and the quality was comparable to Texas Road house at best. This used to be a high caliber restaurant, but not any longer. The menu is limited and my drink from the bar was awful. I will never return and waste valuable money. I will never recommend this restaurant to anyone. They need to return to their service levels of 2015-2016.
I attend a conference in Hershey every year in August, and I always have dinner here one night!
Once again I was not disappointed!
Just a mile from Hershey Park, but several centuries away in history and ambiance, Deborah and William Albright, along with there son, Chef Alex, provide a fabulous dining experience!!!
The food was over priced. I got a half a rack of house-smoked ribs. They were not cooked completely. The we're not falling off the bone. They were tough. I told our server. She said that's how they are prepared so that when they are re-heated, they're not over cooked. They certainly were not over cooked. I ate less than one third of the ribs. There was only one choice of vegetable - asparagus and carrots. They were actually pretty good, but not have been my choice if there had been anything else. The baked potato was nearly room temperature. Our meal for two was $75.00. And, I left hungry. I don't intend to go back.
The Union Canal House was very enjoyable. The service was great, the food was delicious. The atmosphere was a charming change of pace. It has a great history and the décor to match. No screens hanging all over the place. We had seats next to the fireplace. It was a very nice dinner.
My husband and I visited the Union Canal House for a special date night-while the first table we were sat at was located near a larger very loud table; upon request the hostess immediately moved us to a table in a different room which was much quieter. The food was excellent (my husband had the delmonico and I had the chicken marsala)-both were cooked perfectly. Unfortunately, the service was slow-we didn't mind much since it was a night out for us, but getting a drink refill took a long time. We will definitely visit again when we are in the area.
Food and ambiance were great. However, it took forever to get served. The wait staff was very pleasant and professional but were grossly over worked. It appears that management didn't have a grasp on the demand on Valentines Day. They should have known better and had more staff. We waited 30 minutes to get a glass of water and another 10 to place our orders. The bar tender didn't know how to make a Rusty Nail.
I used to like everything about this place but I was disappointed with them for Valentine's Day. The service was poor to say the least. It was a special occasion and we had reservations, they should have been prepared. The food was still good and once we got our order in, the kitchen was efficient. There were many things about the service that I was disappointed with but I will leave it at this. If I was trying to impress somebody that night, I would have been furious. I will certainly give them another chance but it won't be anytime soon.
Server and owner were very nice and friendly. I was there with my grandsons and family. The boys were very happy with their meals (cheeseburger and kids fillet). Barbara, the owner took us on a tour of the "tunnel" which traces back to the Revolutionary War. It was very interesting for me and my grandsons.
Very nice of her to take the time to do this.
The Union Canal House made New Years Eve quite special. Upon arrival we were greeted with a complimentary glass of good champagne and it only got better from there. There was a special prix fixe menu that night. We ordered the wild mushroom soup to start which was divine. Very bold mushroom flavor not muted by a lot of dairy. My lobster tails were quite good as were my companion's scallops and crab cake. A nice way to start a more sedate holiday celebration.
My wife and 2 son's stopped by on Friday night after finding positive reviews on Opentable.
Unfortunately, not one of them lived up to their rating. Both the service and food quality were poor.
My son and I ordered the calamari appetizers. After one bite each we sent it back. The calamari was definitely frozen, previously, and was reheated to the point were they became inedible. Both of us couldn't chew up the dried out rings.
We had to ask 2 different people for bread because the waitress never came to check on us, plus my son and I were hungry because couldn't eat the calamari.
I ordered the rib eye steak and the entire outer edge of the steak was burnt to a crisp. The middle, however, was perfectly cooked. $38 for a steak that I could only eat a 75% of doesn't seem very fair. The sides that came with the steak were unseasoned and, again, the waitress never came by to check on us, so explaining my dissatisfaction was next to impossible.
I'm sorry, but I do not recommend this place.
While I noted service as poor, our actual server was fine. MANAGEMENT is arrogant and rude to customers! It's too bad because the proximity to the arena makes it a nice choice and the food was fine. But honestly, I would walk around hungry before giving them my business again.
