The meals and drinks are always very good at the Smile. However, I have to say the waitstaff and hosts were unresponsive and frankly not very pleasant. No one asked how dinner was. The hosts didn't say thank you or good bye upon leaving. I am not expecting anything special, but a thank you or hope you enjoyed your visit seems within reason. Especially for someone who has frequented the establishment many times before.
We liked the casual vibe and antique feel to the place. We went for brunch and enjoyed our food, but one of the side salads had no dressing at all on it. Also we thought the scone should have been warmed slightly as opposed to being served room temperature with a pat of cold butter. The waitress did smile when she took our order and did refill our water carafe, but never once asked if our food was OK. Overall, nothing terribly bad, but no reason to return either.
Lovely as always! HAve been there before for lunch and dinner. Great vegetarian options.
What a gem!! I took my husband for a birthday brunch and seriously underestimated how amazing this place was. Really personable waiters, great ambience and incredible food. Win-win-win.
My dish, the baked eggs, was quite tasty, and I think my friends eggs benny were fine. But the waitress reluctantly brought me water when I asked for it (or at least she seemed reluctant) and the espresso machine wasn't working, which is really not great if you're serving brunch. But the ambiance is nice and the noise level and prices are quite reasonable, so I'd be happy to go back.
Hannah, front greeter, manager extraordinare was amazing! From the “Smile” that greeted us at the door to recommending her favorite table, she was impressive! The avocado toast was delish and the salmon with cream cheese was some of the best with a hint of dill. We will be back next time we are in NYC. 😊
Food was pretty good, but service left something to be desired. Wait staff forgot our starter than mixed up the side of the main (this is why people should really write stuff down). But very cute atmosphere.
Nice atmosphere, great server and delicious food!
Wonder what smile means in their dictionary.
Chicken was dry.
I usually love it here. I actually made my entire morning plans around wanting to bring my friends here. Firstly, they advertised some iced tea special on the blackboard outside. When we ordered it, they were out of it. (It was 12:30pm.) then, they were out of truffle oil and when I chose another option which was a special salad on the menu, the waiter came back ten min later to tell us the manager said that salad wasn’t even supposed to be on the menu. This pattern was not good and sort of embarrassing since I persuaded my friends to come with me to this great restaurant. We ordered pickles (a few times) and when we reminded our waiter, he said he thought we wanted them with our entrees. So he brought them, and then when entree came we saw that the “pickles that we paid $4 for already came as a side to the sandwich we ordered. These were definitely sandwich pickles and not a “side dish.” Ideally the waiter would have mentioned that we were getting them anyway with our entree. Finally we ordered dessert, a cookie. It arrived warm (which we were offered) and it was a complete soggy cookie that fell apart when you tried to break any of it off. All in all, I was not impressed and likely won’t be back, which is too bad.
The food was good, although when I asked for hot sauce they gave me siracha. I like siracha but it's not my go-to for american food. Also, I went for brunch and the place is very dark, probably better for an intimate, candle-lit dinner. I'd prefer something a bit more open, brighter and "airy" for brunch. Overall it's a good place.
First brunch upon landing in New York — we’re glad it was with The Smile. Hip, chill crowd in a low-key, cozy space. Loved the mix of seating options: high tables, bistro tables, even the kooky banister bar-hybrid. Very cool. Food was flavorful yet not overly indulgent. A solid neighborhood gem!
Too hot. Too slow.
The food was amazing, but the cocktails were a little too sweet. Wine was great. Server was super nice, but forgot about our 2nd drink order and never got back to us, but at least it wasn't included in our check either, so it's all good!
I confess to being very disappointed at Smile. The service wad pleasant enough, but the food was really not great. My companion ordered the quinoa with zucchinin pastas and vegetables, which, when it arrivesd, was a large lump of mushy quinoa with no discernable vegetables and no visible vegetables. It was inedible so we ordered a side of broccolini, which was ok. My order of chicken was nicely cooked but with an overpowering sauce. Considering how expensive it was, I would not go back.
