For over 100 years, The Algonquin Hotel has served the world’s most prolific writers and celebrities of the stage and screen. This yearit celebrates the original gathering of New York’s famous wits, authors and critics who in June 1919 organized a first lunch together at the hotel, for what would become known as The Round Table. Their daily lunches lasted for 10 years. The tone they set during these daily meetings set the literary style of the 1920s.

While society columns of the time referred to them as The Algonquin Round Table, they called themselves The Vicious Circle. Most notable members were Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley, Alexander Woollcott and Harold Ross, who founded The New Yorker here.

The food isn’t bad and the service is fine but the price is ridiculous. It goes way beyond regularly high hotel prices for food. There is nothing particularly special about the cuisine and even the presentation is lacking. I paid $19 for hummus with pita. $8 for a cup of (stale) coffee. See my picture of the $25 continental breakfast that consisted of a mini muffin, croissant, pastry and little container of fruit. For the same price you can go to an upscale restaurant in NYC and get better food and nicer presentation.

Shabby chic describes the Algonquin's Round Table restaurant, which is really part of the hotel lobby. Table cloths and couches that weren't too low for the tables would have enhanced the ambiance. The staff was attentive and the food was good.

Beautiful old hotel with lots of charm.
Breakfast was OK...eggs Benedict weren’t hot nor were the toasted bagels. Fruit was very fresh.
Servers are very friendly

The thrill is gone. It was a Saturday night, pre-Show dinner for 4 of us. 6pm reservation. Place is 90% empty. We are seated promptly at one of the only 2 4-person tables, which are.both near the kitchen. Glasses get filled quickly. Bar order taken quickly too. We order our meals by 6:15-6:20. Then the staff diaappears. No bread. No drink refills. No food. And nobody to complain to. At 7:20 our food arrives, which we all wolf down, skip dessert so we can make the 8pm curtain. Besides us, the place never got busier than 4 or 5 tables of 2, so this was not a case of an overloaded staff or kitchen. This was just simply poor, slow service. No one came to ask how our food was, or to say while we waited, "We're sorry for the delay but...." just ... neglect.

I'd say the food was good. Not great, but by that point, being stressed to make a curtain, it could have been ambrosia from heaven and we wouldn't have enjoyed it to what it might have deserved.

Main issue was a man who wandered in and sat at a table near us not to eat but rather to talk loudly on his cellphone. Then he wandered through the restaurant talking and ultimately came back to the table near us, yes , still talking loudly.

Worst service imaginable!

Hostess could not be bothered with seating guests. Once seated 30 minutes until order was taken. Another 45 for food! This was at 1130 am!!

When asked what was going on she was nasty in responding back. Could not be bothered. In the wrong line it business.

Asked to speak to manager. She walked away and did not get manager.

Asked front desk for food manager. Once we discussed he didnt seem to care either!

Food was mediocre at best.

Do not recommend this place at all!

Next door is a little diner!

Elegant old new York! Dine in an nicely decorated lobby with large mirrors, oak paneling, and pockets of privacy. Food is pretty good but you're going for old world glamour.

There was some issue where they had NO Entrees - and while it apparently was known all day, no one told us before we got there. The service staff was in a bad mood, which impacted what should have been a festive occasion . I had to ask for the check 3 times and it took almost 30 minutes to get it.

This is the second time that I have been to The Algonquin Hotel for brunch. It's definitely the last. While the ambience and service make it potentially worth the trip, there is no value at all as far as the cost. Breakfast entrees hover in the mid-twenties, and a cup of coffee is $8.00. So my wife and I had one cup of coffee each, and that added $16.00 to the tab. And I thought Starbucks was bad. The food itself was good but certainly nothing to gush over. I never mind paying for a nice dinner in a lovely setting. But there is a big difference between assuming that kind of cost and price gouging. Brunch at the Algonquin is gouging.

The service was lovely. But, the food felt a little over-priced for what it was. The restaurant is described as being more upscale than I found it to be--perhaps in times past. I did appreciate the relaxed pace of our meal and that the space was very suitable for children.

Good menu and wine selections. Occasional confusion among waiters as to who was looking after my table but all very pleasant about addressing my requests. Excellent entree (short ribs and root vegetables in a rich sauce). Club-like dining room (the `salon' for some now-famous writers in the 1920's in NYC). Very pleasant pre-theater experience.

I have never given a 1 Star rating before but I guess there is a first for everything.

From the moment we walked in to the moment we got from our table it was miserable.

It was a Saturday evening and we came in to have some drinks, it was busy as expected and we were willing to wait. The extremely rude and pompous staff made you feel as if they were doing us a favor for being there. When we finally were called for the hostess stand next door to the main bar she was extremely rude and mouthy.

We were sat at our table in the room next to the main bar and were not greeted or waited on for 15 minutes so we got up and left.

We had been looking forward to drinking and dining at this iconic bar so what a let down this was.

We went down to the bar at the Sofitel hotel and had great service without all the pomp and circumstance.

We were excited to have a Saturday lunch here at the esteemed Algonquin Hotel despite the sad online reviews we read. There was indeed an "aloof country club atmosphere" when we arrived. The front desk staff checking people in and out of the hotel were very nice. We stood waiting to be seated for an inordinate amount of time even though the place wasn't busy. Once seated we were never given water and had to wave someone over to take our order. During that time a young couple were seated and were not taken care of and they left in a sort of huff, mumbling and grumbling as they went on their way. The food, once it arrived, was hot, fresh and delicious. Worth the wait? Perhaps... We arrived well before our reservation and barely got out in time so we could travel uptown. Two hours later. Also, the music playing was a bit too modern for the space. Some period-specific tunes would've added tot he ambience.

Very disappointed in this restaurant. We’d been before and it was great. They no longer have a pre-theater dinner menu and we found that the entrees were a bit on the heavy side.

Sunday night reservation. Quite empty and quiet. I was expecting a lively place having eaten here many years ago. No longer. We should have eaten in the adjacent bar - it was much more intimate and inviting.

Service was just transactional. Guy walks up to the table and says, “Are you ready to order?” No pleasantries, no discussion of the menu or history of the restaurant- which is a big part of its allure. Food was good.

Worst experience I’ve had in a restaurant in years. Hotel called the day before (after taking my reservation a week prior) and said restaurant would be closed for a private event and I was instructed to eat in lounge. Ok, so I didn’t have time to choose another place, so I went to lounge. The waiter takes a drink order, brings our drinks, and we never saw him or anyone else again. After about an hour, we asked for help and was told our waiter just walked out of the building - no apology, nothing. I asked for bill - bill game and of course it was wrong amount - moved decimal point and it was way off. I was so frustrated I just paid the amount and left. Awful, awful, experience- complete waste of time. Will not ever set foot in this place again. Algonquin has lost its way.

Skip the $30 breakfast on cold and burnt flavour coffee, luke warm eggs and soggy toast. Wasted time and effort. This is a pass among other better options in NYC.
