This was the first time we had visited the Shoulder of Mutton since its refurbishment and whilst the toilet area is much better, the rest struggles between an attempt at fine dining in one part and a gastro pub in the other. This clash of styles does not work unfortunately. The food in general was good although we were not happy with the pitiful amount of crab in a starter . When the waitress was questioned on this, the feedback received was that the kitchen was running short and rationing portion size . In addition there was no wine menu and you had to go to the bar to see what was on offer - even then there was only a general description and we were reduced to reading each bottle to see exactly what it was. Service was good however and the staff cheerful but the pub really needs to address some basis issues if it is ever to reach the heights it obviously aspires to.

We all ordered different sandwiches from the lunch menu and they were all absolutely delicious. We also had the soup of the day which was really tasty. Only negative would be the new seating and decoration since we last went in, it has one from a beautiful, cosy pub to a cold and dingy feeling cross between a restaurant and a pub but it doesn't feel like either. It just didn't feel right and has lost the charm it used to have.

Went on Father's day with my daughter who doesn't like beef or pork and found nothing on the menu. They were so unhelpful and rude. Suspect food is microwaved as they wouldn't swap anything around. Won't ever go back.

Food; below average and barely warm. The fish was terrible overcooked batter and dry fish, and the chips............who leaves chips!!! we did. Very very expensive for the quality and quantity od food served.. Service was ok at first and deteriorated to poor over the evening. Extremely disappointed. Won't be going back Such a shame, it's a lovely pub in an idyllic setting.

Really good food - and definitely worth trip . Children's roast was also excellent and a good portion - children's sausage and mash was a little bit small portion for anyone but a toddler , but other than that excellent

Excellent service by people who knew what they were doing - excellent beer. good cheese and onion pie and steak and ale pudding but too many chips and they were too hard. Would suggest some nibbles as well as starters - we waited thirty minutes for our meal. Appreciate the new decor. Strange their was no lamb or mutton on the menu.

Really great place, found the staff welcoming, restaurant size of 5 tables in the dining area was intimate, view out the window was a tree lined cobble track - lovely. Great selection of pub style food to choose from at a good price. Will definitely be back again.

Not having been to the Shoulder for a while I was disappointed to see that the interior had been unsympathetically refurbished and much of the old character had been lost. The food was good and the beer well kept as usual. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Refurb not quite finished, needs a lot more decorative touches! Staff very friendly and helpful. Food arrived warm, not hot, not very well presented and definitely over priced in comparison to other local restaurants. Won't be returning!!

We picked a bad day before a three day shut down so they had run out of cask beer by 5pm. They seem to have one girl waiting tables who was run off her feet so the service was slow between courses. However the food was good and we would go again when its not bank holiday.

Booking was simple via the Open Table website and staff were happy to oblige and sit us at our table early when we turned up over 45 minutes ahead of time. One friend and I had roast leg of lamb on a bed of seasonal veg with proper roasties, sweet potato mash, and a giant yorkie - plus a little extra gravy which was no trouble for chef to provide! My other friend had the cheese and onion pie with cheese sauce and looked really happy with her choice too. Dessert was a mixed affair - I had the Chocolate Fondant which came with ice cream and a jug of chocolate sauce, all totally yummy and runny in the middle as it should be! One friend had apple pie and ice cream (didn't fancy the cinnamon infused creme anglaise) which was quickly polished off, whilst the other had Eton Mess - this wasn't particularly creative or good value compared to the other desserts as the presentation wasn't inspiring and could have been made by anyone. Priced at £5.95, you expect every dessert to be as good and have taken as much effort as the Choc Fondant. Overall, we still enjoyed our meal and would return again, but won't be ordering the Eton Mess.

A cosy if slightly eclectic pub. Had a lovely wood burning fireplace that filled the room with a wonderfull smell. We opted for meals of less traditional pub fare...the Black pudding starter was beautifully presented and was lovely to eat but most flovours were sublte with no real leaning one way or the other. Pork Loin beautifully cooked and presented..really nice plate of food. Can definitely recommend the sausage and mash too tasty sausages. So great food, reasonable service and a nice atmosphere for lunch but a little at the top end of the budget for us..

Bit of a mixed bag really, nice place and good service. I had fish and chips, fish was beautiful but chips were not the best. Sticky toffee pudding was heated up too much and hard, my daughter eat mine! A bit disappointing but would give it another try.

My partner had battered monkfish for a starter.. was extremely greasy and not crispy. I had no problems with my meal, I just wish there was more of an option for vegetarians. Very limited. Main meals were delicious, lovely bread starter for myself. Decent price and lovely service from the staff.

I had heard of the Shoulder of Mutton via friends and when a group of us decided on a final winter hike before Christmas, it was the obvious choice. The weather was wet and miserable which make our hike around the local moors somewhat 'challenging'. Getting back to the cars and dumping our waterproofs, then settling into the warm and friendly surroundings of the pub was already an uplifting end to the trip, but as we perused the menus we realised the best was yet to come. 3 of us had Sunday Roasts and 3 had other a la carte options, and all were DELICIOUS. Presentation, ingredients and flavour could not be faulted. 5 of us also decided to go wild and have dessert as the mains had been so good, and these proved to be just as exciting as the previous course - I think we agreed that my sticky toffee pudding was the overall winner... The service was very friendly and helpful - even when we accidentally broke a glass which ended up in one of our meals - it was instantly taken away to be made fresh, with no hint of annoyance and no mention of additional charge - despite it being our own fault. Those of us not driving enjoyed a selection of real ales too. Unbeatable Sunday afternoon pub/restaurant in our opinion!

We have now been twice for an eve meal and a drink to this busy popular pub. On both occasions the food was of a high standard. Served by very friendly staff. They also serve excellent well kept real ale and a range of good wines. Well worth a visit.

We booked on line and received a call to confirm the booking - very efficient. The staff were very friendly and it appeared to be very well run and organised. Mussels were fantastic. Had the Fathers Day Roast Beef and they provide 2 options - pink or cooked through. We both went for pink. The food was gorgeous. The best Yorkshire Pudding I've ever had and it was huge. Sticky toffee pudding for dessert. Just gorgeous and nice and light. Recommended to friends already.

No starters, no wine/alcohol , 4 meals 2 deserts £100+ Maybe it's because it was Father's Day. Food itself was good, no complaints but I eat out weekly and thought it was very overpriced for a pub.£22 for a steak makes London cheaper. I'd have a rethink about some of the prices. Appreciate there is little competition and again this is a potential contributing factor
