The Star Inn The City
Open daily from 9am til late for breakfast, morning coffee, lunch and dinner.
We dined at the Star Inn for a family meet up. Food was incredible and service impeccable. Thank you to the chef’s and our fantastic waitress!
We have been before a couple of years ago and couldn’t fault anything however in return the service was shocking, no greeting, never offered to take our coats, never poured our wine or asked if we wanted anymore drinks didn’t even get our coats on leaving or say good buy. Ver disappointing
To celebrate a friends birthday, the food was outstanding!
The service even better, special thank You to Alex who pulled out all the stops and brought over a dessert platter with happy birthday!
Myself and my friend had a wonderful dinner last Friday.
Our waiter was very friendly and informative about what was on the menu and gave good recommendations.
The food was extremely tasty, flavoursome and good to look at!
The only downside was that we did feel a bit rushed. I appreciate we only had the table for 2 hours, but we had our first 2 courses in under 45 mins and we had to ask if we could have a break before our pudding!
Otherwise all lovely.
Wonderful location, restaurant had a great ambiance, service was excellent, and the food was worthy of a Michelin star restaurant.
I would definitely eat there again.
Fabulous lunch as part of mums BIG birthday celebrations
Great food, amazing service and such special attention to detail
All Andrew Perns places are special and this is no exception
We arrived around 6, a very quiet time, which we liked. I can't review a variety of dishes because we both opted for the scallops and Jake in a dainty risotto. Both were nicely done and a special word of praise for the hake. Perfectly cooked, nestled in a risotto with crunchy robust samphire and liberally sprinkled with sweet mussels and tiny prawns. The whole of the ingredients offered such a satisfying taste and texture. Service was prompt and pleasant. The restaurant is 'country house' style, which is pleasant if unremarkable, but we found the puffy fringed floral overhead shades really jarred. We also had a bit of an issue flagging down our waitress because of the bulky planter/ divider down the middle of the tables, effectively rendering us completely invisible if she was in the other half of the room. It didn't matter during our simple supper but I can imagine it becoming quite frustrating in a group.
Only went for breakfast but thought unfortunately was very average. Have had far better breakfasts in any number of cafes in York.
We had a very pleasant Sunday evening with a meal for two. The restaurant was quiet but the ambience iesdcvery nice. Quality of food was excellent and very much enjoyed by both parties
Perfect venue for a special family celebration. Great many, especially the children's steak.
Although the venue is located in a lovely spot on the river and interior design is warm, modern and bright, the quality of the food for sunday lunch fell short of my expectations. Yes, it was busy, but the food on the plate, including the plate should be hot, not warm. Too many staff focused on getting the orders out, rather than ensuring their customers are happy.
We unfortunately arrived 10 minutes late because of unexpectedly bad traffic on a Sunday. We were travelling from out of town and thought that the roads would be quiet. When we arrived we couldn't have been made to feel less welcome by the front of house staff. We felt like we were just an inconvenience and that we'd have to have a rushed meal even though we should have had an hour and 45 minutes remaining on our reservation. I understand the need for restaurants to get through a certain number of covers and that the table was only available for 2hrs - which we knew in advance - but I felt like we were just on a money making conveyor belt and that there was no concern for the diner's experience. The waitress was professional and friendly although rushed off her feet and difficult to get hold of at times. Loud pop type music was playing which felt more like you should have been in a local cafe than a high end restaurant. All in all it led to a rather frantic and on edge atmosphere. It was a real shame as I had been to the original Star Inn, which was brilliant and so was excited to visit the sister restaurant in York but this experience wasn't a patch on the original. After telling friends about our experience it seems that our experience wasn't a one-off. The food was lovely, but the dining experience really spoiled it. A shame especially as this was supposed to be a special birthday treat.
first time we have been great and food great service
Fab place , very busy on arrival . Welcomed in and seated at bar. Had to wait an extra 30 minutes for our table but we were offered a free round of drinks.
