Arrived a few minutes after reservation time. Was seated about 4 minutes later, but greeted by the waitress about 10+ minutes after. When she finally came, we had our complete order ready to go. We gave our drink orders and then the food. Since we ordered 3 appetizers and an entree to share between my date and I, I asked her to space out the apps in a way that made sense. We got our first drinks at 9:07pm.. 37 minutes after our reservation, and about 27 minutes after we were first seated. The salad came out along the octopus app (which was overcooked so much so that I could hardly cut through it), and then about 10ish minutes after, our entree arrived. Our escargot appetizer was never brought out prior to the entree. We ate the entree and then got the escargot after... Aside from the really poor service, and mediocre food experience, we were seated at a table directly outside of the main dining door so we were getting echoed voices from the entire restaurant. Super loud and the table didn't afford us the opportunity to sit closer to one another so that we could try to have a conversation... the tables were oddly large for just 2 diners. Not a great experience.
Could not get service, tried repeatedly and could not get help, would have loved to try it
Perfect service, good food that's a little pricey for what it is. Would still go again.
Our evening started with a nice surprise in that they served Socite Apprentice IPA beer-somewhat hard to find in restaurants. All of the main courses were excellent and I highly recommend the cheese options for desert.
Beet salad was the best I've ever had. Chicken dish lovely but could have been cooked a little longer for me.
If you want delicious French farm to table food that is excellent with great service, try the Smoking Goat. I had their prefix menus and loved everything
The staff was amazing. We were thanked multiple times by different staff mementos for coming to their restaurant. They were all attentive. Food was really tasty and fresh. Great atmosphere-really hopping place!
Our waiter was great, drinks were tasty. According to my husband, the octopus is to die for. It does get crowded and tables are very close together and gets really warm and very loud. The steak was okay, I've definitely had better, it did lack flavor. The banana bread dessert was absolutely delicious.
They have several gluten free options and even happily adjusted one of the desserts to make it gluten free; I had the beet salad, salmon, and ice cream with bananas. It was all delicious!
Our waiter was friendly, competent, timely, and unobtrusive all at the same time...well done.
I’ve lived in np for 10 years and never tried smoking goat. My wife and I went for a date night and we both agree it was one of the best meals we’ve ever had. Octopus is absurdly good.
Food and service were superb. We had the sea bass, chicken, pork, pear blue cheese salad, mac and cheese side, chocolate torte, creme brûlée, and bucheron cheese - all of it was amazing! Our server was incredibly knowledgeable. Unique, quaint atmosphere. Great spot!
I made a reservation late, so our table wasn't where we preferred, but the manager (Michael, I think?), was so accommodating. He looked for alternate seating and when that wasn't available, he brought us a glass of champagne. The food was great, the ambience was lovely, but the service is what made The Smoking Goat a truly special place/experience.
The banana bread dessert was great, the rest of the food was just ok, not worth the price in my opinion. Tables were too close together, could easily bump elbows with the table right next to you, making it hard to have an intimate experience and conversation. Service was just so so, appetizer order was placed incorrectly, and timing between courses was off , and drinks went empty for far too long. Overall a very disappointing experience for a very long awaited dinner.
Thanks to the Smoking Goat for their wonderful hospitality. I proposed to my girlfriend there on Good Friday and the staff was super helpful and accommodating. We had an amazing time and the food was out of this world. It's our favorite restaurant in San Diego! Looking forward to going back soon! Their Macaroni and Cheese is the best!
Excellent restaurant - very good food and very good service
It was great except the steak frittes was quite different than what I have had at a French restaurant. It was delicious but half
Have been going here for years. Could be last time. The food cannot be beat like always. But the service was beyond bad. We did give our bus guy an extra tip since without him we'd have been utterly alone all night. 6 of us so we were charged an obligatory EIGHTEEN percent tip. Really?? We finally tracked down the manager who wasn't receptive. My husbands birthday, so with the terrible serviice I felt obligated to pick up the entire tab AND that crappy tip.
We were looking for a fun place to go while on vacation. I would go again if I am ever in town. Everything was very delicious!
Wonderful from the word GO! We'd arrived a little early for our reservation, but they were able to seat us right away, which was nice. The servers were both polite and expeditious, and we enjoyed everything about the meal, from the drinks (I had the cider, my partner had a glass of red wine, and my daughter had a house-made soft drink similar to a virgin mojito, with muddled mint and a red berry (I don't remember the name exactly). I ordered the salmon, which was served with three veggies, beautifully presented. My partner's beef cheeks looked really good, and my daughter's steak frites, with truffle fries (YUM) was generously portioned. I ordered the flourless chocolate cake, my daughter ordered the goat cheese cake, and my partner had a cheese plate with chevre. I didn't have room to eat mine, so they boxed it up for me. I ate it the next morning, and it was delicious! I tasted the goat's cheese cake, and it was really well-matched with a fruit compote that was just sweet enough to cut the richness of the cheese, but not overpowering at all.
Overall, a great experience. Worth the splurge (about $250, incl. tip).
Excellent location, service and food. A very enjoyable dinner before a concert. Thank you!
very friendly staff. the food was delicious. We both chose the butternut squash ravioli. The owner (or manager?) checked in on us multiple times as well to ensure everything was to our liking.
