About The Silver Dollar - Priority Seating
The Silver Dollar is a re-imagining of the honky tonks of Bakersfield, CA, circa 1950s, when Southerners transplanted by the Dust Bowl to Southern California created one of the great American musical styles. This music, much of it on original vinyl, spins around the clock at the Silver Dollar, and is served along side craft cocktails and Chef Tyler Powell's made from scratch, Southern-meets-Southern-California cuisine 7 nights a week and for the city's most exciting brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. The restored 1890s firehouse that is home to the Silver Dollar features a 70 seat covered patio.
* This restaurant uses a Priority Seating style of reservation. The Silver Dollar - Priority Seating Ratings and Reviews
I rarely write reviews on Open Table, but Silver Dollar deserves a five star review. Every second of our experience from the ambiance to the service to the food was top notch. We were visiting from out of town and said we'd drive the 2 hours just to come back for brunch again! What a lovely time!
The Silver Dollar didn’t honor the opentable reservation I made. When we got there I was told the reservation moved us to the top of their wait list. It took another 20 - 25 minutes to get our table. This isn’t what I expected after “making and receiving a reservation.”
Walked in to a mostly empty room but sat next to the door on a very cold night. Asked to move to a table away from the door but told that the policy wasn’t a reservation but merely to be placed at the top of the list. Then told the other tables were reserved. Huh? Woman restaurant God at the door was unsmiling and Unaccommodating. Her reasoning made no sense and this put a pall on the whole meal. When the table next to us left, we again asked to move. The waitress said sure but God said no. We moved before her no was out of her mouth.
We were glad that we used the priority seating at Silver Dollar. We arrived on time and were at once. Shortly after being seated, the place was full inside with only seating outside.
We enjoyed the brunch menu with the diverse choices.
Great place, great food, and very good service.
Highly recommend using priority seating especially for brunch on Sunday.
The food was good- it was extremely noisy and our seat was in the aisle. I had many butts at my head level from people standing at the bar. Ask for a table against the wall. Also, it was so dark I couldn’t see the food I was eating. Server wasn’t the most friendly until he received our tip. However the others working that brought drinks and refilled water were great.
Took family to Silver Dollar for their first time! They were excited to see "not your usual" starters and one made a meal with them. My husband had the catfish dinner, his favorite, and it measured up to his high standards. I had the chili combo which was chock full of meat and beans! Spicy but delicious. My son had the baby's back ribs which he generously gave a bit of a taste. Service was attentive but not overbearing. Enjoyed immensely and will go back!!
Service was great, the area was cool. Food was great. My only issue that I had was that I had ordered the brisket, however, wasn't told that it was very spicy. I took a bite that had a big part of the bark and my mouth was on fire. Once the heat died down I ate the inside part of the brisket and it was fabulous. Wasn't noted in the menu that it was a high spice level. Should warm people about that.
The service was very good. Our waiter was very attentive and responsive. The food was good...not memorable, but not disappointing. The portions were huge. The fried pickles were decent, but not as legendary as they would lead you to believe. The fried okra on the other hand was the best fired okra I have had.
The bad...and the reason I would not recommend this to someone and would likely not return...the flies. I have never seen so many flies concentrated in one area. We were eating on the patio. I would expect the potential of some flies or bugs...but this was overwhelming. If given the choice, I always eat outside. I have never encountered so many flies. It was difficult to eat my meal, hold a conversation, and continually wave my hands around trying to shoo flies away. I can't imagine it is any better inside...as all their doors are open. I do not know if the dumpster is close or if they are not taking out the trash frequently enough...but they have to get this under control.
When my friends and I first got there the table that we wanted was available however there was a humongous dog sitting right next to the table and I don't care to eat with dogs. It was not a service dog and I was not aware the dogs were allowed at this restaurant I was extremely disappointed and asked not to sit in the area although it still bothered me that there was an animal eating in the same restaurant that I was eating in that was not a service dog. We were then moved to a bench and the bench was extremely uncomfortable and did not support my back in which I have a handicap. I then asked to move to another table after noticing that other people have left and then a private party came in and they were so loud that my group and I could barely hear each other talk. I was extremely disappointed in the ambience. The server was great she was very accommodating and the food was so so the best part of the day was the fried pickles which I absolutely love.
Have been several times. Never disappoints. Great food & drink selection. I refer to their food as "fancy southern food." Haven't had a sub-par dish yet. Our party thought the ribs, pork chops, fried chicken, and fried appetizers were excellent. Beyond the food, the true gem of this restaurant is the unique, made in house sauces. Try them all!
It is ok to have servers with that "don't have a care in the real world" attitude , but only if they are quality servers. If they are no good then they are just servers that aren't good and look a mess. Wait staff certainly not the worst but needs a tune up
Not Worth It
The restaurant is essentially an old fire station with the large front doors left open which isn't by itself a terrible thing but we did spend much of our dinner trying to keep flies from landing on our food. The food was essentially comfort food with very limited options for kids. The place was noisy, the service was slow and a bit disorganized (couldn't get a drink refill) and the seating was erratic - two gentlemen were seated at a table for 8 and we were crammed around a table for two for example. I wanted the beef brisket which of course wasn't available because the smoker was down - on a Saturday at 6... The place has charm and a bit of cultural clashing as young urban professionals mingle with locals and rural families in a chic area of the city. The charm however doesn't offset the flies, lack of food options and a general sense of chaos evident throughout everything happening in the place.
BEST BOURBON LIST!!!!
We enjoyed our evening at The Silver Dollar! My friends commented several times on the quality of the bourbon list. The food was outstanding as well.
The priority seating option was outstanding. The hostess called early in the afternoon to confirm our reservation and provided the option of inside or outside dining.
The service was fine given the size of the crowd on a Friday evening.
Our night started out by the host/hostess telling me and my family that this place might not be the place for us!! We have been there before:/ It made me so mad. Then we got our table outside, took the server 15 minutes to greet us, food was not great tasting for the price you all charge. Then the server almost dropped plates on my son's head and I protected him and the server blamed me in a joking way that it was my fault. Not cool. We have so many amazing restaurants in Louisville and I could have chosen any, we decided to come to you all and we regret our decision and will not be back.
