About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Romantic
  • Good for business meals
The Shakespeare offers well-kept beers and cask ales and friendly service in a casual no-frills environment. Serving a more sophisticated ‘pub grub’ repertoire coupled with a setting reminiscent of a 14th century tavern, the pub is the perfect place to have a pint and grab a bite to eat. We also have two elegant rooms located above the pub, The Peacock Room is modeled after a 19th Century gentleman’s club complete with an elegant fireplace. The Garden Room is decorated beautifully with artwork by Bradley Wood and a stunning Waterford Crystal Chandelier. We are as well fortunate to have Raines Law Room located in the same building at The William where guests can enjoy craft cocktails with a small bite and dessert menu.

This was my first and last visit to the restaurant. My lady friend and I went to see the Downton Abbey movie and she wanted English cuisine for dinner. I made reservations at the Shakespeare. When we got there the restaurant was in the basement of The William. The dinning area was far from "pubish" and more like "dumpish." I had a Shepard pie which was essentially a bowl of mash potatoes with a slight hint of lamb in the base. Yuck. My lady seemed to enjoy her food; she had Scottish eggs for an appraiser and bangers and mash (sausage and mash potatoes) for entree. My bottom line is that I was disappointed and my lady was not. Keep in mind English cuisine is not very well known and I can see why.

Cask ales on top were all local and non imported. The website says very differently as I was hoping for UK ones. Drinks were slow to come out. Shepherds pie was small and not enough lamb in it. Tasted fine. Just a little disappointed with the casks on offer and the size of the dish.

Good food, attentive staff and reasonable prices for New York city and this area. Air conditioning was too cold for us. The staff turned it down when we asked but it went back up not long after. We had asked for the patio but was told it wasn't available so that was a disappointment. Would have liked to know ahead of time when booked with OpenTable as we might have made a different choice.

It was too cold with the air conditioning very high, and it was very noisy. But the food is very good and they Accommodated adding a third person and graciously moved our table.

Lovely place with great service and very good food. The seat cushion covers in the garden are need cleaning desperately, but that's my only suggestion. Will def. go back.

I'll definitely return, hopefully when it's quieter. It was not the restaurant's fault -- there was a large, loud, rowdy party, but our waitress was sympathetic and accommodating. I had the special, a brook trout which the waitress described as "summer on a plate," and it was indeed delicious. Looking forward to trying the regular menu on my next visit.

There are several dining spaces at The Shakespeare. During my most recent visit, I was in the bar area with a friend, which was a little louder than I like. (I'd rather not have to shout across the table to have a conversation.) The other areas are generally quieter. The food and service are very good. I highly recommend the restaurant.

Good pub fare in a tavern-like setting. Food was good, but a bit pricey for lunch. Service was friendly. On a nice summer day, the ambience is a bit dark as you’re below sidewalk level, but could imagine it would be a cozy spot in Autumn and Winter. The restaurant is connected to the William Hotel, which may be why prices are inflated above expectation.
