First time, and will be going back again soon! Still craving the amazing pizza!! Service great, cocktails great!
The Star is one of our favorite places when we are visiting Oakland. On this visit, the kitchen made a mistake with our order, so our pizza took longer than usual. Our waiter was very apologetic and offered us a free appetizer of our choice for the inconvenience which was not expected but very much appreciated.
Waitress went on break after taking our order and forgot about one of our pizzas.
Star was always my "go-to" pizza place. LOVED THE TILDEN. But, somewhere along the line (last 6 months...plus) the crust has changed. The Tilden is no longer on the menu, though orderable, as how to make it is on the wall in the kitchen...
It's not the same, i have ordered other pizzas, the vegetarian, the california, and the tilden several times now. It's different and is just an average pizza now. Not one to "die for"... My friend attributes this to the crust being different. i don't know, all i know is that i don't want another bite. Sad to have lost my
favorite pizza place.
i'd like to add that the staff has fallen off also. They don't serve you the first piece any more and when there is a party in the back it is so noisy you can't talk or think...
The only problem I had was the lack of communication between Customer sc and the actual establishment... I was question about a no-show whereas I had been seated for 30+ minutes. The line of communication should be clear so potential accusations wont happen.
They forgot our appetizers, other than that super nice
Girlfriend just loved to the US and she was craving deep-dish. There’s no place better than the Star.
It's a good solid restaurant with attentive staff. The thin crust pizza was tasty, the crust is super thin, and it's quite crisp. It actually reheats really well also, as we had leftovers. The bar staff was super nice, and made a great wine recommendation, their service was pretty quick given how busy the restaurant was. The host and the waiter were both excellent, so service generally is on point. The bar was super sticky and had food on it when I sat down, I had to clean it myself, which kind of grossed me out, but it WAS busy. The noise level was quite high, so if you LIKE that, or don't mind it, you'll be ok, but we found it to be tough to relax. We agreed that we might get takeout vs dine in, in order to avoid the noise, but I like a different place better for my takeout, which is why I wouldn't recommend it. If you're OK with a loud place, or you're noisy and prefer NOT to get side-eye, then this place is totally worth a shot. It's a nice looking place, and they have a parking lot for their guests as a bonus.
This is a good but basic pizza restaurant. Service is generally attentive, and tonight was no exception. Food is consistently good. We ordered salad, broccolini, wings and pizza.
Pizza & service were great. Just over priced!
We had a party of 14, and the service was excellent! We over-ordered the quantity of pizza, as the server suggested that one person could eat a small. Not the case. A small can easily feed at least 2 people. The deep dish was really yummy.
The sausage sandwich was soooo good. The bread it came on was really fresh and the marinara sauce was delicious. My colleague’s client ordered the meatball sandwich and she was from back East like me (so we know meatballs) and she said it was phenomenal! Great service and location. Highly recommend.
Deep dish pizza was amazing as usual.
We had a group of 9 for dinner before going to the Grand Lake Theatre to see a movie and they did a great job getting us served quickly. The pizza was delsih!! The salads were plentiful.
I love The Star and go there often but this meal was disappointing. The salads were fine, but the lettuce didn’t seem as fresh as usual. And we asked them to turn down the music (it was 1 pm on a Tuesday and there weren’t a lot of people there) and the wait person basically said that they wouldn’t turn it down. That was surprising and disappointing since I was with an older friend who is quite hard of hearing and I selected The Star because I thought it would be quieter than most spots especially at lunch.
We have never had a bad (or even so-so) meal at The Star. We come almost weekly as the staff is friendly, food is great, the whole place just has a wonderful vibe of welcome and yummy eats. I hate to brag about The Star (but I do!) because I don’t want it to get where it is hard to get in. And oh yes, really super bar — will make your drink exactly as you like. Great place!!
Solid neighborhood-stye place. Good bar & very good pizza
The service was substandard. We had to go to the bar for a second round of drinks. One pizza was completely forgotten and didn’t arrive until 7 of the 9 people were finished with their dinner. We had to continuously ask for the pizza. Kept being told 5 minutes until the manager admitted it was completely forgotten and they wound up not charging for the one pizza. Not sure we will go back.
Our favorite starter is the Burrata Caprese. Love it! Have tried different pizzas and sandwiches. All very good. Staff is accommodating and efficient. Overall great experience everytime!
Cocktails and pizza were very good, but Greek salad made with old lettuce with pink-edged leaves not good and fresh lettuce should have been used. Service was very good.
