The Root Restaurant & Bar is a locally owned and operated business that showcases the seasonality of food and beverage in Michigan and its surrounding areas. The comfortable yet refined dining room and bar, accented with stained ash wood and limestone, feature an open kitchen and a chef's counter where the customers can sit and watch their food being made. Chef James Rigato's menu changes often and has a variety of options including a local grass-fed beef burger, house-made desserts, fresh seafood and in-house smoked meats. The Root Bar has 8 Microbrews on draft and a full selection of wines, bottled beer, alcohol and house cocktails incorporating a number of Michigan breweries, distilleries and winemakers. We both had the tasting menu, one with the wine pairing and the other with the beer pairing!! All the food was imaginative and tasty. Choices were allowed with each course so the seafood eater and the seafood hater were both happy. The pumpkin cheesecake with blueberry compote was an interesting pairing and was delicious the next day when we could have room to eat it! Server was knowledgeable and non-smothering.

This was a disappointing experience. Knowing the Root had been Michigan's restaurant or the year in the past we expected much more. My partner has a chicken dish which was bland and I , having had a late lunch followed the recommendation of a couple at the next table to have a fried bologna sandwich. Dumb, I know, but I was not that hungry and found nothing tempting on the menu. Definitely not worth a 25 minute drive.
We want to like the Root - the menu looks amazing to us...amazing! However, the past two times we’ve dined there - our meals were way too salty. Also, my mushroom entree was served at room temperature- disappointing. Bartender was great...the younger server seemed inexperienced...
We had the tasting menu with a wine pairing. This was our third time having the tasting menu. I seem to remember the tasting menu being inventive and different than the regular menu, but now it is just allowing you to pick different items off the menu in 5 course fashion. Was more impressed with the creativity before but the food is still high level. Everything is always perfectly cooked. The seasonal flair is always fun and delicious.
I had not been to Root in a while, primarily because we held my daughters graduation dinner there, and it was terrible. Even worse, it was my recommendation for that dinner because of all of the positive experiences I had had in the past (that, and my daughter is a foodie who had high expectations).
I am very glad I went back. Everything was great, including the special rabbit stew. My thai chili shrimp tacos were also extremely flavorful. I plan on returning!
Waitress, Karen, was quite helpful. Appetizer of wings was great. Entree of steak was tasty, but the insomnia I suffered from after led me to believe that what I assumed was a reduction must have had either coffee or chocolate. If so, I wish I had been informed.
I had the tasting menu, seemed the chef was not watching the proteins and broiled cauliflower, there was a prominent burnt flavor. The staff did let me order something else for the cauliflower. The highlight was the banana cream pie. This is my 3rd visit, I’ve had better food in the past.
The Root always has delicious seasonal items on their menu. This evening they have a duck leg that was delicious. We were fortunate that they had one slice of their wonderful apple pie left. It’s amazing. The food is good from the appetizers to their entrees to their desserts. The craft cocktails are all made from fresh and local ingredients and we can count on them to havenintwetimg Michigan beers on tap. This night they had one of my favorites - Keweenaw Brewings Pick Axe Blonde.
I have dined here before and went back for our anniversary dinner. We started with a charcuterie board and it was pretty good. I would like to see some type of preserves instead of the honeycomb for something new. A while back they served a lavender infused preserve with the cheese and it was Delicious with a hint of the lavender. Would love to see that come back!
Our dinner was disappointing. I ordered the New York Strip because last time I ate there it was sooooo tender and it melted in my mouth. This time it was tough and overcooked. It was even hard to cut with the steak knife. The greens on the side were cooked perfectly with a little crunch and good flavor. The potatoes were hot and tasty. We were also disappointed that the meatloaf was no longer on the menu. My husband ordered the spaghetti and meatballs and said it was good. Nothing spectacular.
The server was great except he forgot to give us our water at the beginning. Also, they used to serve a delicious warm bread but we never got any delivered to our table. Does that have to be ordered specifically now? He did explain the beer flight in detail and the Hubbie enjoyed most of the beers. There was an interesting Moscow Muele beer that I would try again.
They gave us a complimentary dessert because of our anniversary which was great. However they were out of the Tiramisu which I wanted to order. None of their other selections really sounded good. Maybe add a dessert with seasonal apples?
The noise level is low and it's very romantic and nice ambiance. I will definitely go back with their creative menu. However, I don't know if I would order the New York Strip again.
This used to be one of our favorite restaurants. We gave it one last shot tonight. The menu is confusing and mostly uninspiring, the food here used to be eclectic and fabulous. I've had friendlier service at an Applebee's. Not sure what happened here but I miss the place this 'used' to be. We won't be back.
I gave the restaurant a lower score for dinner because: The bread was average. The scallops were undercooked to my preference and a bit cold. Dinner took a long time to arrive.
Soups, salad and spaghetti/meatballs were good. Service was excellent, drink menu was well curated. I would go back. I would like to see a bit better focus on the meal execution, though. I’ve had brunch and lunch there before and was delighted. I enjoy the locally sourced, more natural/organic and grass fed (whole food) focus. Menu content is great and imaginative.
Dishes were good, but not warm/hot enough. French Onion Soup was warm enough to eat right away whereas normally it needs to cool down a bit. My Chicken Pot Pie Soup was also just warm. My $10 squash toast was cold! Food is good and the dishes unique, but overpriced for what you get. Service was excellent!
We have always enjoyed dining at Root, with it's unique dishes and focus on organic farm-to-table ingredients. But since becoming vegans in the last two years, my husband and I are very thankful this chef has offered an excellent vegan tasting menu. It is almost impossible to enjoy any fine dining with vegan options. Thank you and please don't ever eliminate this choice!
Excellent service. Food was really good, especially the crab cakes and the pork chop. I thought prices were very reasonable considering the quality of the food....we spent about $160 on dinner for four with an expensive bottle of wine. Will definitely go back
Service was fantastic; the waitress remembered our party of 4 from a year ago. The chef always accommodates my many food allergies and I get an excellent meal. Lots of different beers and many wines to choose from, along with signature hand-crafted cocktails, and after dinner drinks. Lots of specials that change frequently and are very creative. The waitress had tried a lot of the food, so she was able to offer advice about what to get and what to pair it with. I’ve never had a bad evening at The Root — it’s always great.
Alot of the menu options are locally sourced. Waiter was very good. We ordered the thai shrimp tacos which were excellent and the evening special of korean style short ribs. The short ribs were not as described. They were very large and long pieces of meat. They were very so-so. Dessert of banana cream pie was a real disappointment; thick heavy filling.
