The Spiced Pear Ratings and Reviews
Another New Year's Eve dinner (our fourth) at the Spiced Pear is marked by exceptional food and service! Chef Tom's food was artistic and flavorful, and Cole makes every dining experience special. The whole staff was accommodating, friendly and inviting. Thank you all for an incredible evening! We cannot wait to go back!!!
The Spiced Pear is a classic, elegant, and very upscale restaurant in an equally classic, elegant, and very upscale hotel in Newport, RI. The ambiance and service are impeccable. The waitstaff is extremely knowledgeable about the menu, and responds to the diners' needs before anyone has to say anything. The food, served in carefully controlled portions, is presented beautifully, and is quite good. However, one steak that was ordered medium-rare came out rather well-done. Profuse apologies were offered personally by the manager as was a corrected serving, desserts, and an adjustment to the final bill. Because the kitchen is open to the dining room, we noticed that those preparing the food were not wearing gloves; we are not sure what are the local and state regulations in that regard. Overall, it was an excellent experience.
We are local Newport residents and enjoy the bar at the Spiced Pear. This dining experience occurred during Restaurant Week, so we had a limited menu. The wait staff attended to our every need and assured our exceptional experience. Although the menu was limited and not too extravagant, the food was more than adequate. I only wish the SP went a step further to demonstrate its capabilities.
We have been going to the spiced pear for 4 years and it never disappoints. The staff, Cole, Maurice, John and all impeccably professional yet warm and charming. the food is so good and most locals dont realize that you can have a light dinner at the bar also or their outdoor restaurant.
The Spiced Pear is one of our all-time favorite restaurants, so we can't miss coming here during Restaurant Week. We like to bring friends with us who have never been so they can enjoy this wonderful dining experience with us. The atmosphere, the service and the food are always first rate. I was so happy that we were seated next to the fireplace, as it was a bit chilly out. My friends and I thought it would be too hot, but we were very comfortable. This evening, for the first course, three of us ordered the tortellini with duck confit, which was outstanding. My dining partner ordered the cauliflower soup with cracklin's, which I tried. It was wonderful. For the main course, we all ordered the Statler Chicken. I loved this dish!! The chicken was a tiny bit dry, but I didn't mind in the least because this preparation was delicious! We especially loved the spaetzle, and bacon is always a welcome addition to any plate! For dessert, the olive oil cake was very good. We were a little disappointed that our favorite waiter had the night off, but the service is always excellent. The waitstaff is always pleasant and eager to please. We will return with more friends to enjoy this lovely restaurant.
We’d read that the Spiced Pear was the most romantic restaurant in RI. We knew the location, at the beginning of the Cliff Walk The restaurant overlooks 2nd Beach in Newport. We went on the night of a full moon. Still a fantastic view, and the food was wonderful. Portions are not large, but very satisfying.
Great chef’s tasting menu; very creative.
Presentation was great; flavours were notable; lobster was a bit soft — we were told “that is how the chef prepares it”.
(Gosh, we just like our lobster fully cooked.)
The lamb was marvellous.
Waiters were attentive & staff was personable. The setting, decor: fantastic!
Spiced Pear is in a beautiful setting at the end of the Cliff Walk. It is worth a trip for the scenery and the architectural treasure. The Spiced Pear martini is a must, but the food did not measure up to my expectations for the price. The selections left something to be desired, and the preparation was not that outstanding or imaginative. They use a lot of beans which I consider to be a cheap filler. If you don't love beans, your selections will be even more limited. If I return, it will be for drinks and a souffle. Note: we would have ordered the souffle, but the waiter did not mention it until the end of the meal - and prep time is 20 minutes. It should be ordered with dinner. Given the choice between Bouchard and Spiced Pear in Newport, I would definitely opt for Bouchard.
Great location, service, food, environment. The food was outstanding. I was supposed to propose here but wound up proposing earlier in the day because the evening weather forecast was terrible. If only the weather was nice, this would have been perfect because the outside of the restaurant is beautiful and the window view we had inside during dinner was amazing. The servers were engaging and the service was timed perfectly. I'd def recommend it!
First time at this restaurant, I will give you the pros first and then the cons . It overlooks the ocean , and it is located at the beginning of the cliff walks in Newport so location is amazing. Great views. The food is excellent, and the presentation of the food was great. This next part can be a pro or con depending but the kitchen is wide open and butts up to part of the dining area so you can watch the chef prepare your food depending on where you are sitting. It is interesting and if you've ever watched Master Chef or any of those shows it's interesting to see it in real life. But it's also somewhat distracting, and a little noisy at times. We were there the very end of September and outside was a very nice fire pit with chairs where you can sit and have a cocktail. The cons are, it takes a very long time in between courses. Even taking into account that this is a high-class restaurant that prides itself on its presentation of food it was still wait too long between courses. Our waiter while very personable and professional was not that attentive, did not offer us a drink when we first sat down, and I had to ask him for a second drink which took a long time to get. And lastly it is expensive but you know that going in and it is worth it. Overall it was a very nice place, historic, scenic, and classy and I would definitely recommend it
We had the chef's wine tasting menu. The maine lobster entree was delicious. We also really loved the souffle for dessert. The service was great and they were very accommodating in terms of switching out dishes that had ingredients we didn't like. The wine selection was also great and complemented each dish.
I was really disappointed in the ambiance of this restaurant. There is such a wonderful view of the water from the dining room; however, we were seated with our backs to the window. When we arrived there was more than an hour of daylight left in the day--so the view could have been very lovely. I went there knowing it was overpriced, but there was nothing served at the table that was outstanding. What a shame!
we had the 5 course meal which was awesome...the food was Delicious..little bit of everything..thought I would I was going to be so full but the timing was perfect on each course ..excellent view of the ocean...nice and quiet.. not to many restaurants left for quiet conversation... perfect
The food and staff were wonderful. We had Fabio as our waiter and he was very nice to talk to. Our food was excellent( we had butter roasted lobster) and the view was incredible. We were celebrating our anniversary and we would recommend the spiced pear to our family and friends.
Always have a great experience at Spiced Pear! This visit was no different. Joseph and Teddy were great at the bar during Maurice's day off. Andrew was an excellent server, and the food was excellent! Can't wait for the off season so reservations won't be so difficult to come by.
