The Strand House Ratings and Reviews
My wife and I came here for Valentine's Day. I was already bothered by the fact that I made the reservation weeks prior, but was not informed until the last minute that there was a special menu with limited options and inflated prices. When I tried to cancel the reservation they told me I would incur a cancelation charge of $50 per person.
The food was tasty, but the portions were sparse. I spent about as much as I would at Mastros with significantly smaller portions.
Ultimately my wife and I enjoyed the ambiance, but we were disappointed with the steep price for small portions and slow service.
Extremely noisy (you cannot have a conversation with someone sitting across the table) even on the very top level. No easy or close parking, and the City makes its revenue from expensive parking tickets (no, didn't get one this time). No valet parking. There is no view despite the fact that they promote one. The service is ok, nothing great. Food is fair but very poor value since the portions are ridiculously small. Wound up with a very large bill for two people ($ 160 without tip and didn't order alcohol) and left hungry anyway. I won't be returning. This place lives on its location and it's bar, and I don't think they care much about the restaurant.
Gathered friends for Dine LA Lunch. All had Branzino and it was exceptional. Sensed a very subtle attitude when server left regular lunch menus and we informed him we had made reservations for the special Dine LA menu. But along the way he warmed up. Lovely day and wonderful beach vistas.
VERY expensive for lunch, but worth the view. My lunch was $60, w/o any alcohol! That was just one app, one entree and iced tea. Now that is pricey. Service was very slow, esp considering we were there well before noon, before the rush hit. Busser service is excellent there tho. Usually service there is very good tho. Btw, the mac & cheese is excellent, however, it's TINY and it's $13 for a tiny portion.
My husband likes his steak blue, it came that way. The cauliflower side was amazing- the best cauliflower dish I have ever eaten. My Branzino was tasty and well cooked.
And the Apple cheesecake tart a great finish.
Service was good. Ambience lively but not overpowering. Definitely coming back
Being vegan, I would not normally choose this place for dinner, but we were celebrating a birthday and this is where the birthday girl wanted to go. Overall, it was a fabulous evening. We arrived early and shared a huge order of french fries (which are normally cooked in beef tallow...why? But they were able to make an order for us without animal fat). We had cocktails and enjoyed the start of a beautiful sunset. Everyone enjoyed their dinner. From the margherita pizza, to the fish, to my delicious avocado salad (which they modified to make vegan), everyone was very pleased. Even though they were very accommodating to my special requests, it would still be nice to see a few more vegan options on the menu.
I love the view out the window of Manhattan Beach Pier. It is gorgeous!
Food is excellent! I have dietary restrictions so they had no problems tweeking my meal to fit my needs. Presentation of food is perfect. I had Branzino that was delicious! My husband had a wonderful pizza.
We went to this restaurant as part of the Dine LA experience. Interesting that we had to request the special menu and subsequently overheard the manager telling one of the work staff not to give the special menu unless guests requested it. Food and portions were excellent. Wine pairing was subpar; would have been better off to just order a glass of decent wine, rather than pay a premium for two tasting portions of not-so-good wine. Waiter was nice. But, as Manhattan Beach locals we found ourselves wondering how well this restaurant is managed vs just relying on the view for repeat customers. Also interesting that this is one of the few Manhattan Beach restaurants that doesn’t honor Open Table credits.
We went for dine la and the menu was very good, excellent service. We chose the $25 wine pairing which seemed like a bargain versus us ordering 1-2 bottles of wine. The pourings were SO SMALL, we barely felt we had one glass requiring us to order extra wine which made it more expensive than ordering wine of our choice. We would have appreciated when we were deciding wine pairings or purchase we could have been told that pourings were small. Our waitress was great, but disappointed in wine options. Have dined at others with pairing never this small.
Had reservation through Open at 12:45 for 5 people for a birthday, was told since we were 10 minutes late that they no longer had our reservation but she will see what she can do. Seriously, never sat down until a little after 2 pm. Almost 1 1/2 later finally sat down. Ended up in a table with the sun in our eyes the entire meal after turning down a table outside in the sun. Meal was fine. First time we were all there, somewhat disappointed. They provided a menu with happy birthday on it and provided a cute dessert at the end with a candle.
2 bloody Mary’s, 1 mimosas and 2 beers $75...
On the Open Table reservation site, I had indicated that we were celebrating a birthday and retirement, and we were pleasantly surprised upon being seated that they had personalized the menu with a congratulatory message about the birthday and retirement! The waitress gave us good explanations of the entrees so that we could make our choices more easily. I had been here before many years ago, and was happy to find the food better than I had remembered. We had a fun, pleasant time celebrating our special occasion, seated next to the window on a sunny South Bay day!
