American
Tucked away in a landmarked 1830s townhouse on picturesque Bond Street, The Smile is the perfect setting for delicious food in a relaxed and cozy atmosphere. The Smile's American/Mediterranean menu is seasonally focused and designed by executive chef and former art world caterer, Melia Marden. While popular with the lunch and coffee crowd, "the dimly lit, wood-ceilinged space feels even more charming and tavernesque at night." The restaurant is open seven days serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as weekend brunch.

What Insiders Are Saying

The Infatuation
7.9

This cafe in NoHo is and always has been where New York City’s most attractively unemployed people come to have breakfast at noon.

Ratings 7.5-8.0:These are restaurants that are reliable, tasty, and particularly good for whatever we have deemed them “Perfect For.” Hit up a 7.7 for Date Night with confidence, as long as you don’t need the restaurant to be the most interesting thing that happens that night.

Enjoyed this meal very much! The wine is a little pricey by the glass but the meal was wonderful.

This was our second time at The Smile, after stumbling across it during a shopping run. Won’t be our last. Charming, good food, nice staff. ‘Our kind of place’, my wife said (more than once). A gem.

My whole experience there was average: greeting, seating, serving, wine, food...nothing was wrong, but nothing was exceptional either. Overall, I would say they could all try a little harder.

hostess was rude and didnt even look up from her post. Server was equally disinterested..seemed so bored and just was some how managing to take our order or look over once in a while to see if we needed anything.
the food was really yummy and the coctails good too. but when we were so poorly attended to..why both going back.

Kind of a weird experience. Entered at 6ish.. Place was fairly empty.. maybe 2 tables taken. We were told they were booked and only had high tops available. I said.. seriously? The place is empty? He said yeah but by 6:30 we have reservations for all the tables you see .. I went on opentable and made a reservation for 2 at 6:30.. walked over to the host and said well... weirdly I just made a reservation here for 2 at 6:30?? Maybe now I can have a table??? So... yes it was not a great welcome.. the chicken was to have roasted veggies .. instead all potatoes.. had to request the veggies .. after asking if I could substitute potatoes with the short ribs for veggies .. she said no sorry.. order the chicken.. great roasted veggies .. so I get a plate of potatoes.. all in all the place is cute.. the food that was served .. chicken and salmon delicious but the service overwhelmingly poor

I live in the neighborhood and won’t come back. I asked for @vodka (Tito’s) up”. The vodka came back twice warm, having not been shaken in ice as any bartender in the area knows.

The service pressed to collect our starters and didn’t leave me bough time to finish my main meal.

Great atmosphere. Not for me.

We came here with friends for a pre-theater dinner, and informed the waitperson right away that we were on a tight schedule. After leaving us to look at the menus, she disappeared and we had to wave repeatedly and furiously to get her attention. We received our appetizer platter relatively quickly, but then she disappeared again. We had to go find a maitre d' at least three times, getting more and more desperate, to try to get our food, which finally came over an hour after we had arrived at the restaurant, and 20 minutes before we had to leave!
The food was good; but we had not planned to have to wolf down a meal. It was not the way to serve--or to experience--a nice restaurant.
They did give us a 25% discount on the check; but, since they had automatically added a 20% tip (for virtually non-existent service), it was a bit of a "wash."
No way we will go back there.

One of our favorite restaurants in the city! There are options for every type of diet. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, unlike many other spots in the city. The food is delicious, and reasonably priced.

Would highly recommend!

Never again. Promised a bunch of things that never happened. Spent 20 minutes separating the tabs for 10 attendees after confirming by phone the evening before that this would not happen. Manager lied - saying he was the only male on staff when I called the night before. clearly unprofessional and made the experience stressful for all. Never again. Also will never book on OpenTable again as things seem to get "forgotten" or "lost" in translation.

I've eaten here before and loved it I so not sure how it went so downhill. Our meal was extremely bad. The roast chicken was luke warm, seemed like it might have been reheated in a toaster. I could barely eat it. My friends' meals were bland and lackluster as well. Salmon was dry. The quinoa dishes were also barely touched by my friends. The hummus and bread apps were tasteless as well. The only decent thing was the the brownie dessert.

We found The Smile one day when looking for a good pre-theatre place and have returned many times since. The veggie options are GREAT; the serving people are competent and accommodating; and although the restaurant is not huge there are good seating options. The main thing is: the food is terrific - original and tasty.

This is a nice room but the positives end there.

Portions are small and overpriced. For instance, and appetizer of bread and olives came with 2 slices of bread. The food itself is good but nothing special. Service by very young (student?) staff is rushed and the room is very noisy.

We left feeling our pockets had been picked, and hungry. Stopped off for pizza after leaving.

Very attentive service. I was here on a date and I was very pleased. Adorable rustic decor! The food was delicious. Decided to skip the meat options. We did primarily seafood and veggies. The cocktails were consistent and well made. I had friends pop in last minute and the restaurant was very accommodating. I would definitely come here again!

Nice wine selection, some vegetarian options, nice atmosphere if you're sitting outside or close to the window. Staff was friendly. I ordered the Vegetables and Quinoa dish from the dinner menu which was some quinoa with uncooked vegetables and a cold poached egg on top. Let me repeat: A. cold. poached. egg.

I checked if it was intentionally served in this manner and confirmed that this was the dish as it was intended to be enjoyed. Unforgivably unpleasant and definitely not worth $17.

We ordered a lot, shared everything, loved everything. Also, they use paper straws instead of plastic ones, which made our environmentally conscious group very, very happy.

Good selection of veggie and meat dishes.

My family and I chose The Smile for a special occasion, to meet my future wife’s parents. It was a lovely experience. The service was friendly and quick and respectful. The food was absolutely delicious, although the portions are a little small for the price but did not take away from how much we enjoyed it. Delicious! I would recommend The Smile for a special occasion and for fantastic wine. Highly recommend!

We loved everything about this hidden gem. It reminded us of the old Greenwich Village we knew. Stone foundation wall, small but uncluttered place. Generous drinks, friendly, professional server, shortish menu with plenty of tasty choices. We ate too much! Big, juicy mussels in delicious white wine sauce, crunchy mezzo platter with great dips, crusty bread, generous spicy lamb meatballs, and brisket over yogurt and currant couscous. Should we have had dessert? No way! But the ice cream was to die for. We are looking for a reason to go back!
