The Russian House Ratings and Reviews
A genuine atmosphere! The servers were attentive and friendly. And the food was quite tasty. We tried a lot of things that we'd not had before: herring, tongue, boar, caviar. All of it was beyond expectation. Such a fun, funky place appropriately in the heart of Austin.
This is a great little restaurant with good ambiance and a pleasant staff. This was our second time eating there. The appetizers (Blini and Herring with Potatoes) were very good. However they were out of the Golubitsky and I opted for the Lula Kebab which was a little overcooked. My wife had the Ukrainian Borsch which was very good.
I have enjoyed holiday dinners here for several years but not this year. Four items we ordered we were told they were out of...the excuse...it was a busy nite. They are a reservation based restaurant; they know in advance their numbers. How do you run out of vegetables, mainstay appetizers, baked apples, etc., poor planning is my guess. Service was slow, some hot food arrived cold...by the time we ordered coffee, they had only 3 clean cups, we were a party of 5; 2 hot coffees were brought in glasses without holders...not up to their usual standards. We were very disappointed.
I was hoping for more of a brunch menu, being Christmas morning; but alas no. It did give me a chance to try elk pelmini (dumplings), which were much better than I expected. Russian House is a must for more adventurous diners looking to try unfamiliar and exotic foods.
The wait staff is always charmingly friendly, and the manager on duty always stops by my table to ask if everything is up to standard. The food is excellent, and an excellent place to try new, possibly unfamiliar foods. While the tables are somewhat close together, your neighbors don't intrude on your dining experience -- and it's interesting to see what other people select from the menu.
Last Saturday we had a group of ten friends going to a local concert and needed a great place to eat. I suggested Russian House since my wife and I had visited before and had a great time there. The service was perfect and the food was awesome! I look forward tot the next time I can introduce another friend to Russian House!
We've been to Russian House several times, and every time it's amazing! This time we went because they were offering bear on their menu for a limited time. Bear! We ordered the "full bear menu" which included, a soup, some dumpling type dish, and a full dinner dish with a cut, an infused vodka shot, and a dessert! Everything tasted great, and the staff is always amazing! The chef even came out to ask how the meal was. Definitely worth every cent, and the drive/walk being that it's in downtown Austin. We will return.
The Russian house is great! Very ethnic and delicious dishes. The soup is high priced, small portioned but worth it! Everything we had was delicious. They give you complimentary shots of vodka when you dine in. I can recommend the chicken dishes, blinis, soups, and dumplings.
The atmosphere is like being in an old Sovuet apartment. I went with my fiancé who was born in the Soviet Union, so I know this. Ethnic decor, the staff speak fluent English and Russian and the drinks are awesome and reasonably priced. Try Chef Vladimir's special drinks, over 25 spices and herbs in each one, totally awesome and unique.
Free parking in this area is scant. The only downfall, if you are driving, is the $10 an hour lot next to the restaurant. If you're contemplating, just do it, you won't regret it! The food is great! We are definitely returning.
This place used to be 5 star and very authentic. End of 2017 and it’s gone down hill. Not sure if they changed chefs, but they definitely changed recipes and for the worse. Many of the Russian standard Zakuski are now Americanized. They are skimping on caviar and at the same time the prices seem to have gone up just slightly.
5 years ago when it opened it was an awesome place with super authentic food and a huge selection of flavored vodka nastoika. Now, it seems to be more of a Russian light. Hopefully Austin gets some competition in the Russian food department because regardless of what culture you grew up with, Real Russian food is awesome!
A really fun night.
A picture of Lenin.
A large stuffed bear.
Waitresses in semi-period Russian peasant garb who act like they are having a great time working there.
A welcoming amouse-bouche of housemade sauerkraut served with a shot of vodka.
The best Latvian sparkling wine ever. And maybe the only one too.
An enormous vodka list.
What's not to like?
We'll be back.
Really excellent food with nice portion sizes. My servers accent was a little hard to understand, but we did OK and she was excellent ( my first time). The menu is pretty extensive and she let me take my time ordering. I took some food carry out and it could have been packaged better - standard styrofoam containers and one leaked all over. However the food was still excellent reheated. Will definitely dine here again when I come back to Austin
very pleasant experience. Our 3rd time and we keep going back because the staff is exceptionally friendly, the food is interesting and very good.
We had Salmon roe , followed by a shared rice/lamb dish and ended with a shared cake. We had 3 small glasses of vodka with the meal and we didi not miss the wine. we drank some water as well.... :) The bill was moderate so we shall be back
The ambience was very unique and cool. The waitresses were dressed in what seemed like Russian attire. They gave complimentary vodka shots with some bread and veggies, which was a nice touch. My husband ordered the cabbages which he enjoyed. I ordered the Georgian chicken and was disappointed. My dish literally had 3 small pieces of chicken. For $17, it was disappointing. I would expect a breast of chicken at least for that price. We also ordered crepes which had meat inside, and came with a side of sour cream. Husband enjoyed the crepes. While I was highly disappointed with my chicken dish, we would give it another try and try something else, in hopes that other dishes are a little better.