The place was good for a upscale pizza restaurant . However the pizza wasn’t my favorite . It a deep dish so I was expecting layers and layers of cheese and meat . The crust didn’t meet my expectations and the depth of the pizza wasn’t amazing . I don’t want to seem critical however coming from another city I came here because I saw how amazing the entire look of the pizza was based off of pictures . My order was done incorrectly the first time as well. We asked for a pizza but all pork products replaced with chicken . And we still received pork . The waiter was terrific and solved the situation but it was frustrating.
This is the best pizza place we've found in the Bay Area. The appetizers are always good; we usually have chicken wings, a salad and broccolini. The pizza is solid. The portions are generous. This time service was a little off, but generally it's good.
It was a Friday night. We had reservations, and we were seated immediately. We did not have to wait for our server. She was attentive all evening. Our Mediterranean salad was delicious with the right amount of dressing. We were able to order the Vegetarian Pizza with the thin, crunchy crust.
It was an enjoyable evening. I have been here many times for lunch -- delicious, easy to get a table without a reservation. This was the first time I have been for dinner. I will be back.
Always love the pizza and meatballs here and we were seated very quickly!
This was our third visit to The Star this month and easily the most unsatisfactory, largely because the restaurant was busy (Memorial Day) and maybe understaffed. The pizza that we ordered was not delivered by the server (she could not identify the diners) but was taken back to the kitchen where it sat for maybe 10 minutes until we alerted one of the wait staff when it was then delivered not quite hot from the oven. Drinks and salad were, as usual, very good. We are dedicated The Star and Little Star customers so this experience was not good. The Star needs to up its game!
Great pizza - love the crispiness of the thin crust. Absolutely delicious baked wings. Great cocktails. Can't go wrong at The Star.
The food is fantastic. I think they must be very attentive to the ingredients they choose. On the face, it should just be a straightforward pizza or salad but is not.
The service was fabulous as well. Very attentive and personable without being intrusive.
Fortunately, I can walk there because parking is horrendous.
For pizza, it is hard to beat The Star. And the vibe feels like it might in a nice Chicago or New York pizzeria. The food comes quickly, even when they are busy, and they have a terrific selection of beer to go with the pie.
Excellent service, delicious pizza, and a great bar.
The whole experience worked out well. We had a big crowd for out daughter’s graduation with family and friends aged 11 to 87- and EVERYONE enjoyed the food! Our server was awesome and very accommodating and we didn’t go broke on the evening! It was great!!
My family's pizza fave in the East Bay and very kid friendly.
This place is amazing. The good and drinks are so good and the atmosphere is really fun!
Great food and family friendly atmosphere. I recommend the BBQ CK pizza!
Our third visit to The Star in two weeks and by far the least satisfactory. Food was not as good and the service was poor. We ordered cocktails and asked that salads and pizza be served after the cocktails had been finished but the server claimed this could not be done so we got cocktails, salad and pizza almost simultaneously. The previous two visits drinks, salad and pizza were nicely spaced. The server was not user friendly which is not typical of servers at Star/Little Star. Food was also not as good as on many previous visits to Star/Little Star.
Best thin crust pizza in town, and great service!
Great cocktails and excellent salads and pizza. What's not to like?
The Star's pizza is awesome. In general, we love their food, even the non-pizza items (like the salad and the cheeses).
Fun place for sure, but over-rated. Not sure if I would recommend to friends.
I thought the food was great and our waiter was attentive and helpful. The restaurant overall was a quality date spot HOWEVER... the hostesses at this restaurant are extremely rude and was borderline unprofessional when I arrived. I had made reservations but due to parking constraints we arrived fifteen minutes late even though we had called ahead to let the host know and we’re told the message would be delivered. However once we arrived the hostess had some major attitude and asked if we would sit at the bar seeing as how we were late. She was unfriendly and unsmiling and I politely said no because I did make the effort to make a reservation for that reason. I work in the service industry as a server myself so it gave me no joy in calling over a manager immediately after being seated (not in a great spot either but whatever) to let him know to speak with her and that her rudeness was fully noted. He apologized and the hostess will in no way deter us from going again, but be warned that they clearly have low expectations for their greeters.
The food was excellent; had a thin-crust and a deep-dish pizza plus a salad to share. Service was attentive and timely. When one of our cocktails tasted "off" (tonic water not fizzy enough and weird flavor) it was promptly and cheerfully replaced with a different drink. Like many restaurants, there was a TV in the bar area that can be seen from restaurant seating area--a plus for some diners, a detraction for me--but that seems to de rigueur these days.
