The best word to describe the Swamp Fox is mediocre. The food is nothing special. Portions were quite large. I asked to have one of my sides swapped out due to allergies and they did no problem but it was a $4 charge. The decor was uninspiring - really needs to be updated and made more attractive.. Food wasn’t bad, just ok.
The restaurant is rather unassuming but the food is excellent. The shrimp and grits and the crab spread appetizer were exceptional. We were so glad we gave it a try!
The breakfasts are wonderful. We also had dinner and the She Crab soup was great!
We have always enjoyed Swamp Fox!! We come there often when we come to Charleston!!!
We had a lovely experience before our date at the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. The food was great and the service was outstanding - very attentive and accommodating. Try the goat cheese cheesecake - its amazing!!!
I don’t understand why reservations for this excellent small room are so easy to come by. Take advantage.
We were immediately greeted by a nice man named Daniel. He took us to our table and chatted a bit with us. Our waiter Shane was knowledgeable about the menu and charming. I have a severe food allergy to milk and had called ahead about the “low country bouillabaisse” and spoke to a chef named Al. While at the restaurant Al came out and spoke to us about the dish and was very nice. The bouillabaisse was the best I had ever had and would highly recommend it to anyone! The Swamp Fox is my new favorite in Charleston!
The Swamp Fox is one Charleston's treaures. Lovely food and staff and the best value in town.
The chef kindly came out to make sure the special , that was being served first time that evening, was up to snuff.
Fabulous as usual. This is a cozy little gem in the Francis Marion Hotel.
We always enjoy your restaurant.
Sarah was wonderful.
We were guests at The Francis Marion during SEWE 2019. We had a dinner and one breakfast at The Swamp Fox.
Breakfast was not good. The service on Sunday, February 17, was abysmal. The restaurant was not crowded; the waiter, while friendly, was not on her game at all. We had a bowl of cereal and a bowl of oatmeal and it took forever. We ended up having to pour our own coffee, our own water, had to ask the waiter twice for the check and then had to wait forever to get our change.
The dinner was outstanding. Daniel, our waiter, was the consummate professional. The She Crab Soup is as good as I've had. The crab cakes were quite good, not outstanding, but good. The blackened catfish was excellent. The Bouillabaisse was outstanding. Be aware, however, that it [the bouillabaisse] is quite spicy.
Valentine’s Day. Food took a little while and was just average but still a nice place to go out!
The food was excellent, staff friendly, and piano music provided a nice touch. The Swamp Fox was the perfect spot for a quiet, delicious Southern meal for two.
My go to pick. Always consistent and great servers. Love it
Enjoyed both dinners we had there. Their house Chardonnay was very good. Just in town for a few days, are first time. Stayed at the hotel there. Very happy with restaurant and hotel.
I was in town on a solo trip and this was a wonderful place to have a meal alone. The piano player was wonderful and the wait staff was amazing. The food was absolutely delicious and the ambience was perfect
The food was ok. Seemed a bit rushed. Ran out of Pinot grigio and some of the meals were not tasty and cold.
I appreciated the gluten-free options as 3 in our part were celiacs.
Meal was fine. It was not good that for a party of 5 the restaurant added tip and did not inform me and I consequently added another tip. Called and was told the amount would be refunded. They also informed me that the policy is to add gratuity to 6 plus individual dining. We were only a party of 5.
Most of the party of 4 meals were good. However, the Braised Short Ribs were overly salty and the Mac and cheese was very dry and tasteless
The food was very good. The ambience would be improved by dimming the last gets. Live piano added to the atmosphere.
The Swamp Fox is a good hotel restaurant- we found it to be better for dinner than breakfast. In fact, we would NOT recommend the breakfast buffet- it was terrible- order off the menu for morning. The dinner portions are really large so order knowing the portion sizes. The music in the evening is a bit too loud if you sit close to the pianist. The short ribs were outstanding.
Very nice atmosphere. The food was delicious. The live music added to the experience.
We are visiting Charleston for holiday staying at the Renaissance Hotel. We chose Swamp Fox for dinner which is close to our hotel. The service and ambiance including the wonderful piano player was fantastic. The drinks were good. We started by ordering the Grilled Baby Brie appetizer which was very over cooked. The Brie was not warm and gooey it was hard and cold. The outside was burnt - we complained and the server offered to replace it which we declined - he should have sent it back and offered to remove it from the bill but did not. The she crab soup was fantastic. The fried oyster appetizer was good. We ordered the grilled filet mignon for main dish. The filet was stringy, tough, chewy, not tender and had an odd aftertaste. Overall the total bill before tip was $113. We would not go back or recommend this restaurant.
Tried their shrimp & grits since they tout them so highly. An adjacent table from Seattle asked where the grits were.
They seem to rely heavily on cream sauces.
Dish was disappointing to say the least.
Did the Xmas Buffet. Great variety of food & desserts. Some of the best prime rib ever. Nice decor
Service was not by any means better or even comparable to other restaurants in the area.
Service was slow. We had to wait around 10 minutes for someone to wait on us. The restaurant was busy but 10 minutes seems like a long time from being seated to having your drink order taken.
Brunch with family on Christmas Eve - very few people in restaurant. Service was excellent and food was well prepared. Nice atmosphere. Prices quite reasonable.
Service was excellent. Nice ambience as a gentleman was playing Christmas music on the panio. All staff were professional. Food was good. I had a salad with shrimp and the crab soup. My son said the salmon was good. Restaurant appeared to be clean. We enjoyed our dinner.
the people friendly food was good my husband had the fried chicken was too spicy for him wish that had been written in the menu as description otherwise very good
Just average hotel food.
Well priced for the amount and quality of food. Not rushed, conversations are do-able and comfortable.
Great breakfast. Super service right in the heart of town
Great for family Thanksgiving. Got in at the last min with out of town guest. Saved the day.
As in the past, the Thanksgiving buffet was a delight...great food, friendly staff, and comfortable environment.
I expected much more in the heart of Charleston! Too bright. Poor wine selection. Food was fair at best. I’ve never had short rib that was tough!
Four of us had dinner. One had a steak, which he liked a lot. Another had salmon, which she enjoyed and the other two ordered appetizers and salads. I had the bacon wrapped scallops, which were very good, and the fall salad with squash, pecans and cranberries. My husband ordered a Bibb salad and the crab dip, which he described as”fine”.
Loved listening to the live piano music .
Terrific location, decent staff, underwhelming food, higher price tag.
In a city where there are plenty of high end food options, The Swamp Fox was a good find for my wife and I. The food and ambience where very nice. Service was good.
