Made a last minute reservation for Valentine's Day and we had a great time! Food was outstanding and fairly priced. I had the Lamb Bolognese with house-made pasta. Cooked perfectly. My girlfriend had the Short Ribs, which I regret not getting myself because they were so damn good! We did not order cocktails, but the list of house cocktails were intriguing. They also had a great selection of craft beer and wine. Though it was a busy Valentine's Day for the staff, our server was great. He made great recommendations and was pleasant, not rushing us whatsoever. I worked in food service for about 10 years and, in my opinion, they could have used one more server that night to improve the service. The chef was running food at one point, indicating they could have used one more set of hands. Not a big deal to us, but worth mentioning. Overall, I highly recommend this place and hope to go back soon!
Great food, especially the wedge salad!
Haven’t been in a while, bit still one of my favorite places, food is great, service is always stellar.
What struck me first is the spaciousness for such a small room. The aren't many tables (so make a reservation if you're going during peak hours) but they're not piled on top of each other. And even when the room was full the noise level was surprisingly low. The menu is typically creative of what you find in restaurants these days (that's a good thing) and well executed.
The tavern was a wonderful spot for New Years Eve. Good food in a quiet, relaxed atmosphere.
This restaurant was such a cute spot in the neighborhood. A great beer and cocktail menu with excellent food and service. Would highly recommend checking it out!
Fabulous food, stunning drinks, and great, personalized service in an off-the-beaten-path underground lair. Hard to peg the vibe, maybe upscale dive bar, and it was loud, with a piano wafting in from the ground floor restaurant above, rock Muzak over the speakers, and the Eggs game on the Telly. They were happy to turn one of these off for us as it was getting cacophonic in our corner.
I can’t overstate how good the food was. Hard to screw up a burger but also hard to make really good ones. These were excellent. Best boogies in philly so far for us. They grind the meat there, as one should, but most do not.
The chix tenders with panko and hard cheese (Asiago? I forget) were best I ever had.
Did not try dessert, but will next time.
Great food, great service, great value.
Just a quick walk from the Hilton/doubletree, that was nice. The restaurant itself is downstairs and as others have mentioned very small but we liked the intimate vibe. Unique cocktails and appetizers. My only complaint is several of our meals were over salted. They had a stroganoff special and the meat was very tender and the flavor was excellent, just too much salt. Same for the lamb dish. Burgers and chicken did not seem to have this issue. I would still go back and maybe mention “light salt” to be safe.
Celebrating my recovering of bilateral lung transplant in July. It was my first time out in six years. I danced till I fell literally fell on the dance floor. Great group of people friendly and the piano was heavenly.
Great food! Excellent service! Will definitely be back!
First timer but will definitely return. Great history, great food, great service. Definitely an exceptional value.
Excellent food at a very reasonable price. Would recommend before a show on Broad Street only a short walk away.
Tavern is way better than average bar food -- a really good burger and fries but also porchetta, lamb bolognese, grilled cheese and tomato soup, and many other things. The staff is great. The place is consistently excellent.
The only issue I had with the Tavern is that it was difficult to find. Thankfully, one of my friends had been there previously and knew the way. I rather think that is by design, as it is a small space and allows the server to provide excellent service which would not be possible with a large crowd. My choice of cocktail was the Tavern Old Fashioned: a little sweet for my taste, but made with quality ingredients. The Tavern features small plates (my friends and I had sweet potato gnocchi, beet salad, a delicious wedge salad, and pan seared scallops), sandwiches and big plates (I had the lamb Bolognese with house-made fettuccine, mint and Parmesan). I would definitely go again next time I'm in Center City Philadelphia for a show.
If you don’t order the sweet potato gnocchi, you’re missing out! The wedge salad, pickle chips and deviled eggs were outstanding.
The food and service was very good. $3.50 for a cup of coffee was a bit much.
I've eaten here a bunch of times and the food has gotten progressively worse. And this time the drinks weren't so great. And finally, the regular waiter is just plain nasty. He always seems overwhelmed and just isn't nice. Probably last dinner here for a while.
Food is fantastic. Get the pork sammich.
Food was delicious (I had the Porchetta). Garlic fries were amazing, as well as the fried pickles. I ordered a drink that ended up being a little too strong, but I followed that up with 2 beers from their selection and was more than satisfied.
When the staff of a restaurant you've never visited, in a strange you're not familiar with, welcomes you like an old and valued friend, you know you're in the right place. The service was warm and inviting without every being cloying or intrusive. My meal was fine (I had the vegetarian edamame-black bean burger - a tad mushy but tasty - with delicious garlic fries) but the comfortable atmosphere as I dined alone between shows at the Opera Philadelphia Festival was the best part.
Very pleasant restaurant. Food is good. Beer is very good. Service was great. Quiet space for meeting with friends. Nothing to go out of the way for, but a reasonably-priced, solid choice for getting together with friends.
The service was good and the food really, really delicious. I had the mushroom & black bean burger; it was more than I'd usually pay for a burger and we'll worth it. It was really convenient to grab a bit to eat here then head upstairs to the piano bar, where I the locals to be very friendly and welcoming of myself and the other travellers I was with. I highly recommend this place.
Quaint and secluded which was good for dinner conversation. Later on we participated in a lively Quizzo game which was a fun surprise and a great way to wrap up the evening.
Great food and great service!! The vegetarian burger and grilled asparagus were delicious!
Great service for our daughter's 21 birthday! The waiter was kind enough to buy her her first drink! We had a great meal in a quiet atmosphere with our family, decent food. The cheese board was the hit as the appetizer. We quickly visited the piano bar upstairs and that was a hit as well. We would definitely return! Everyone was so friendly to our family and newly 21 year old!
Went here for my dad's birthday because he lives in the neighborhood. It is comfortable, cozy and the food (sophisticated comfort food) is out of this world! We had the small plate short ribs w/grits and a wedge salad and my sister had a big pork chop. Divine! We had two orders of the popovers with butter and jam--I'd go back for those alone.
The dining room is small (think cruise ship coffee shop) and conveniently adjacent to the bar. The service was wonderful (our server Michael, who also handled the reservation when I called and put a Birthday candle in some vanilla ice cream for my dad) was warm, friendly, thoughtful and seemed genuinely glad that we had come there.
Tavern was a five star experience at a neighborhood gem.
I live in ny was visiting philly for the flower show. Went there with friends on a prior visit. Just love it never disappointed with the Tavern.
Limited menu but tasty! Great for before theatre!
Always enjoy but the menu needs a refresh and more dinner entrée choices ... have come to Tavern for years but suggest it is time to step it up a notch.
Do not get me wrong was great but just need a fresh menu.