When at table was served very quickly and staff were amazing . Loved it . Food fab and the mixed fruit crumble was the best I had ever had . Overall had a fab time. Will be back
As usual the food was as great as the staff
Very nice place and setting, the food was very nice and quick service, in thought the starters were abit over priced but the mains and dessert was superb, I thought there could have been a wider range too choose from on the menu, that is my only critism it the meal.
I enjoyed a very pleasant couple of hours with my friends. We had a table with a lovely view of the river. Our waiter was welcoming and did not rush us between courses. Our food was tasty and enjoyable
Excellent food and friendly and efficient service as always.
Gorgeous spot by the river. 8 of us for brunch, food and service very good
We have eaten here before and our previous experience was positive in every way.
Our more recent experience was disappointing.
The waiter forgot the side orders, these turned up after we had finished the main course.
Four people dined, two had good meals, two had bad meals, one in particular was very poor and badly presented.
At the end of our meal the waiter signed off and it was near on impossible to get attention from any remaining staff to get the bill.
The meal was circa £180.
The ambience was good, the bar staff were friendly, but the food needs to improve before a return visit.
Great dining experience. Went to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The food and service was excellent. We were also given a complimentary sharing desert for our anniversary. Will be back next year.
Very enjoyable evening celebrating my brother and sister in laws wedding anniversary
Great setting, excellent food, service was really good, very helpful with allergen needs and wine matching. Will definitely return next time in York
The service could be better. Cause I have to stand up twice to get the waiter, otherwise they couldn’t see me...
Price 4 star because I am a Yorkshireman.
Great experience all round
Lovely surroundings, excellent food and friendly efficient staff, altogether a brilliant experience. Have booked again
Delicious food in an interesting space in a unique location. Good wines at reasonable prices.
My wife ordered the burger and asked for the extra bacon to be added as an option as per the menu for £1.50. The burger came with no bacon but cheese had been added instead. Having complained to the waiter, we were surprised to have been charged extra for cheese. Obviously something we had not asked for.
Never like sitting one on a banquette and the other person facing situation, for hard of hearing. With background noise etc it’s difficult . Fortunately we had an end table so one of us could sit to the side . Waiter was very helpful in sorting. Food was amazing and service was excellent.
Lovely family lunch. Good food and service and lovely setting. I had the artichoke risotto followed by duck - both delicious. Good children's menu - good quality, appealing but not too kiddy.
A wonderful restaurant in a fabulous location. Service was exceptional I would highly recommend to anyone.
Great place for a lunch with friends, really good service and lovely food.
Beautiful breakfast as recommended by my brother! Service impeccable and very knowledgeable!
Food amazing arrived quickly and always return here for Sunday lunch! Lovely service, we were well looked after. The only comment and it might be not what it seems but we had a table booked at 3:30 (I’m 8 and a half months pregnant) and we arrived around 3pm just to ask if we could sit early as there were a lot of free tables (more free than full) and we were kindly told no but to have a seat and a drink, the table was ready bang on time which was great so not a complaint just a comment as we weren’t sure as to why :).
One of the best meals I've ever had. Only fault was that the service was a little slow and there was a bit of a mix up with two of the meals. Other than that the food was absolutely exceptional
The most amazing experience, food is excellent. Would highly recommend.
Lovely place to take friends. First wine choice not availabe, alternative didn't feel good value. Overall, we'll be back.
Went for lunch with family and absolutely fantastic. Food was yum, large portions and great value and the location is superb. Great service too.
Fantastic restaurant with an amazing menu, we were spoilt for choice. Would give any fine dining restaurant a run for its money!
We had a great experience. Attentive, friendly, professional service. Chefs amended menu to suit cows milk intolerance with no fuss and delicious results. Easily accessible with pushchair. Lovely views of squirrels playing in Park. Will be packed in summer due to location and quality so well worth making a visit midweek.
