The Shores Restaurant - La Jolla Shores Hotel
The view is wonderful, food was average, our service was poor. We had to ask a number of times for missing items.
For the past 18 years this has been our go-to restaurant for a quiet conversation or business meeting. Today two colleagues and I met for a planning session lunch. It was obvious that the waitress was green since she didn’t check on us at the right times, and was unfamiliar with the menu. I ordered the Panko crusted wahoo sandwich. It seems like it came from a frozen package, square shaped, with soggy panko with no seasoning, The fish was unusually tough. The best part was the potato bun, which didn’t quite fit the square wahoo pattie. I would have sent it back, but the waitress was nowhere to be found until it was time for the check. I took it home for my husband, who eats anything!
Made last minute New Year’s Eve reservations and wasn’t sorry. Beautiful view of the ocean, decent food, cheerful service. Would definitely go back.
We were really impressed and positively surprised with the food. The dishes we had were excellent.
We love the location right on La Jolla Shores, and the service was very good. But sadly the food did not live up to expectations, especially when it’s a $68 price tag for the Christmas Day buffet.
It was a beautiful setting. The Christmas dinner buffet was delicious. I appreciated the special kid friendly menu. I liked that the breakfast options were provided throughout the duration of the buffet.
Dec 25. Buffet was awful.... turkey. Okay. Ham. Okay. Paella not okay. Veggies not good. Would not return
The food ranged from a bit above average to exquisite, the latter end being what you'd more expect from the $64/person charge for a buffet. Ambience was, as usual, superb--best view in La Jolla! as was our service with Caitlin. What was annoying was the micro charges, which seemed really petty, to wit: not including the price of basic coffee/tea/soda in the price of the buffet (how cheap & tacky can you get?), & not including the price of parking! A notice says to have your ticket validated, which we did, only to be informed that it only covered the first hour. We were slapped with a $14 parking charge, after validation, having been there just a shade over 2 hours. These latter kind of charges were NOT what one expects from restaurants of this caliber, & being so nickeled-and-dimed detracted from the overall excellent experience. So: ambience = A. Service = A Price/Value = C Policies (parking, charging for drinks) = F
Made reservations a month out for Christmas brunch and were forced to sit outside in the cold even with lots of empty tables inside. Possible because we had a 2 year old? Denied our request to sit inside. Not a fan of this place
Had full table service in the bar overlooking the beach for Cheistmas Eve dinner. Fabulous view and no crowd.
We have been coming to the Shores forChristmas Eve dinner for 16 years. It was always my mothers pick and even though she is gone we continue the tradition. Sadly the service might have us change our plans next year.
Waited 20 minutes even with a reservation. Than taken to back table near bus station. I confirmed window table when I called to confirm reservation 3 days before. Luckily hostess found table a bit closer. Waited again for it to be set. Waitress friendly but clearly no one had any training in real dining service. Runner threw our plates on the table. No one checked to see about more drinks. Waitress cleared table and stacked the plates on top of each other right in front of us. Brought coffee but no spoons.
Food was excellent. Dining however is more than just the food, especially at these prices.
I thought everything was great, as did everyone else in our group. For the exceptional view, the prices were very reasonable and probably even lower than what they should be. My only gripe is the front reception area seemed slightly chaotic and we were seated roughly 20 mins after the reservation time. No one was starving so it wasn't a very big deal and still a 5-star type of experience.
Had Xmas Eve Dinner. Service was friendly and helpful. Seafood Cioppino was loaded with fish - and tasty.
Great food and service!
The Shores restaurant has been a favorite for years. The menu is varied and everything is fresh and delicious! Of course, you cannot beat that view, even when it is dark!
The Shores is a lovely hotel restaurant, food is good, view spectacular and service always good.
The view is what brought us here. The food was okay, but not great. I have come to expect better from anything in La Jolla.
We really enjoyed the Thanksgiving buffet. Plenty of variety & dishes were well executed. Place was packed, but service was friendly and welcoming. Loved the view too.
The Thanksgiving buffet was very good and the views are amazing.
Who wants "mascapone leek" dressing for your thanksgiving dinner? Not me! The turkey was dry. However, I can't remember having better ham that was served. I suggest a raw bar station and fewer salads for a better value, I also suggest including one glass of wine or at least half priced.
Our server was pleasant and fun. Our table was ready at the time of our reservation
My mother and I had the Thanksgiving buffet. The food was lacking. We liked the mashed potatoes, spinach salad and pumpkin pie. The turkey was rubbery. The food tasted bland. The cooked vegatables were under spiced and some was burnt. Loved the view and the dining room ambiance. The staff were quite friendly and helpful. We will not be back next year.
Always a great place for brunch. If a couple, try to get one of the booths.
Great food, great view, perfect for a family dinner.
The entrees were fresh and nicely cooked and the service was good. The views of the beach unbeatable. Celebrate the view with a glass of sparkling or two, enjoy an entree but forget starters and desert. Both were a let down. Such a shame.
Came in for my anniversary dinner and was diapponted that the food was dry with three out of the four entrees. Diffently not worth the price of the meals. The view of the shores was nice but that was about it.
Awesome oceanfront location - great view even after dark. Service was superb, food was delicious. Definitely on the “go back to sometime” list.
We have eaten here many times but hadn’t been for several months. We are vacationing in the area and decided to eat here again. There was total turnover from the chef to servers. Our server was great but the chef was not willing to work with us. My husband is gluten free and was able to get a main dish which was good. However when asking about desert, the chef said nothing was gluten free which was strange as on the menu were things that are gluten free with maybe a cookie that isn’t. To make it gluten free just serve without the cookie. We were the last diners in the restaurant so thinking the chef had a tough day and wanted to go home? Has left a bad taste and not sure we’ll be returning.
Fantastic location, great menu options, super staff. We do brunch or lunch, so can’t vouch for dinner or nightlife. Walk in to this restaurant directly from the Walter Munk Way along La Jolla Shores beach and be amazed at your experience.
Our waiter encouraged us to have a leisurely paced meal. Great for catching up with friends. Fantastic sunset was a plus!
Beautiful view of the ocean from any place in the restaurant. Courteous staff and outstanding food!!
Wonderful, friendly service!
The meal was great and a great value. We highly recommend it!
My partner and I decided to do date night at the Shores. The table was right next to the window with a gorgeous view of the pink sky and the ocean. It was very romantic. Our server was very nice and the food was fresh and hot. I have been enjoying this wonderful location for over 20 years and it is lovely, as always.
Went for restaurant week and all the food was terrific. Loved the crepe brûlée!
Food was very good. Noisy party next table ruined the ambiance. Service was sub par for this price range.
Went there for dinner and ordered the butterfish as a main and the Brussels sprouts . Food was descent but not extraordinary. When the server delivered the fish he was holding it out in front of me so I assumed that he wanted me to take the plate form him. I grabbed the plate not realizing that it was very hot and burnt my fingers! I also felt like the server was rushing us to get on with the night. I won’t be going back.
We really like The Shores, but not the parking!!! They need to negotiate better parking rates....2 hrs at $14.00 AFTER the restaurant validation of only $5.00.
Polite and outstanding service! Friendly and delicious entrees!
Very good service, beautiful views, and excellent food. Very impressed!
