   Consistently excellent food, drinks, service and atmosphere. Great terrace overlooking the river for warm days. Not cheap, but worth it

   One of the best locations anywhere in North Yorkshire for a sunshine lunch, the food is great but the service unfortunately was non existent - had to ask for everything at least once. mostly twice... really shoddy for such a lovely place with fantastic memories... needs sorting out please,,,,

   Great location on the river. We ate on the terrace on a beautiful sunny Sunday and soaked up the sun and the relaxed atmosphere. Sunday lunch menu was good, with a tasty veggie option of carrot and marmalade wellington … and of course Yorkshire puddings for everyone. Great non-alcoholic cocktail list and also a good review for the house white wine. Super place to while away a sunny Sunday!

   It was... Okay, fine even, but nothing special. Food was of good pub grub level, with a few tricks. Admissions was poor, which didn't bode well. But the guy who was our waiter was very good. Value for money was very poor. Wine was average. Hard to believe the Gewürztraminer was from Alsace. Average, there is better in York.

   Disappointing experience – especially for a special occasion I booked The Star Inn the City for my mum’s 82nd birthday, letting the restaurant know in advance and requesting a quiet table as she’s hard of hearing. Instead, we were seated in what felt like the noisiest part of the restaurant, despite there being clearly better options. The food was mixed — my broccoli starter was poorly presented and unappetising, though the stone bass was excellent. The chicken dish lacked flavour, though the celeriac was lovely. Not ideal at these prices — the bill came to £300 with just three glasses of wine. No one acknowledged my mum’s birthday, which may seem small, but when you’re 82 and rarely eat out, a little care can make all the difference. We felt ignored, especially in contrast to the attentive service at the table beside us. It was the company that made the evening enjoyable — not the setting, service, or food. Having loved The Star Inn at Harome, this felt like a completely different (and far lesser) experience. I wouldn’t recommend it.

   Having eaten at The Star Inn the City twice now my verdict is that it is hit and miss. We had a really special evening meal there that we were really happy with, and returned for a lunch that was ‘ok’ at best. The Star Inn serves modern British food with a decent amount of seasonal and local ingredients. It does some things very well - a dish of Stonebass with a spectacular veloute sauce was truly sensational. On the other hand other things underwhelmed- a decent fish cake served with a sauce which had been left to sit long enough to form a skin and, worse of all, a duck breast served lukewarm and overcooked and then returned to us reheated under a lamp so that it was now so overcooked that it was almost impossible to cut with a knife. To be fair, they comped the duck when we complained, but it still kills the mood when one member of the party’s meal is ruined. In summary, you can have some great food here if you choose right and are lucky, but when you are paying £300 for a meal for four people you’re entitled to expect a bit more consistency.

   I originally booked for a Sunday roast which I didn’t realise they stopped serving at 4pm! The staff was lovely and and the food was very nice! But I honestly think the value of the food is extortionate for the amount of food you get on the plate! We paid £54 for sausage and mash which I think is very expensive.
