I love the Shakespeare. It was a recommendation from a friend, and we sat outside in September - it was like we weren't even in the city. This past time, we sat inside in a cozy room, and the food was delicious. The sticky toffee pudding was so incredible I'm still daydreaming about it. An all around amazing place!
Love the new upstairs menu! Great experience, per usual!
Fisherman's pie is lacking fish, while atmosphere is great for people watching. Good selection of ales and comfortable seating.
I met a friend for dinner and while waiting, had a drink at the bar. It was pretty noisy but everyone was having a good time. Dinner upstairs was very nice and quiet. Our waitress was great and the food was delicious.
Found this restaurant on trip advisor and decided to give it a try as it was within a few blocks where we were staying. Nice cheese board. My wife had salmon which was nicely cooked and had a tasty sauce. I had their burger and fries. A step above pub food. The wine was a basic pinot but pleasant. Nice ambiance as it felt very comfortable . Service was attentive and friendly. Will return again when back in nyc
Really nice and big place to have either diner appetizer, dinner or great cocktails! The staff is nice and nd efficient.
We sat on the patio and enjoyed a very good selection of farm fresh options from the price fixe for under $30!
Nice ambiance for a casual business lunch and great service!
The bland and bad food was served lukewarm. THe server was sweet and peppy.
Appetizer mushroom dish was bland tasteless. The boiled Brussels sprouts reminded me of the ones I hated as a kid, except these were really hard and tough to chew.
The portions are skimpy, which is fine because we didn’t finish half our tasteless meal.
Pork chop is the way to go. I personally call in advance to secure my portion as they sell out very quickly!
Great outdoor patio, great food and service.
We had the best experience! It was old friends reconnecting and we had a delicious meal with great wine and service. Nothing could have been better!! You should definitely check this place out - it is an amazing space and the food is out of this world!
My group had a very nice experience here. The service was warm and welcoming from the moment of arrival. We enjoyed a nice business discussion in an unhurried atmosphere with a nice ambience that is great for a variety of occasions. The food was also very good and well presented. I would definitely return. Thank you!
We had the snug by the bar and it was lovely for a work celebratory lunch.
I am so happy that in this area of midtown you can have an excellent burger in a space with NO TVs and no loud music. The chandelier in the dining room is lovely and it's fun to have a simple burger in a nice space. Thank you!!
Sunday roast was just what we wanted.
Roast beef and roast pork were delicious vegetables were perfectly done and dessert finished it off nicely!
The upstairs restaurant at The Shakespeare is a wonderful space with high ceilings and, fantastic service and even better food. The pork chop absolutely melted and the side of bubble and squeak was a perfect compliment, along with maybe the best mashed potato in the city.
Excellent Service and Waiter
Great cocktails, delicious food... Nice atmosphere and cute bartenders
Lovely room, excellent food, good service. Room can get noisy, but is generally a nice place in midtown for a good business lunch.
Casual yummy food. Great service Comfy atmosphere. Loved it
I have been to The Shakespeare a few times now and continue to think this is a hidden gem in a classic "old NY style"
My most recent visit was excellent.
Very attentive staff, the moment we walked in. The waiter was courteous as we were engaged in a business conversation, while also trying to keep water and wine glasses filled.
Food was excellent. Had the pork chop.
The wood lining the restaraunt is quintessntial NY, while I had gone this past summer and sat on the back porch which was perfect for outdoor dining.
Would highly recommend going as it is a great alternative to all the normal crowded places around Grand Central.
Fab Sunday roast, will defo go again when I am back in nyc
The ambience was nice (though if was a cold day and we were seated on an outside wall, so cold.
Service was good. Biggest disappointment was the the roast and gravy were room temperature.
Might try again in the future with lunch.
Disappointing English Sunday roast. On Sundays, The Shakespeare serves a traditional roast that claims to be ‘just like your mother used to make’. As a Brit, I was very excited to try it out but was disappointed with the quality of the food and service. Food was not very hot and vegetables had clearly been sitting somewhere warm for some time. Even though the restaurant was pretty quiet, the service was absent, and odd. I would not recommend this place for the food. However, the ambiance is great and they do have an excellent selection of traditional English cask beers.
We went last Sunday afternoon and the only thing on the menu was Sunday roast (roast beef, pork, veggie roast). I asked if the roast beef was rare and was told it was medium-rare. It was served well done and didn't have much taste. My husband had the pork roast and he thought it was tasteless. Considering that they are only doing the roast and some veggies (cauliflower, carrots, potatoes--all veggies perfectly cooked) and Yorkshire pudding (so-so). It should have been fabulous, and it wasn't. Everyone was very nice. Service was food. When I asked for horseradish sauce for the beef it came out homemade and plentiful. Maybe it was just a bad day, but it certainly didn't make me want to go back. If you are a beer lover, however, lots of choices!
The menu is exactly like it's uptown cousin, Jones-Wood Foundry. A lot of items were unavailable the night we visited, which pretty much limited us to burgers or salmon. (the burger was delicious, however).
The bar is great! Very casual.
Great meal, table very crammed for 3 people
Lovely setting in a historic building that once housed the Williams College alumni club. The Upstairs Downstairs dynamic is interesting. We chose downstairs and The Shakespeare’s atmosphere is authentic to a British pub experience , lots of wood, dark, moody and broken up into small rooms including one with a cosy fireplace. Attentive staff, happy to let us linger and Pub grub was on point! Bangers and mash, Shepherds Pie, Fish & Chips satisfied our dinner party. Special nod to the crispy triple fried chips, delicious. All washed down with pints of Fullers London Pride. Proximity to Grand Central Terminal makes it an easy meeting place too.
Appropriate yet filling portions. Good service. Nice atmosphere. Creative food.
I took my sister who was visiting the city to the Sunday roast. It was a comfortable and fun atmosphere and our waiter was great. The drink selection was good and the food was better. We split a meal and the waiter was nice about bringing additional kitchenware. Would recommend to anyone!
This is a super Sunday roast. We were in NYC from London for the weekend and this was a must have for us on a Sunday. Excellent Old Speckled Hen Ale on draft also, three were quaffed in short order by me. If we lived in NYC we would be here every Sunday :-) excellent service from our waiter also, very nice chap.
Met a friend here - waiter so helpful. Delicious food and room festively decorated. We dined pre-theatre and had no problem getting to the play. Thank you for a lovely meal.
Excellent service and very good british pub fare. Interesting space with several rooms to explore.
Excellent meal. Will return
Very attractive setting (dining room). Excellent service. Nicely made martini and attentive service. We had very good fish dishes plus a tasty version of shepherd's pie. Perhaps small size of dining room made it noisier than expected. There was a large table of enthusiastic talkers nearby. Worth another visit.
The Shakespeare is a great place to go if you want a quiet, homey atmosphere to have a conversation. I find most restaurants too noisy. The menu is not huge but there is a good selection to choose from.
Excellent food and ambiance for our Thanksgiving dinner. We left full, with plenty of leftovers.
Nice selection of British food, really enjoyed it and the cask ale menu.
Great place to have lunch with friends and be able to hear each other. Love the decor!
