The Root Restaurant & Bar is a locally owned and operated business that showcases the seasonality of food and beverage in Michigan and its surrounding areas. The comfortable yet refined dining room and bar, accented with stained ash wood and limestone, feature an open kitchen and a chef's counter where the customers can sit and watch their food being made. Chef James Rigato's menu changes often and has a variety of options including a local grass-fed beef burger, house-made desserts, fresh seafood and in-house smoked meats. The Root Bar has 8 Microbrews on draft and a full selection of wines, bottled beer, alcohol and house cocktails incorporating a number of Michigan breweries, distilleries and winemakers. The Root prides itself on offering casual dining with a higher standard of food, beverage and service.

The tables for 2 a little too close ! The food delicious. We were given a little bit of champagne to celebrate our anniversary and that was a great gesture. Thank you !

I have eaten at The Root many times since it opened and always had a good meal, great service and good value, butI will not eat at The Root again anytime soon. When we first walked in, the hostess wanted to seat us immediately, even though we were early and the rest of our party hadn't arrived yet; She was annoyed when we wanted to have a drink and wait for them. Our server was pleasant, but did not appear that knowledgable on the dishes. In the past, I have always been impressed with the staff's knowledge and ability to accommodate special requests. We ordered the brussel sprouts appetizer, without bleu cheese, since 3 out of four have a dairy allergy; it came with bleu cheese on it, so we sent it back, My husband ordered the fish special, which was ahi tuna on soba noodles. He requested to substitute the noodles for rice, and was told not they couldn't do that and the server didn't offer any other option. He requested to speak with the manager, who came over and advised the same without offering any other option, other than to say that they only had a certain portion of rice and couldn't substitute. I can understand the portioning issue, but come on, it was white rice!!! My husband then asked for a vegetable and she said no, same thing on the portion side, so he finally said how about a salad? The manager agreed, and brought out a dish of plain arugula with about 2 radishes on it, which was pretty pathetic. All the main dishes then came out, and I have to say that compared to meals we have had there in the past, the portion sizes were tiny. I would call them appetizer size, not main entree size, especially for the prices they were charging.
All in all, we were very disappointed in the whole dining experience; I had heard that the original chef/owner was no longer involved in the restaurant and there was a new chef. I always considered The Root a higher end restaurant but they'll have to improve their service and selections if they want my business anymore!

We were there for a birthday, which came with a complimentary dessert for the birthday person. Service was great, as usual, including accommodation of my multitude of food allergies. Some new things on the menu (cocktails and food) along with the different daily specials. One of the more interesting cocktails was a hickory-smoke/maple/bourbon/cherry John Collins. Great wine by the glass selection at reasonable prices and variety.

Our usuals for brunch didn't disappoint. The Chicken and Waffles are to die for. Chicken is tender an juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside! The bacon is the best I've had but you have to like salty. Happy Customers!

Wow! This restaurant has it all! We loved the decor, the menu selection, friendly wait staff, and especially the food! Everything we ordered was nothing short of amazing and we were impressed by the creative presentation. Equally impressive are the reasonable prices. For a unique, fun, and welcoming dining experience, visit The Root. We will certainly be back! We only wish that the restaurant was located closer to home; however, it was well worth the drive.

This restaurant is one of our favorite ‘special occasions’ locations. We especially enjoy sitting at the Chefs Table and try to book it when we can. Excellent food that features Michigan grown/raised products.

It was an okay restaurant food was good but not great but still good. Beautiful place to dine but prices are pretty high for what you get. Not vegan friendly. I would suggest more menu options in general. I would go back though if it were special occassion and I'm willing to spend 30 or more bucks on things I actually want.

It was our first visit to The Root and everyone that attended was disappointed. It started out with the waiter spilling a glass of water on the table. We know that accidents happen but when the water went into our appetizer and we were not offered a replacement - that was our first disappointment. Our waiter seemed to disappear quite often - we had to wait 15 minutes for our drinks and then while having dessert we had to wait about another 15 minutes before we flagged down another waitperson to assist in bringing us our beverage. The food was only average but had the service been better, we may have enjoyed the evening and food more.
