Cozy, London like (quality) pub dining, in below street level space. Great server w personality. Great Shepard’s pie and sides, desert. Wine election could be more diverse.
Solid menu includes traditional favorites. Definitely a keeper.
the ambiance and decor was the best part. the food was decent- the Shepard's pie was all potato. not much flavor and too starchy.
the server was not attentive at all. we had a hard time getting refills on our water while we were having our dinner. she hardly looked up and never checked in on us.
the food is pricey considering what it is.
Come here before around 5 p.m. and it's great--cozy, old-fashioned atmosphere, nice staff, good value, good food. As the happy hour crowd came in it became unbearably loud and crowded. Bellowing people, really unpleasant. I would go again but not at happy hour/dinner time.
My second visit there. Love the food and the cask ale. Went vegan with the cauliflower steak this time. Feelings are just so-so about the bar which was very crowded and very noisy. Dining room is very pleasant and what this review is about.
Went because if the good Yelp reviews. Food medium to poor. Tooooo loud. My 25 yr old dining companion wanted earplugs.
Good venue for a work lunch. We were delighted to be allocated a private booth for our group of seven. Friendly staff. Side of chips was delivered fairly late after the rest of the main meals after asking about them twice. Pie and pint combo was not billed to expectations - where we started with some pints and did not order extras during the pie and pint meal, but were charged for the original pints on top of the lunch deal anyway.
The service and food were very good. The ambiance of the outside patio is very nice, however the smell of the NYC streets made it a bit of an unpleasant experience.
The fish and chips was the size of a steak! 10/10 would recommend.
Great waiter, Nathan !
This was my first and last visit to the restaurant. My lady friend and I went to see the Downton Abbey movie and she wanted English cuisine for dinner. I made reservations at the Shakespeare. When we got there the restaurant was in the basement of The William. The dinning area was far from "pubish" and more like "dumpish." I had a Shepard pie which was essentially a bowl of mash potatoes with a slight hint of lamb in the base. Yuck. My lady seemed to enjoy her food; she had Scottish eggs for an appraiser and bangers and mash (sausage and mash potatoes) for entree. My bottom line is that I was disappointed and my lady was not. Keep in mind English cuisine is not very well known and I can see why.
Cask ales on top were all local and non imported. The website says very differently as I was hoping for UK ones. Drinks were slow to come out. Shepherds pie was small and not enough lamb in it. Tasted fine. Just a little disappointed with the casks on offer and the size of the dish.
A great place. Get transported to England in an instant. Fantastic ambiance and great food!
Good food, attentive staff and reasonable prices for New York city and this area. Air conditioning was too cold for us. The staff turned it down when we asked but it went back up not long after. We had asked for the patio but was told it wasn't available so that was a disappointment. Would have liked to know ahead of time when booked with OpenTable as we might have made a different choice.
It was too cold with the air conditioning very high, and it was very noisy. But the food is very good and they Accommodated adding a third person and graciously moved our table.
Lovely place with great service and very good food. The seat cushion covers in the garden are need cleaning desperately, but that's my only suggestion. Will def. go back.
I'll definitely return, hopefully when it's quieter. It was not the restaurant's fault -- there was a large, loud, rowdy party, but our waitress was sympathetic and accommodating. I had the special, a brook trout which the waitress described as "summer on a plate," and it was indeed delicious. Looking forward to trying the regular menu on my next visit.
There are several dining spaces at The Shakespeare. During my most recent visit, I was in the bar area with a friend, which was a little louder than I like. (I'd rather not have to shout across the table to have a conversation.) The other areas are generally quieter. The food and service are very good. I highly recommend the restaurant.
Good pub fare in a tavern-like setting. Food was good, but a bit pricey for lunch. Service was friendly. On a nice summer day, the ambience is a bit dark as you’re below sidewalk level, but could imagine it would be a cozy spot in Autumn and Winter. The restaurant is connected to the William Hotel, which may be why prices are inflated above expectation.
Great place, so beautiful designe , great food and good prices , nice people working there..wanna visit this place again
Food was very good. Sticky toffee pudding was delicious! Very noisy
We fell in love with this little hidden gem of a place; it feels authentically like a British pub, and the food is perfect. We went 3 times in 3 days, and our only regret is that we had to leave town before it opened again. Just wonderful.
Even though we went to celebrate a birthday, this is a place you could enjoy for any occasion. Great food and great service.
Just wonderful on every level. Great place!
Fun historical ambience and menu. A bit loud with music and close tables as are most NY restaurants. Portions were modest so you may want to order appetizers if you like a full, satisfying mea but prices are also modest. Food was good and everyone enjoyed their meal!
Just a wonderful atmosphere with spectacular food!
I love dining in their enclosed garden which provides a lovely ambiance in which to have a delicious meal with great service.
A lucky surprise, this little Pub is very charming, lots of young people at the bar during Happy Hour,
but the food is great, service is excellent, a fun place to have a light bite.
They used to have a really nice, quiet dining experience in their upstairs restaurant and I loved it. This time I went and was told that they only do events upstairs and that I had to go downstairs to eat. It was so loud I couldn't hear the people at my table or the server.
The server was also very rude, which was very different than previous experiences upstairs.
I used to love this place and recommend it, now I will not be going back and certainly do not recommend it.
Went to The Shakespeare after work with friends because it was recommended as a great place close to work. We really had a great experience. Food was very good and so was the service. We ended up ordering s bunch of appetizers and 2 bottles of wine. Loved everything we ate. The sliders and fries were my favorites! If you need a place to go in midtown, I highly recommend it. They have a big bar, and a patio. We will be back!
The food was ok. I wouldn't give it a 5 star. I ordered the fish and chips. I wish the fish was not as crispy. Unfortunately, I had my mind set on getting the calamari for starters but we were told there was a problem with the gas and so some items were not available on the menu. That kinda sucked.
Ruben was very helpful, along with our wonderful server.
Have had several good meals here. It’s really convenient because it is fairly close to Grand Central. They’ve recently closed the upstairs dining room which makes it a challenge to hear if there are a lot of people downstairs. I’ve had pretty good meals here but this last time I unwisely ordered the “Cobb Salad”. It was a smattering of iceberg lettuce leaves (even though I ordered the “large”), with a few small green olives (for some reason), a hard boiled egg, maybe a quarter of a slice of bacon broken up into tiny bits, a few pieces of avocado, and a slice or two of beefsteak tomato. In other words, NOT a Cobb Salad.
Highly recommended if you are looking for a lot of British pub ambiance and food/drink options. Impressed with the multitude of vegan options!
Pleasant and clever staff. Great food and beer. One of the very few places I’ve seen here with good English beer from a cask. Worth the visit just for that.
Had an excellent lunch. Great food, great beers, nice vibe. I'll definitely be going back.
Great fish and chips!!!
They are friendly and polite, and inferior is pretty. Their pie and draft beer lunch special is good price. I like the place a lot.
Highly recommend. We’ll be back soon!
Food and service were great. My companion and I both had the salmon and it was cooked perfectly. The sticky toffee pudding was also a definite highlight. Wonderful experience with authentic British decor.