I used to love this place.
It’s still beautiful, the staff is friendly, the drinks are good, but the last few times there was always a not minor disappointment.
This time, the mezze were not good. The dip was a thick mashed potatoe and the vegetables in the salmon dish were raw. I appreciate it needs to be firm and crunchy, but this was raw. The salmon was very good though.
Service was very slow and server was not too attentive. Food was not cooked properly. Disappointed.
Great atmosphere and healthy, delicious meals. I would definitely recommend!
Food was OK, service was slow and unresponsive, very loud, not recommended.
So yummy! Coincidentally eating leftovers right now.
Good food! Service can be spotty but only because it can be wildly busy. Overall food is consistently delicious, however it’s often a very loud ambiance.
Service was great but ambiance was dark and gloomy (prob good for a winter date, not for a summer friends get together), and food was so-so. The octopus was a bit slimy, maybe a bit too fatty, and the gnocchi was just okay.
Drinks were great! Food wasn't anything to brag about -- I got falafel bowl. Service was ok, waitress was MIA a lot but she was kind and let me have 2 flavors of gelato.
Noisy, food had to be sent back twice for not cooked properly, limited menu, in attentive staff and pricey.
Perfect spot for brunch. Cozy. Great food. Friendly attentive staff. We had the ideal Mother’s Day brunch !
I need to remember to go to The Smile more often! I had the salmon last night and it was done PERFECTLY! If all salmon was cooked that wonderfully, I would eat it every day! It was flavorful, spice-ful without being spicy and done to a turn - moist, delicious! The bed of English peas are not my favorite but the salmon made up for it and thank goodness the peas were done al dente.
The food here is consistently good - I just wish they would turn down the music!! It is SO hard to have to yell at your dinner companion and then everyone else has to yell over the other diners' yelling. This is not unique to The Smile - it's everywhere and I wish they would all stop.
Very cute . Friendly wait staff. Really good food. We really enjoyed our whole experience here . I will definitely be back
Bad smell in our clothes afterwards
Too expensive for this dinner
a small but hearty menu with options for everyone. food was really delicious
Excellent spot for a cozy dinner with friends. Nice menu with very pleasant service. Highly recommended
Food was fantastic. The brisket was the best I’ve ever had. Service was absent. There’s nothing like constantly thinking “where is the server” and having to be ‘that guy’ asking whoever walks by to find our server.
Have been there twice, will not return. Chicken literally raw at the bone the first visit, then overcooked and dried out the second. Server on second trip seemed to be having a bad day, not very personable and often was visibly annoyed when we weren't ready to order entree and when asked questions.
Food was very disappointing. It was all dry - over cooked.
A great atmosphere but weirdly chilly, given the grotto like decor. The beet and lentil salad was excellent.
Great food and atmosphere at The Smile. Portion size was great and choices for every one. Definitely one to go back to again!
Usually enjoy all aspects of this place. The last time was a disappointment.
The food was fine - some of it pretty good - but we had the rudest server I've maybe ever encountered. We went there for my birthday and she had darts coming out of her eyes the whole time. Pretty much threw our check at us. Never once smiled - which we all found pretty ironic. It was not a cheap meal and it's pretty astounding to think how badly we were treated when we were paying them so much. I will never go back
Went before attending a concert at Sheen Center. Location convenient but ambiance was a dark bar which was not in keeping with level of food which was delicious. The waitress was not very friendly or welcoming, she was more interested in another waitress than her patrons. I would recommend for the food as long as you don’t mind the ambiance which is “dark old mans pub” that needs refreshing. Glass of wine was expensive, but it’s the Village...so value is just avg.
Perfect place, very good food, not too noisy, reasonable price, charming.
The overall appetizers were good but the linguine pasta tasted like Mac being subtle isn’t something that works here.
