The Root Restaurant & Bar Ratings and Reviews
Overall Great experience. We arrived a little early prior to our reservation and while waiting had a drink at the bar. The bartender made good drinks, but she seemed a little short with us when the bar was mostly empty, which I didn't understand. Our server once seated was great, so overall a good experience.
The atmosphere at The Root is great, especially given that it resides in a strip mall. The service was top notch and the food was very good. However, $25 for fried chicken seems to be a bit pricey as was the paparadelle with bolognese. I had the pork belly which was wonderful with the homemade kimchi and creamed corn. It was an appetizer and $14, but really was the best value as it was as large as the 2 entrees my son and wife ordered.
The food is very good. The lobster bisque brith has a great flavor. Scallops were cooked perfectly. Buttermilk chicken crispy on the outside and tender/juicy on the inside. Warm beet salad was delicious as was the Brie puff pastry! Great indulgence to celebrate New Year’s Eve
The restaurant was noisy not cozy or intimate. The service was ok. The meal was at best average. Poor presentation or playing, potatoes on the cold side. The greens (Kale) was very tough. Dessert was complimentary since it was our anniversary. This is always a nice touch. There is too much competition around for restaurants for this to be an average destination.
I always LOVE the Root Restaurant, although I NEVER get the steaks. This trip I ordered the pork chop with spaetzle (which was magnificent), and at 6:30pm they only had the one pork chop left, so my husband and our friends all ordered steaks instead. All 3 of them complained that their rib eyes and strip steaks, while tasty, were so gristly they were unenjoyable. My husband has complained about this before, but thought maybe it was a fluke. Moral of the story: don't order the steaks!
We both had the tasting menu, one with the wine pairing and the other with the beer pairing!! All the food was imaginative and tasty. Choices were allowed with each course so the seafood eater and the seafood hater were both happy. The pumpkin cheesecake with blueberry compote was an interesting pairing and was delicious the next day when we could have room to eat it! Server was knowledgeable and non-smothering.
Always worth the trip. Menu always changes, but always great!
This was a disappointing experience. Knowing the Root had been Michigan's restaurant or the year in the past we expected much more. My partner has a chicken dish which was bland and I , having had a late lunch followed the recommendation of a couple at the next table to have a fried bologna sandwich. Dumb, I know, but I was not that hungry and found nothing tempting on the menu. Definitely not worth a 25 minute drive.
We want to like the Root - the menu looks amazing to us...amazing! However, the past two times we’ve dined there - our meals were way too salty. Also, my mushroom entree was served at room temperature- disappointing. Bartender was great...the younger server seemed inexperienced...
We had the tasting menu with a wine pairing. This was our third time having the tasting menu. I seem to remember the tasting menu being inventive and different than the regular menu, but now it is just allowing you to pick different items off the menu in 5 course fashion. Was more impressed with the creativity before but the food is still high level. Everything is always perfectly cooked. The seasonal flair is always fun and delicious.
