Very interesting, intimate. The Fireside cocktail is awesome!
The food is tasty. The service is friendly. The wooden tables and booths made for a vibrant date ambiance. On the downside, the menu is small and the prices are high for food that can easily be made at home or ordered at other restaurants for far less.
The Southern makes a great spot for cocktails. The food it lackluster at best.
Service was 👎
Server was not very attentive.
8 people dining... 6 meals came out the remaining 2 meals took over 15 minutes to arrive.
Food is ok. Eggs Benedict lots of sauce little flavor
Chicken and waffles boring.. cold
Eggs and bacon.. bacon was very fatty
Bloody Mary mix yuk
Outside venue nice
I went here because I was looking for a place where I could have dinner with an old friend from out of town and sit outside. Plus, the food looked great on the website. However, the website has a huge picture of fried green tomatoes which I was looking forward to , and then they didn't have them on the menu. We also kept smelling the grill, but there are no real grilled items on the menu either. The menu is somewhat limited, and the food was okay. But, it was a great place to sit outside, chat, and have a couple of beers.
Decent food, and drinks were good. Patio is fantastic, with a great ambiance. Negative for the night was the service. Server made us feel like an annoyance, and there was minimal effort it seemed.
Might try The Southern again for the patio, but odds are we won't be back.
Appeared to be having an issue with a leaky air vent, which was a little off putting. But the service and food was great, perfect brunch spot! Surprised it wasn't packed?
Service was not good. Not accommodating for children
I'm from South Carolina, raised on southern cuisine, and the Southern was pretty good representation of the South. Grits were on point!
The Southern has been a top spot on our list for years -- it's hard to beat their food, drinks and outdoor space. We decided to go for brunch this weekend and were looking forward to old standbys like the fried chicken benedict, breakfast mac n cheese and other tasty items. However, we were so disappointed to learn that there is a new chef who is totally overhauling the menu, and not for the better.
It's essentially a basic menu that you could find anywhere, and nothing decidedly "southern" about it. Our server previewed the dinner menu with us as well, and we were equally disappointed. Where is the awesome burger with pimento cheese?? I can get a regular cheeseburger with cheddar cheese anywhere. What about the fried green tomatoes?? Huge let down.
It should be clarified that I am all for updating menus, adding new items and support a chef's creativity and vision. But this menu is boring, quite frankly.
Needless to say, we didn't end up staying for brunch on Saturday and we went somewhere else. I know we weren't the only ones to change our plans that day. Hopefully they hear our feedback.
Very cool restaurant in a trendy upcoming part of Chicago. Great southern food with a lively bar area . A nice place for a casual lunch or dinner with friends and family. Stopped by last week as we had heard about Sounthern and we were not disappointed. I will try it again during the evening.
Service and staff were awesome! Used Groupon and food was amazing!!
Our server ignored us most of the night, which was only the beginning. My chicken was cold on the inside and my girlfriend's Shrimp and Wildrice had a teaspoon of rice and 3 pieces of shrimp. A little scarce considering the price. Won't be back.
The food was very good but the noise level was unbearable. Will not go back on a Saturday night.
We have dined here many times before! The service was very good! Tried the Fried green tomatoes again. The last time we ordered this, it was an appetizer. (Which is the way I would have preferred). It is also served with a corn type relish with diced red peppers! It was my fault that I did not ask if it had bell peppers in it! (I am very allergic). We did enjoy the chicken ! The burgers were on special for half price the night we dined. Saw many being served. They looked very tasty! Slagel Family Farms grass fed beef! Can't wait to go back to try them!
We had brunch on a Sunday. Easy to get a table. Outside dining g nice and shaded. Inside high top tables bar stools are not made for people 5'3" and under. The rung on stoll is too low for feet.
Server was very friendly and food was tasty.
I chose the Southern because of the outdoor patio photos and menu I saw on their website. It is summertime and my friends and I wanted to go somewhere with outdoor seating. Although I made reservations and specifically requested patio seating, we got there and were told by the hostess that patio seating is first come first serve only. It would have been nice if they would have let me know in advance, as I had made reservations. We ended up seating inside which was fine because our table was next to the open patio. The Southern had good food. The avocado toast was the best dish we had. We also tried the fried chicken, pork roulade, blackened catfish and fried green tomatoes. The food was good, but on the salty side. I wish I could say I would be back, but I have had better southern food elsewhere in the area.
