The Smoke House Ratings and Reviews
We were in LA for our holidays and had the restaurant recommended to us so decided to go on our last night. We were dressed casually and when we pulled up there was Valet parking which we'd never experienced before. I was a bit worried we were under dressed but the guy in the parking said definitely not and there wasn't a dress code. This put me at ease and when I went inside there were loads of others casually dressed and some in sportswear!! The staff were lovely and so down to earth and even though it's a place to "star spot", everyone was really nice. There were a couple of customers who were up themselves a bit but I was more embarrassed for them than anything else. I'd definitely recommend this restaurant.
The Smoke House is a classic restaurant in many ways. The ambience and decor are "old school" and comfy. You can come here on a date, for business, or with friends or family and have a great time. The food is comfort food and well prepared. The garlic bread is a treat. The martinis are well prepared. All the wait staff is very experienced, professional and efficient. I love this place. Fun times.
I've been going to the Smoke House for over 50 years and I keep going back, even though I have to say that some of their classic dishes are not very good. I go there for the atmosphere and the nostalgia, but I always recommend that people not order a steak or anything else that requires skill and knowledge to prepare correctly. I always get the chicken piccata, which I think is delicious and a good value. But the other night my husband decided he wanted a steak and ordered the $34.95 filet, even though I tried to talk him out of it. He said it was one of the worst steaks he has ever eaten - well, not really "eaten" because half of it, full of fat and gristle, was left on his plate. So I encourage people to go for the experience, but don't expect anything remotely close to Morton's or Houston's style steaks, even though the prices are not cheap. Oh, and one more thing - I resent having pay $5.50 for them to park my car 10 ft. from where I'm standing, in their own parking lot - and that doesn't include the expected tip.
We love the Smoke House. The wait staff goes out of their way to help you and the hostess even sat us when we arrived a hour early ( only took us 3 hours instead of the usual 4 hours). We live in Murrieta and try to get there as often as possible. My husband's family starting taking him there back in the 1950's and it's still his favorite place. We had prime rib and of course the garlic cheese bread.
I've been coming to the Smoke House for about 60 years now. It started as a family tradition for birthdays and special occasions. This past Friday was a combination of date night and my wife's gracious suggestion we combine it with Valentine's Day to avoid the restrictive special menu that was fixed for 02/14. While a lot may of changed since the late 50's (especially the prices) their garlic bread remains wonderfully scrumptious. I'd recommend getting an uncooked full loaf or two to go. In a world where trendy restaurants come and go the Smoke House remains and prevails.
Really disapponted this time. The prime rib was tough and nearly unchewable. The seafood brochette had one scallop in it... mostly vegetables is you consider red onion & green pepper popular vegetables (not me)... Won’t be coming back any time soon. Too expensive for what you get.
The world famous garlic bread seemed to be Kraft Mac and cheese packets sprinkled heavily on otherwise decent garlic bread. The fish tacos were delicious, but the bbq sandwich was blah and too spicy. We finally located our waiter to request something to help it be more palatable, but the rest of us finished eating before he brought it. Normally I’d expect a restaurant to not charge me for inedible food, but the waiter flitted off never asking how we enjoyed the food. I was very disappointed in the experience.
I am new to California and was looking for a place to take my daughter for a special Valentines Day outing. I came across your restaurant on a travel LA website, which peaked my interest because we are from San Antonio, Texas. I thought it would be like a home town meal, y’all did not disappoint! The atmosphere is very cozy and full of “Hollywood” actors photos and plenty of booths to enjoy your meal at. The meal is all prepared buffet style which I’m no stranger to. There was every type of meat with all the fixings you could handle. They could even whip up an omelette or a stuffed crepe kinda thing if you that’s what you like. There were sea food, salads and desserts as well. The service was awesome and our tea glasses never saw the bottom, it was a great experience and I’m sure I will make back out there again in the near future. Y’all helped to make my daughters day even more special and for that I’m letting y’all know how much I appreciate what y’all mean to me! And just to let others know that even though you need to valet park your car to get in, don’t let that keep you away! It will be well worth your time to eat here!

