The Stained Glass Ratings and Reviews
We celebrated our Anniversary here last week and were very impressed all around. The atmosphere is lovely, terrific service, great wines, and an outstanding meal.
The duck was exceptional, as was the tuna trio. I had the ciopinno special which was delicious, if a little on the skimpy side.
Will definitely go back!
Menu was amazing and the food was very good. We had the strip steak special which involved two small steaks with coatings. In each case one was overcooked (thinner meat) and the other was fine. Our waiter never came by to check on us or the meal. He was not very attentive. That said, the food was very good and the atmosphere was very nice as well.
A cute place that is perfect for small and large parties alike. I was impressed that when our server was working with another table when we arrived, the bartender came out to get our drink order. Very nice! I've found service to be slow this week at many restaurants, perhaps because students are on break? This place was the exception.
Three couples gathered for a New Year's Eve meal. The fixe prix menu was diverse and tasty. The bottles of Italian Sangiovese were great and a relative value. The service was a little challenged by the crowd, but were attentive and cheerful. My fried oyster appetizer and the 'Italian Donut' desert were the alpha and omega for my meal selections. We'll go back !!!
Our food was a big disappointment. For the cost, we were expecting more. For one course, we had King Crab Cakes. Couldn't find the crab, only breading. Next we had a New York Strip Steak. We expected good pieces of meat. However, we both had pieces with a lot of sinew, which made the dish difficult to eat. We had heard great things from friends about this restaurant, but were very disappointed with what we got for our buck.
This is a restaurant to come to experience the food. The crab bisque was very nice along with the crab cakes. We both enjoyed the steak. We went New Years Eve so the menu was a special menu with limited choices. I probably would not have gotten the fancy donut that our server recommended. It was nothing special. We would come back again.
A FANTASTIC RESTAURANT WITH EXCELLENT FOOD---GREAT MENU!! IT'S EXPENSIVE BUT THE FOOD IS FRESH AND PRESENTATION IS GREAT!! OUR WAITRESS WAS WONDERFUL WITH GOOD SERVICE & KNOWLEDGE OF MENU ITEMS ALONG WITH WINE SELECTION.
I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THE STAINED GLASS!!!
The Stained Glass has an elegant and relaxing atmosphere and the food is wonderful!! My favorite dish is the roasted chicken! It’s a standard item on most restaurant menus but their preparation really makes it stand out. Highly recommend the Stained Glass!’
This is the second time we've been to the Stained Glass and on both occasions the service has been bad. The second time, in December, 2017, it was stupendously bad. The waiter was crotchety, dismissive and seemed to not care even after the manager came over to apologize for the 45 minute wait for main courses, and the 20 minute wait for donuts.
The food was mediocre - lamb was fatty, the salad was swimming in dressing and the trout looked like it had been strangled. All in all, an unpleasant surprise for a holiday dinner party
I have dined here often. On this occasion, I ordered the trout, with the enthusiastic endorsement of the server. The trout must have been not fresh or something. It was extremely fishy and probably an entree I have not liked to this degree in two, years of restaurant dining. My partner’s entree, the skirt teak, was excellent. My advice would be to avoid the trout!
We were a group of 8 adults who were celebrating a special occasion for a close friend. Two couples drove to Evanston from a western suburb; and, they were very impressed with the menu offerings in general and certainly enjoyed the meals which they ordered, in particular. As the person making the reservation, I appreciated the follow-up and confirmation of our date and time for our group. When we arrived, we were seated immediately. Our waiter was very attentive, personable, and answered multiple questions. Stained Glass will be a restaurant that we plan to visit for other similar occasions and will certainly recommend to friends. It was the perfect choice for our gathering.
The service was unacceptable. After being seated by the hostess, we waited for 20 minutes before having to ask the hostess to get our waiter to order drinks. Then, again, we had to do this, to order dinner.
Truly, the food is overly expensive for the ambiance and service provided. And, while the food was good, it was not innovative or particularly tasty relative to what you could get at other quality restaurants. You can do better.
Wish I could judge this book by the cover. The menu looked fresh, seasonal and well crafted. The drink list was varied with unique flares. The decor and atmosphere were cozy, contemporary enough and sufficiently styled to keep this place falling victim to traditional, stuffy fine-dining traps. But the kitchen execution and service was lacking. Twice the server left plates without explaining what was being presented (charcuterie platter and flight of creme brulee). A steak requested medium rare came out with only wisps of pink. The artichoke appetizer lacked a much-needed sauce (just scant balsamic) and thus flavor. The duck breast was cooked perfectly but its duo of leg confit was oddly dry. We had high expectations based on its ratings and reviews, but on a Saturday night it did not live up to its billing. Dined with my wife and mother-in-law and none of us were impressed. None of us finished our plates as we usually do. In hindsight, the fact that we were seated a half hour ahead of our reservation due to our early arrival was more telling of this restaurant's slipping posture than its ability to accommodate.
We went with another couple Friday night and found the atmosphere quiet enough to hear each other, elegant but not pretentious, service attentive but not overbearing, and the food was fantastic! Two of us had the scallop & pumpkin risotto special that was wonderful!
This place is a gem. We are always in search of a place where we don't have to struggle to hear
each other. The restaurant was full, but still quiet enough for a very pleasant evening.
We booked an early dinner for a birthday and were not disappointed. Service was great, cocktails and wine flights were great. Main courses of lamb, halibut, chicken, and steak were all great and prepared perfectly. Dessert course was great - so save room. Would come back again for another occasion - service was very good.
Stained Glass is a rocking but classy establishment with terrific food, great choices, and wonderful service. Lobster bisque was equal to anyone’s, the Brussels sprout salad crunchy good, my tenderloin and crab duo was very nice, but the winner was my wife’s rack of lamb!! Wines were varied, and prices were moderately steep but worth it. We’ll definitely go back, but remember if it’s too loud...you’re too old!
WE had a very knowledgeable waiter, however, he was too busy with too many tables to serve so he was not attentive. We had to ask for him to be sent over when we needed service. It seemed simply a case of not enough staff, but on a Saturday night prime time - there should have been. Too bad - it is a wonderful restaurant but patrons are paying as much for good service as they are food.
This restaurant used to be a guarantee for great food and nice ambience for a special occasion. After 15 yrs of that being the case, our food was actually not good. Nothing tasted fresh.
The menu and general ambience seemed tired. We will probably not go back.