Very pleasant ambience, satisfying food and variety! Nice, conversational level, not too noisy!
Our server recommended a lovely bottle of wine, loved the atmosphere but the food left something to be desired.
My fiancee and I came here after taking our engagement photos, because we felt like we needed to celebrate with something a little better than a burrito. Our reservation was for 7:45, and when we arrived, we were told that some tables were still lingering, but were invited to sit at the bar and order a drink/appetizer, which we did. I had a Lily Rose and my fiancee had a beer - both drinks were good, but we felt bad taking up space at the bar while we waited for our table (which was ready about 20-25 minutes later, by which time we were STARVING).
We ordered beef tartare, steak frites, the pork, a side of mac and cheese, and the flourless chocolate cake for dessert. The tartare was good - I was expecting the yolk to be on top, not already mixed in, because breaking open a runny egg yolk is one of my great joys in life, but the little toasts and cornichons were plentiful and delicious. The steak portion of the "steak frites" is pretty basic - just a standard grilled NY strip, but the duck fat fries were AMAZING. Pork was also acceptable, and the mac & cheese was on par with the duck fat fries. Smoking Goat, you sure know how to do carby deliciousness! Our dessert was tasty, but we were pretty full after demolishing our carbs on carbs.
French Fries unforgettable!
Loved everything about our dinner here. Lovely bottle of burgundy, welcoming service, warm vibes and killer food! Thanks Scottie and Wendy!
The appetizer menu is absolutely amazing! Each one is great and there are a variety of options to choose from...
Main courses are so-so.. I've had a few meals here and they just seem to fall short with flavors and taste. Great ideas, but maybe not implemented well?
I will be going back but probably just for appetizers.
Side note: Great wines that you don't see very often!
Great all around
You can get 3 items (appetizer, entree and dessert/cheese) from the menu for a prix fixe, and very affordable. Four of us shared 4 appetizers, so we got to try the octopus (grilled served with a marvelous sauce), escargot (good butter herb), and passable fois gras and beef tartare. It was the entree that made the day for me: the white sea bass melted in my mouth and was served wit an exquisite light sauce (wine, butter, stock?) on mushrooms and spinach, quite wonderful. Two cheeses and two desserts closed the deal; the boucheron was fabulous (if you like this, which I do), and my friends and I were split 50-50 on whether the flowerless chocolate cake or the banana bread pudding were better. Monday night, few customers made for quiet (ah!) and good service. We brought our wine and paid corking fee ($25), so I don't know about their wine list.
Very nice neighborhood restaurant in a rustic building. The wait staff were pleasant and the service efficient. The food was very good. The 3 course dinner was a value and the corkage was reasonable. I would recommend the restaurant to anyone.
The food was delicious, but the restaurant is really loud and hard to have a conversation with someone. It is also a fairly small space so the tables are really close together and the bar is tight. We enjoyed the food, but did feel like we were too on top of others.
It was our engagement dinner, it was just the two of us enjoying and celebrating.
The food was very good, no the best i have ever tasted but as introduction to french style cooking it think it was very good. As appetizers we tried the french onion soup and the crisp octopus which was delicious.
After that we split ( we are not big eaters) on the beef cakes which would have to be one of the softess pieces of meat i have ever tasted. It was confited and came with some deliciously cooked vegetables and potatoes on the side.
My girlfriend had a cocktail called lily rose which she said was pretty , it was basil and vodka based. I had a glass of their house wine which was pretty good for a house wine. Usually house wines sometimes can be pretty comerical or lack taste, but not this one.
Great food, ambience is excellent and the service is absolutely wonderful.
Will recomend to eat here on what ever the ocassion is .
I enjoyed the service very much. I was dining alone, and staff were great. I ordered the Smoking Goat cocktail, which was presented beautifully and a nice change from typical cocktail ingredients. The wine by the glass menu had multiple choices to fit different foods and tastes. I enjoyed my steak tartare Sooooo much. I followed that with the Sea Bass with mushrooms and gnocchi. Everything was presented with care, the ingredients were fresh, and the combinations a nice blend. I wanted to order a tshirt. They didn't have one in my size, but kindly took my information for when they come in.
This place is quite loud, which worked out well, though I usually like things a bit softer. I enjoyed the view into the kitchen. The hostess was very attentive as was my server and a young Brazilian food runner. Thanks for the nice time
Always delicious! Having the option of doing a 3 course tasting menu makes it easy to try a several dishes, especially if doining with company.
Glad to have had the steak tartare
Quality of the food and creative presentation was outstanding, as was the service.
Having dined here before I wanted relatives to have the superb experience in wonderfully put together entres. Always a delight.
Selected at the recommendation of a local friend. It didn’t disappoint. The food was spot on and the drinks tasty! A little loud, but the price you pay for dining at a popular place on Saturday night. Worth a try.. get the goat!!
We totally enjoyed ourselves. My husbad loved his birthday dinner!
I had reservations so our party was seated right away. The wait staff was extremely attentive but not over the top. The food was hot and scrumptious. The presentation was perfectly balanced and colorful.