Frequent customer; hostess tried to mis-seat us at a bad side table. She should have checked and known better, but was also very gracious about being asked to seat us well. Waiter rushed dinner; steaks were out before we’d even finished our appetizer. Usually one of my favorite spots, but this Saturday they were off their game.
Pre-Valentines Day Date. My partner’s order was correct. Mine was wrong. Waiter took so long to return, I ate what I could. He didn’t offer condiments for my baked potato which I assumed would be on the plate and he didn’t give me the correct meat item. I turned to assist my partner with his plate and didn’t notice it was incorrect. The waiter should repeat the orders back so he writes it down correctly. Next time, I will ask the waiter to repeat the order. Unfortunately for me, this also happened the last time we went to the Smoke House.
What can I say? We love coming to this classic restaurant. It is like stepping back in time when the real show business people came to dine. It is so nice to just come to sit in these big booths and enjoy a lunch or dinner.
We have never had a bad meal or slow service. It is a pleasure coming here because every person is so friendly and helpful.
Try the pulled pork sandwich or the burgers for a delightful lunch.
We love The SmokeHouse!
Don't forget the Cheese bread!!!!
Seated upon arrival. Love that. Water arrived immediately but took a bit for the waiter to show up. Brought food pretty quickly but he left before we could tell him none of use had silverware. Had to find a bus boy who then dumped a stack of rolled up napkins with silverware in the middle of the table. Other than that we all had an enjoyable evening. I don’t recall the waiter coming back to check on us either sorry to say.
Smoke House is an institution and have been going there for 40 years. Food is very good but this time the service was very sketchy. I think it was because the server had too many tables. 4 of the 6 orders came out wrong and the birthday dessert came when we were still finishing our entrees!! The bus staff was wonderful and on top of things...water glasses were always full, plate cleared promptly, etc.! I will write it off as a busier than normal Thursday and will be back.
My fiancé and I went here for a date night. I was really looking forward to the smoke house because of its history, but sadly that’s all it was for our experience. We made a reservation at 8pm but we didn’t sit down until almost 9pm.. I understand places get busy but you shouldn’t take reservations if you don’t plan on keeping it close to the time reserved. First our waitress sat us and tossed the menus down and didn’t even introuduce herself. Walked away and we didn’t see her for awhile after that. When she came back she asked us if we wanted a cocktail, we had asked for the wine list and she reluctantly gave it to us. Only to come back and say “what do you want?” I have been a waitress so I pushed it off giving her the benefit of the doubt. From there we ordered the garlic bread which was good but not anything to write home about. Our waitress continued to be cold. We asked for recommendations and she bushed us off. Our food did come out pretty quickly but she didn’t bring it to us someone Else had. I ordered a filet and he ordered the BBQ plate with three meats. Usually when you order a steak at a decent place they ask you if the meat is cooked the way you ordered, but that didn’t happen in fact she didn’t come back until after we were finished eating and just asked if we wanted another glass of wine. While my filet was cooked well it was extremely bland. My fiancé’s dinner was all well over cooked. For dessert we had the Crème brûlée after she reluctantly got us the dessert tray.
I’m not one to leave bad reviews but this didn’t sit right with me and it has been a few days. I really wish it would have been a better first experience for us.
Really enjoyed this landmark restaurant. I don't know why the garlic bread was on the tv show 'The Best Thing I Ever Ate', it was good but not that special, but everything else we had was excellent. I had French onion soup, my husband had clam chowder and we shared the beef stroganoff which was plenty for both of us. He also had a beer and our bill came to $49 before tip. We will definitely go back.
My husband’s 75th birthday dinner was lots of fun at smokehouse we always appreciate the reliability of the food the service and the ambience in fact my 20 month little grandson who was getting antsy loved running around in a private room and nobody was there we must have run around the table 20 times.
But it was empty so we did not bother anyone.
Our waiter was great.
