Family owned for over forty years, the Union Canal House continues to set the standard for fine cuisine, service and hospitality. Since 1751, The rural hideaway has offered tempting food and refreshing drinks. Nestled in the heart of the village of Union Deposit, Hershey, Pa., soldiers from the French, Indian and Revolutionary Wars were the restaurant"s first patrons. The Union Canal House features a succulent selection of fresh fish prepared daily and the highest quality steaks. Patrons can enjoy classic entrees such as Veal Marsala, Long Island Duckling, Barramundi and of course our signature Crab Cakes made with 100% fresh lump crabmeat. Soup was luke warm at best- mashed potatoes were dry and barely warm- broccoli was cold- delmonico steak was delicious and cooked perfectly- waiter was very nice but totally overwhelmed - waters- drinks-rolls took a long time to arrive and did not get refilled until we were leaving- all in all for a meal with tip costing $160 it was a huge disappointment

Overall the Valentine’s Day experience was a little lack luster. My wife and I have visited this particular place for this same event several times. Our meals had virtually no seasoning , and the server seemed very flustered moving around the dining room.

We were given the special menu, but people right near us were ordering off the regular menu, which had we known was even an option, we may have selected.

Not a bad night out, but for a “special occasion” night, it was a little disappointing.

Went there for Valentine’s Day. Was unaware there was a set menu. Wasn’t on there website nor was it indicated when they texted and asked me to confirm my reservation. All menu choices were same price but I don’t feel lobster tail and chicken Marsala Gabe the same value. Opted for filet mignon. Asked for it medium. Others in party asked for well. All came rare. All options came with same sides. No options to accommodate food allergies, etc. Underwhelmed for the price.

Cozy authentic building decent atmosphere Vday maybe not good choice to dine menu limited couple items and skimpy portioned salad you could count the few greens on plate , entre's returned poor cook staff as several tables also returned. Ours medium well was burnt crispy edge n red in middle. Hostess seemed inexperienced to greet and seat. Bartender unable to pour wine in a glass used a container n repoured. Unsanitary to say the least Courteous sweet waitress not her fault. Feel like this cozy corner could be improved!

We saw the web site for Union Canal House on the Web. Looked interesting, some place we'd like to have dinner after a day in Hershey, Pa. Naturally, we looked at the reviews from other diners that ranged from excellent to "never go here." Benefit of the doubt, we chose to give it a try on a Friday evening. So after 10 minutes in line and 20 minutes seated at the table (so now we have 30 minutes invested in this place and still have yet to see a server), the owner called to us from across the room, "Has anyone been there yet?" No, and at that point, we walked out. Seems as though the bad reviews are the correct reviews. We will not be back.

Note to the owners. Beautiful restaurant. Nicely decorated, full of history. We suggest that you:
1. Hire hostesses that escort the diners to their tables while the owner/maitre-d greets your guests and schedules the tables. One person cannot greet people, seat people, prepare the tables, bring water to the diners and take food orders while the phone rings and there is a waiting room full of customers that have reservations.
2. Make sure that when you have customers with reservations, that you have a table reserved for them so there is no problem with seating.
3. Hire additional servers. A room with 8-10 tables needs at least 2 servers and one busboy. You are severely under-staffed. People that dine out expect prompt service and good food at reasonable prices. Restaurants that fail to provide all three will soon be out of business.

We had attended an afternoon performance at the Giant Center and were looking for a nice place to have dinner afterwards. The Canal House is nearby and sounded great, so we booked our reservation. We're glad we did. It's a charming, older place with lots of character. Nice menu with lots of choices, and our food was very good. It was a Friday evening so the place was very busy, but our server was very nice and helpful. The bar choices are good with a nice wine selection, craft beers and an offering of special cocktails. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming and we would go back if we're in the Hershey area again.

Excellent place to go we go to Hershey at Christmas every year and go to this restaurant it has excellent food and service the cocktails are wonderful too. We have been coming her for the past 10 years my son loves this restaurant and in fact sometimes we make the 2 plus hour drive from NYC to come to eat. The steaks are amazing. The service and food are five star better then some restaurants I have eaten at in Manhattan.

It had been a while since my wife and I had dined there and we were not disappointed. The service and food were very good. We both had steaks that were excellent. The only negative, if you can call it that, is that the portion sizes were a little large so we didn't have an appetite for dessert.

It had been a few years since my last time at the Canal House so I was surprised to see that it was much more of a casual dining experience than I remember, which was ok. Food was good and the service was not bad considering we had a fairly new waiter. He was very friendly and accommodating but, after dinner, we were expecting dessert menus but he presented us with our checks. He quickly apologized and took our selections for dessert and coffee, peanut butter pie was very good. It was a cold evening, temps outside in the low 40's, so the room we were in was very cold. We all left our jackets on throughout the entire meal. I don't think they had their heat turned on yet.

We had a great experience at Union Canal House. The food was great. If any downside, it was the noise level. Whew! Maybe it was just this particular evening.

We had dinner there while we were attending the fall Hershey car and swap meet. We had the Delmonico steaks and the Lobster dinner and Blackened Salmon dinner. They were perfect. And also had their Crab soup which was great.

This place changed hands a couple of years ago. Since then it has done nothing but go downhill. I would not recommend it to anyone. The new owner knows nothing about the business.