Very nice outdoor setting, the menu was a little limited but overall great experience!
Great place to get Southern food, everything we ordered was delicious and was like taking a trip to the South. From the deviled eggs to the fried chicken to their modern take on jambalaya. Highly recommend!
Best fried green tomatoes I've ever had and Fried chicken was excellent! The atmosphere is quaint. Highly recommend,
Fried green Tomatoes are back! Daily soup was a corn shrimp chowder that was amazing! Service was Outstanding!
The good great, the was awesome and the location was perfect. Right in Wicker Park area.
Like the set up kinda small little place great out door area big bar amazing bourbon selection
I love the outdoor seating. The drinks are great and the food is good. I wish they had more items without meat for Brunch. The menu is not very extensive and rather small.
We visited The Southern at 9:30pm on a Friday night and sat in their outdoor patio. There were hanging lights above us and the setting was very comfortable. Started off with the mussels which were amazing! We also had the fried chicken dinner and the pork shoulder, both was good. Our server, Tierney, was great - super friendly and attentive!
Good service. The hot wings, wild rice jambalaya and blackened catfish were delicious.
Elevated southern food. 30 minute wait for the Fried Chicken but it was crispy and tasty. The greens and cornbread are worth the trip. Everyone enjoyed their entrées, pork, catfish and jambalaya. Green tomatoes were underdone but overall enjoyable experience . Service was good. Surprised it was not busier on Father's Day.
Food was outstanding! Great twist on 'classic' dishes. So so so good! And the bloody Mary was delicious!
We have been to The Southern on other occasions. This visit was ok. My guest ordered Iced Tea. Our server returned to say they had to brew the Ice Tea. He said he would wait for it. After inquiring about the tea a few times, it was finally served after the entrees were served. The corn chowder soup was very good. The macaroni and cheese was pretty good. We ordered the fried chicken entrees. Some of the pieces of chicken were outstanding. A couple of pieces were a little dry. Tried to order a beer, but they were out of some of the menu selections. The service was adequate/OK.
Service was very slow but to their credit they realized it and took care of our first round of drinks. Food was OK.
Great food with diverse flavors, great starters, healthy salads, and great variety of main dishes. There is something for everyone! Great service and fun décor which was upscale yet totally comfortable.
There was a delay in the kitchen for two of our orders but the food eventually came out and the service was stellar.
Possibly the best fried chicken I've ever had in my life - and I've eaten all over the south. The greens were excellent, the cornbread with honey butter authentic and mouth watering, and the salads were surprisingly fresh and healthy. Even the cheese plate had an excellent blue cheese. My daughter is a vegetarian and had the Southern Toast which she loved, and there is also a risotto. My boys had the slow roasted pork shoulder and gobbled it up. Such a good dinner - and fun.
Very basic. Could use an upgrade.
Great selection of unique Southern favorites. Amazingly unique cocktails
Great service, excellent drink and food varieties
Great cheese tray with delicious chutney, mustard and pickles. The Southern toast was absolutely delicious. The egg blending in with the other ingredients made it a great dish to eat. The fried chicken was good, but very typical. The cornbread was a nice addition. Great, cute place with good food. Would go there again.
I would not recommend this place for "real food" lovers. The menu is limited and food was just ok. I got the feeling that this was more of a pub for hanging out & having drinks (the drink menu was endless). I would imagine this is a great place for the under 40 crowd
The customer service was wonderful. The woman at the front was extremely helpful in getting us more chairs for our table and seating us outside. She found a way to assist us and was very pleasant. Plus, you all's food is incredible.
Awesome experience I had for my Birthday. It was my best-friends birthday as well. We, along with our families and friends had a blast.
I've come to The Southern many times before but only for brunch - which is fabulous especially on their patio in the summer - but this was the first time I had gone for dinner. My friend and I both got drinks, which were pretty good, but small. We ordered the Souther Toast as an app, perfect to share and really yummy (eggs, avocado, pork belly, how can you go wrong??). But then dinner came and it was pretty bland...we both got a fish dish that we were excited about it but it just didn't taste like much. If anything the fish had too much of a fish-y quality. The vegetables were limp and the sauce was a white cream sauce that didn't add anything...I was bummed by this because I love their brunch so much. I also felt that there weren't enough options for entrees. Service was also really slow despite us being one of maybe 6 tables in the place.
