The Rotunda at Neiman Marcus - San Francisco Ratings and Reviews
This was my first experience at the Rotunda. The service was good, the cocktails delicious, but the food was very underwhelming. Portions were less than and the creativity of menu items was less than I expected from friends who recommended. I would come for a cocktail but eat elsewhere.
- Appreciate the increased options, and vegetarian choices on the menu
- The lobster club is no longer what I used to remember it to be. It's been downgraded in quality and presentation with higher price due to "mass production": bring back taro chips please, as opposed to mundane potato chips!
I was pretty disappointed in the low value at high cost of The Rotunda afternoon tea service. The sandwiches were poor quality and tasted like they sat in a fridge all day. The service was sub-par. At one point they either switched servers or our server forgot about us entirely. Not worth the money. Would rather go to the Palace Hotel, The Sip Room or Tal-y Tara.
Celebrated our wedding reception at The Rotunda. The special requested arrangements were completed perfectly and the serve stafff made the lunch enjoyable and welcoming. The food was delicious and orchestrated with ease. Even though the room was full, we never felt rushed or ignored. My expectations for a wonderful experience were met at The Rotunda.
Group of 5 friends had afternoon tea on a Sunday. The table setting was nice as was the Rotunda in general. We chose different teas and were all quite satisfied with our choices. The sandwiches and treats were just okay. It's a fun experience but the food alone would not be worth the cost. Our service was not to the standards that we expected. Our server started out very attentive, but by the end of our meal, seemed either agitated or overworked. The water servers also had to be called to our table and we sat waiting for a good 15-20 min before he returned. To sum it up, go for the experience and know that's what you're paying for. The food and service on their own would not be worth the cost.
After coming here since I was a little girl service has slipped to an all time low. Everything took forever from water till my daughter’s birthday cupcake that arrived after dessert. If it wasn’t for the gentlemen delivering popovers and consume and the overworked server in the neighboring section, Im not sure we ever would have received our tea service. Sadly, this was all beyond disappointing.
I've always loved the iconic Rotunda for its ambiance, and well, also for its iconic popovers. The last visit was as enjoyable as every other visit, but I'll be honest in saying that this time the food was a bit lacking. The popovers were overdone, the breads on the chicken salad and cucumber sandwiches were dry, the desserts were pedestrian and everything was just rather bland. The egg salad and crab salad sandwiches were nice, but other than these two items no one at our table found anything to be stellar. Ar $45 per person we expect the food to at least be above average. The tea was delicious and the service was top-flight. Everything was great with the exception of the food.
My daughter and I have a tradition of going to the Rotunda at Neiman Marcus in SF for special occasions. She loves the popovers ( and food) , and we both love the ambience and being treated royally.
Our server, Charlie, made the experience this time outstanding.
He was so well versed in the preparation and ingredients of the menu.
When we received our meals, he answered our questions, about some of the items on the plate that were creatively presented. The food was delicious, of course.
We will continue to have more special occasion meals at the Rotunda.
Hopefully, Charlie, will be our server!
It's with sadness that I write this review. Dining at the Rotunda for the holidays, whether it be Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve has always been a treat to look forward to, as we did for our visit this time. We'd booked in November for 12/31, and we were seated in the window on the far right side. One thing immediately noticeable was all the dust on the white wall behind us and the flooring edge outside the glass partition. It was distracting. We received our consommé, lovely as always, the popovers nice as always with the strawberry butter, thankfully this time not tasting of the refrigerator as it has on some past visits, our cocktails, a lovely smoky bourbon drink and a lemonade, and then our main salads. Both salads were a mound of torn lettuce, mine was to have had frisee , there was none, and minimal toppings. The oil poached salmon had been shredded as if it were pulled pork, and there was a minimal sprinkling across the greens, underdone bland potatoes, and an okay dressing. I had envisioned this dish with a filet of salmon on top, at best I may have gotten two ounces of shredded salmon. The Crab Louie didn't fend much better, the crab itself was very tasty as was the dressing, there were only three shrimp, and again, a pile of torn greens, a lot of money to pay for a plate of greens. We almost skipped dessert because nothing sounded that good, luckily our server mentioned a special warm ginger cake with caramel and vanilla ice cream, we ordered it, and it was very nice. Given this experience, perhaps there has been a change in the chef etc, we're not sure if we'll return again.
My reservation was for Afternoon Tea which was just okay. I’ve had a much more flavorful and creative assortment at other places that offer Afternoon Tea. The sandwiches were too cold for my liking. Certain foods need to be closer to room temperature for the flavors to come through. The scones, while tasty, were also cold. The biggest disappointment was the dessert layer. All the items had the same flavors and colors, brown. No items made with fruit, no chocolates. I did really enjoy the tea, fresh warm popovers, the champagne and the complimentary cupcake for our birthday guest. I’ve had lunch at The Rotunda and I enjoyed the lunch menu a lot more. I would return, but probably for lunch only.
We had an early New Year's celebration with one of my BFF's and her lovely Mom. We were seated right in front of the middle of the bay window. Our servers were attentive but not intrusive. I had the lobster club sandwich and my dining companions had the burgers. Just wonderful! The popovers were a hit too!
View is superb. Definitely make a reservation in advance for window seating. Service was sub par for the area, and even more so for the swankiness of the restaurant. There were two unmistakable hairs in my boyfriends soup - which was subsequently removed from our bill. Overall, I would recommend if you’re visiting the SF area; just check your entrees.
