The Tailor and the Cook Ratings and Reviews
My experience was wonderful! I had the duck, it was perfectly cooked served with a butternut squash bread pudding and sauteed kale. All entrees come with very crusty nice bread and a salad of local greens with a very good house dressing. The wine, on the lower end of their price range, was very good. The service was excellent. We were too full for dessert. I will be returning to the Trailer and Cook again!! (This was my third visit!)
We had a pre-Theatre dinner with another couple that was outstanding. Our server was excellent. The food (chef's tasting salmon; flank steak and petite filet) were cooked to perfection. The dinner wine suggestion was spot on. I would recommend this venue to everyone.
Tailor and the Cook stands out from all of its peers in the Utica area. The food is not simply great, it is sublime. Attentive staff, nice wine and liquor menu, locally sourced ingredients, and outstanding cuisine make this my favorite place in the areafor a fine dining experience.
Tim Hardiman has established a "go to" place for special occasions and business meals. The farm to table theme is outstanding, and the food matches the 4 seasons in Upstate New York. We always go there for birthdays and anniversaries with our friends and family.
Wonderful dining experience from start to finish! We were seated on time. Beautiful ambience. We loved the unique salads and appetizers. Everything was just the right portion sized. Simple yet elegant decor and lighting. I chose the vegetable curry which was so fresh and yummy! My husband had the venison which he said was cooked perfectly. We definitely recommend and will be back soon.
Needed a place to sit at the bar, have a couple of drinks and talk with staff (dining alone). Starting with a nice glass of wine.... lots of conversation in trying to pick a good one from staff. My main was the hanger steak. The mushrooms and sides were delicious. The steak although well cooked was hidden in under greens and mushrooms. Really just six bites. This is a cheap cut of steak and at $30 usd + one would think you could get 4 ounces of steak.
The next glass of wine and desert wine rounded out the evening.
Ambiance was missing something.... the room felt flat.
We love this place every time. We’ve tried everything from the vegan risotto to the fish and pork rib. We have never been disappointed. Always always always start with the local cheese board and a glass of wine. The Gibson is really great if you like a twist on a dirty martini. If you want a special date night or you have guests to impress this is your place. Of course we just like to go for no reason at all except not to dirty the dishes at home :)
Farm to table. Presentation is amazing. Each dish is accompanied by an explanation of what it is and what farm it is from. They have very unique dishes and desserts. Mixologist at the bar!!! Cocktails are fabulous and made with care and creativity. Service was impeccable! This is a restaurant and stafff that care about the food they are serving and truly make this a dining experienced! Very impressed!
I'm a college student in the Utica area. I'd never been to The Tailor and the Cook before, but I'd often heard the locals speaking incredibly highly of it. I must say, after experiencing it first hand, I now fully understand what all the hype is about. The building itself is a circa early 1900s former tailor shop, so it has a rustic and quaint charm about it. The staff were very friendly and attentive and also very knowledgeable; all of my and my friend's questions regarding the food and beverage options were answered to our utmost satisfaction. The food itself was out of this world; you can definitely taste the difference in freshness because they use only locally-grown ingredients in all of their dishes. My biggest criticism is I felt the portion sizes were small. I must admit, I'm biased because I'm a college student (i.e., my financial situation is "non-ideal" to say the very least), but when I'm paying $30-40 for an entree, I'm expecting a generous amount of food. However, overall, I feel that my dining experience at The Tailor and the Cook was outstanding. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who's visiting the Utica area and/or anyone who lives in the area who's never been there before.
It was a party of three for a business meeting. I indicated in advance that I wanted a relatively quiet table, and the host made this arrangement. When we were seated, the waiter indicated that he was aware that this was a business meeting and that we needed to talk, so he told us that he would make interruptions as quick and unobtrusive as possible. The service was great. We all had the tasting menu.. Excellent meal. I've been to Tailor & the Cook many times for different occasions. It's a sure thing.
We’ve enjoyed many meals here but this was my favorite. The staff and the meal exceeded our already high expectations. From the perfectly seasoned vegetable appetizer through the beautifully presented entree to the finale of a surprising carrot sorbet we enjoyed a memorable anniversary celebration.
Amazing!!!! Yes it's a little more expensive, Yes it's not ordinary...and Yes you must try it!! Very welcoming and warm. Not too big and great attention to detail when it comes to serving. Food is fresh, exquisite and mouth watering. It awakens your taste buds. I was very pleased with my appetizer, dinner and dessert. The staff are professional, knowledgeable and friendly. Want something a little different, romantic maybe....stop in and try this place and be sure to say hi to Jarod!!!
Overall service was excellent - very attentive. Personally, I prefer the atmosphere to be a little less serious, but I understand. It was very professional. My entrée of striped bass with collared greens and sweet potato fritters was so incredibly delicious. It melted. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to know that their dinner is organic and genuine.
Had a good dinner experience even though it was very busy and my filet was cold I still ate it it was delicious although I regret not asking them to heat it up for me but the wait was so long I didn’t want to wait any longer I would’ve ordered desserts but my husband was frustrated with the wait times would love to return however can’t say the same about my husband. I am from Puerto Rico and I have a deep love for fine cuisine due to my Islands food variety and amazing Chefs,I believe the tailor and cook live up to its reputation and it’s name
A bit of a nondescript storefront from the outside but a totally quality experience once inside. Excellent service and mostly locally sourced quality food. I made the trip from Syracuse to Utica the third time to visit them again (via Amtrak). I would call this fine dining without the snobbishness that can sometimes occur. They serve the traditional West End Brewing Company Utica Club beer. They are a short walk from Utica Union Station through mostly deserted streets and are in the historic Bagg's Square district.
First visit. A great fine dinning inspired farm to table neighborhood gem, in the midst of Utica NY. Casual , personable, fun & a little funky. Service was spot on, always there and never intrusive. Food was taste, innovative, and high quality. A highly enjoyable experience.
Dinner was delicious and quite creative with specialty items. Only complaint was wine glass only partially filled. Would have liked a full glass for the price. Other than that, which may be a common practice in pricier restaurants, it lived up to expectation and would definitely return!
We had a terrific meal, starting with an amuse bouche of peeled radish holding capers in cream. We shared our entrees because we both wanted both! They were an extremely tender filet mignon with crisply roasted potatoes and carrots and a homemade spaghetti (not too many noodles, an excellent amount) with shrimp, mussels, and clams, topped with a few strands of roasted fennel. Desserts looked great but we were too full. A great find!
An unexpected find in Utica. Nice people dedicated to local ingredients and quality fare. Our dishes could have been more creative and better prepared but after being spoiled by Los Angeles cuisine, this place is a diamond in the rough in a city trying to get on its feet.
This was my second time dining at The Tailor and the Cook and it just gets better and better. The host greeted us upon entering and he is always very warm and accommodating. My cocktail of choice was the 'Rock and Rye' listed on their signature drink menu, and it was amazing. You could taste every spice; every flavor. I ordered the Pressed Chicken for dinner, my date ordered the steak and both of us are still raving about both dishes. We also ordered the Charred Carrots paired with a pistachio yogurt sauce as a side.. I think that may have been my favorite part! Great atmosphere, amazing food, and wonderful staff. I would recommend Tailor and the Cook to anyone and I can't wait to dine there again!
The staff are very attentive from the moment you walk through the door until it closes behind you. Although pricey, the food is delicious. I had the mahi special, and it was the best recipe for mahi I've ever had. The portion was perfect for me, but my husband's steak was small, and he was still hungry when we left.
